NFL Cheerleaders Shave Their Heads on National TV to Support Leukemia Research

Who says bald isn't beautiful? Don't tell that to Megan M. and Crystal B., two Indianapolis Colts cheerleaders who agreed to have their heads shaved to benefit leukemia research during the Colts' 20-13 Sunday win over the Buffalo Bills at Indy's Lucas Oil Field. Of course, the fight to cure leukemia has been a major focus of this franchise since head coach Chuck Pagano was diagnosed with the disease in September.

Earlier this month, over two dozen Colts players shaved their heads in a show of support for Pagano, who is undergoing chemotherapy to battle a condition that is in remission, according to recent reports.

The cheerleaders got in the game when Blue, the team's overstuffed blue horse of a mascot, issued a challenge -- if one Colts cheerleader could raise $10,000 for leukemia research by November 25, she'd get her head shaved. That's only a good deal if you're a great person trying to help someone you care about, and that's clearly the case here -- Megan and Crystal raised over $22,000 on time, and sat down for the buzz cuts. Blue began the festivities before somebody more qualified took over.

"I've just had personal experiences with people who have had cancer," Megan told 24-hour News 8's Daniel Miller. "I've had mentors and family members and volunteer at Riley and met little girls who have lost their hair and beat cancer multiple times. Just seeing struggles they went through and how they could overcome that and still have confidence and fight this fight without their hair - they are really my inspiration for doing this."

Megan and Crystal aren't alone. Local salons are donating $10 to "Blue's ChuckStrong Challenge" for every person who agrees to have their heads shaved. 800 fans have had their heads shaved so far, and more than $250,000 has been raised for leukemia research by Colts representatives since the "ChuckStrong" campaign began.

If you would like to know more about the campaign, visit the "ChuckStrong" section of the Colts' official website.

The Colts' organization is filled with high-quality people, but what makes this the feel-good story of the year is that one season after finishing with the a 2-14 record and blowing up the organization in the offseason, this team has a 7-4 record and is in the thick of the AFC playoff race with interim head coach Bruce Arians.

choco_carebear 25th-Nov-2012 11:24 pm (UTC)
Sweet :)
pinkimartini 25th-Nov-2012 11:25 pm (UTC)
Aww...this is really wonderful.
vonlisbon 25th-Nov-2012 11:26 pm (UTC)
Hah I bet a lot of the women who would rarely consider this sober would also secretly kind of enjoy the freedom of being nearly-bald for a while. It's a literal clean slate, at least for your head.

I lovelovelove my long hair but some days...
vampireweekend 25th-Nov-2012 11:27 pm (UTC)
i consider doing it all the time but i don't have enough confidence or the right facial structure to rock it
autophanous 25th-Nov-2012 11:30 pm (UTC)
I would kill to do it, but I don't know how well my job would take it.
burning_disco 25th-Nov-2012 11:35 pm (UTC)
I would love to do this. I've been dying my hair since 1997 and would love to start over with my natural color.

plus i have a lot of wigs.

If it wasn't for my scalp psoriasis I'd probably do it.
thebootyfaerie 26th-Nov-2012 01:34 am (UTC)
I have dermatitis on my scalp (not the same thing, I know), and having a pixie cut is super helpful for keeping the scalp healthy. I almost never have issues when I have short hair.

It's long now... and I have to dye it, because for some reason that also clears the dermatitis right up. No idea why. It usually starts to show up around the 4-6 week mark, which is when I need to do a touch-up anyway.
breaktheice89 25th-Nov-2012 11:38 pm (UTC)
I would love to do it once, just so my hair could grow back really healthy. But I'm way too self-conscious, I think I'd look really ugly w/o my hair :/
hoodoo 25th-Nov-2012 11:46 pm (UTC)
i've always wanted to have super short hair but i dont have the confidence for that :( sometimes its just a pain in the ass to take care of my hair
diamantfabriken 25th-Nov-2012 11:26 pm (UTC)
One of the sweetest things I've ever seen was a family of five where every single member shaved their head after the mother started chemotherapy. Nearly started crying from watching them out and about together.
misspinkkate 25th-Nov-2012 11:26 pm (UTC)
They are both beautiful, inside and out! They look cute bald.
filmfreakfranco real talk25th-Nov-2012 11:29 pm (UTC)
would any of you do this?
ectypes Re: real talk25th-Nov-2012 11:32 pm (UTC)
i would if a family member was affected, in solidarity. esp if it was a child. or if i could raise money with it. i'm not an nfl cheerleader though and doubt anybody would gaf.

