NFL Cheerleaders Shave Their Heads on National TV to Support Leukemia Research

Who says bald isn't beautiful? Don't tell that to Megan M. and Crystal B., two Indianapolis Colts cheerleaders who agreed to have their heads shaved to benefit leukemia research during the Colts' 20-13 Sunday win over the Buffalo Bills at Indy's Lucas Oil Field. Of course, the fight to cure leukemia has been a major focus of this franchise since head coach Chuck Pagano was diagnosed with the disease in September.

Earlier this month, over two dozen Colts players shaved their heads in a show of support for Pagano, who is undergoing chemotherapy to battle a condition that is in remission, according to recent reports.

The cheerleaders got in the game when Blue, the team's overstuffed blue horse of a mascot, issued a challenge -- if one Colts cheerleader could raise $10,000 for leukemia research by November 25, she'd get her head shaved. That's only a good deal if you're a great person trying to help someone you care about, and that's clearly the case here -- Megan and Crystal raised over $22,000 on time, and sat down for the buzz cuts. Blue began the festivities before somebody more qualified took over.

"I've just had personal experiences with people who have had cancer," Megan told 24-hour News 8's Daniel Miller. "I've had mentors and family members and volunteer at Riley and met little girls who have lost their hair and beat cancer multiple times. Just seeing struggles they went through and how they could overcome that and still have confidence and fight this fight without their hair - they are really my inspiration for doing this."

Megan and Crystal aren't alone. Local salons are donating $10 to "Blue's ChuckStrong Challenge" for every person who agrees to have their heads shaved. 800 fans have had their heads shaved so far, and more than $250,000 has been raised for leukemia research by Colts representatives since the "ChuckStrong" campaign began.

If you would like to know more about the campaign, visit the "ChuckStrong" section of the Colts' official website.

The Colts' organization is filled with high-quality people, but what makes this the feel-good story of the year is that one season after finishing with the a 2-14 record and blowing up the organization in the offseason, this team has a 7-4 record and is in the thick of the AFC playoff race with interim head coach Bruce Arians.

Good for them. I shaved my head before I had chemo and it was the most liberating experience of my life.

My sister is doing chemo right now and I want her to just shave her head before it starts falling out (which I know will be way worse for her), but I also know that's a decision she needs to reach on her own.

Hope you're doing better, bb.

Hope you are doing better! I had (have?) bladder cancer, but the treatment I did is immunotherapy, not chemotherapy, and it didn't cause me to lose my hair. I'm not sure how I would have handled that. So proud of you for being so brave!

I just buzzed my head from about 18 inches and it feels so freeing, I love it. Hope you're better now and still rocking cool hair!

I've been in remission since August of 2010, my hair grew back wavy which was kind of strange. My daughters helped my cut my hair before I shaved it off, it was a good way to help them deal with it as they were only 7 & 10 at the time.

hmmm... i heard that locks of love is the only legit hair donation org that isn't a scam. i could be wrong though.

related: i hear they recently made the requirement for donations a few inches longer than before?
cheeseasauras 25th-Nov-2012 11:23 pm (UTC)
I remember watching a documentary on them a while ago on HBO and it seems legit. I really hope so because I donated like 14 inches to them.
_andrea 25th-Nov-2012 11:23 pm (UTC)
i know a couple people who got wigs from them.
sadisticsidhe 25th-Nov-2012 11:30 pm (UTC)
I've heard the Locks of Love will sell their donations if the hair is 'unusable' which some people don't like. Other than that I think they're supposed to be fairly reputable.
marywebgirl 25th-Nov-2012 11:31 pm (UTC)
I donated my hair to them, and afterward I heard they're not "ethical" so I started doing research. The only real criticism I could find about them is that they sell some of the donations to raise money to make the wigs, so you're not guaranteed that the hair you donate will wind up in a wig donated to a cancer patient.
julieannie 25th-Nov-2012 11:36 pm (UTC)
Totally scammy. It was originally founded to help kids with alopecia get wigs but then it ended up becoming a way for a bunch of rich politician's wives (like Rich Santorum's wife) feel like they have jobs. You can check the board members and financials, it's all public on the Locks of Love website. The organization underwent a bit of a shakedown in 2007 but it's still fairly crappy.

It took them