....i feel guilty for not doing it now

greenfairy_87 Re: real talk26th-Nov-2012 12:21 am (UTC)
Don't be. You have full control over what to do with your body without worrying about judgement.
marywebgirl Re: real talk25th-Nov-2012 11:34 pm (UTC)
I'd consider it for a close friend or family member. I donated hair to Locks of Love and it didn't really phase me.
actxappalledx Re: real talk25th-Nov-2012 11:34 pm (UTC)
no. i don't think i can pull of a short hair style, and my hair is like a security blanket for me. i think it is awesome and amazing that there are women who do do this, though.
showmesara Re: real talk25th-Nov-2012 11:36 pm (UTC)
nope. My hair grows slow enough so I'd be left with a bald head for about two years.
lidahbidah Re: real talk25th-Nov-2012 11:36 pm (UTC)
No.
enema_recipe Re: real talk25th-Nov-2012 11:37 pm (UTC)
I shaved my head when I was 17, for aesthetic reasons at the time. I remember that my head felt awesome and showers were a lot shorter. I don't know if I'd do it again.
julieannie Re: real talk25th-Nov-2012 11:37 pm (UTC)
No. I've had cancer and I would never want someone to do this for me either. There's a lot of issues with people having the choice to cut their hair and the difference between that and my hair coming out in chunks will never compare. I think people do it for themselves more than they do it for other people.
xlionxlambx Re: real talk25th-Nov-2012 11:38 pm (UTC)
In a heartbeat. In fact, I have before. Long time ago.
stabby_mcgee Re: real talk25th-Nov-2012 11:38 pm (UTC)
i would.
boltonlove Re: real talk25th-Nov-2012 11:40 pm (UTC)
I feel like such a shitty person but I know I couldn't do this. My hair makes me a little more confident about myself.
noiresoul Re: real talk25th-Nov-2012 11:42 pm (UTC)
Maybe if I lost a ton of weight but right now I'd look like that bald uncle from the Addams family.
sastra_fuss Re: real talk25th-Nov-2012 11:48 pm (UTC)
no. none of my hair can be accepted for donation and i doubt anyone would feel better if i were bald.
solong_starlet Re: real talk25th-Nov-2012 11:51 pm (UTC)
I'd like to say yes, but I don't think I could bring myself to do it. I've had my hair really short before and hated it, I've spent the last 2 years growing it out and hate just having an inch or so cut off as a trim. >.>
nouns Re: real talk25th-Nov-2012 11:56 pm (UTC)
no, i'd just donate money. me shaving my head isn't gonna find the cure, nor is it really gonna make someone going through chemo more comfortable. to make them more comfortable u can just not act like a jackass when you see a bald woman
solsty Re: real talk25th-Nov-2012 11:57 pm (UTC)
I wouldn't. I like my long hair too much.
hypnology Re: real talk26th-Nov-2012 12:03 am (UTC)
No... but if I had a kid going through it I'd probably do it for them for support.
queen_norleans Re: real talk26th-Nov-2012 12:11 am (UTC)
No.

But not because I wouldn't have the guts. Just because I think shaving my head would be almost trivializing the actual experience that a chemo patient goes through... Their hair coming out in chunks while they're blowing chunks.

I mean, if a friend with cancer was like really struggling with whether to shave their head or wait for it to fall out or something... Then I'd probably do it just to help them along with their decision and to say LET'S DO THIS. But really, it's not going to change anything.
fauxkaren Re: real talk26th-Nov-2012 12:13 am (UTC)
No.
wonderland386 Re: real talk26th-Nov-2012 12:15 am (UTC)
If someone with cancer needed or wanted me to, then yes, absolutely. If it was for a shit ton of money, yes. On my own accord or I thought "Oh this might help ____," nope.
nbyevu Re: real talk26th-Nov-2012 12:24 am (UTC)
I don't know if I ever could. I am losing hair for no reason at all, so it would really freak me out....especially if it was growing back and you could see where the hair wasn't growing.
greenfairy_87 Re: real talk26th-Nov-2012 12:39 am (UTC)
No. My mom has bone marrow cancer, and one time I asked her if she ever lost her hair would she want me to be bald and she immediately said I should love my hair while I still have it and I should be hairy for both of us.
anuhealani Re: real talk26th-Nov-2012 02:20 am (UTC)
I did it early this year. (Not for charity, though; just 'cause.)
ekrelly Re: real talk26th-Nov-2012 02:27 am (UTC)
two of my close friends died from cancer and I've considered it before. One of them had to shave her head twice because she had to go through chemo again after being in remission and she lost so much confidence in her appearance. I've been thinking about doing it in memory of them.
sihaya09 Re: real talk26th-Nov-2012 03:21 am (UTC)
Only if god forbid I had a child with cancer, for solidarity. Otherwise, no. Mostly because I have a round moon-face and would look like a fuckin' cue ball.
gagglefuck Re: real talk26th-Nov-2012 03:26 am (UTC)
honestly, no, i wouldn't. they can take my money, but they'll never take my hair!
drasticsigns Re: real talk26th-Nov-2012 05:35 am (UTC)
yes
hrhobo Re: real talk26th-Nov-2012 06:23 am (UTC)
yeah.
koboldmaki Re: real talk26th-Nov-2012 01:24 pm (UTC)
If I had a friend or family member to whom such a gesture of solidarity mattered, without blinking. For charity, no.
whutness Re: real talk26th-Nov-2012 04:51 pm (UTC)
I would for a family member or close friend.
nachomuchacho 25th-Nov-2012 11:29 pm (UTC)
Proud Colts fan. They've really rallied for Chuck in so many amazing ways.
give_mespace 25th-Nov-2012 11:30 pm (UTC)
wonderful! wish i had the balls to do that

They're adorable! I think Megan looks better bald too :p
breaktheice89 25th-Nov-2012 11:32 pm (UTC)
Wow, that is really sweet of them to do something like this
ascot_gavotte 25th-Nov-2012 11:35 pm (UTC)
that's really cool.
marywebgirl 25th-Nov-2012 11:35 pm (UTC)
bills fan here and i'm totally fine with getting creamed by the colts.

As a Bills fan I'd have a much easier time agreeing with you if the stupid Dolphins had lost *grumble*.

At least the SF/NO game is entertaining.
ebmich 26th-Nov-2012 02:44 am (UTC)
As a Dolphins fans, I say "There's always the Jets to laugh at."
ectypes 26th-Nov-2012 02:53 am (UTC)
lol poor jets... that thurs game was so terrible. fucking patriots.
skankattack 26th-Nov-2012 06:05 am (UTC)
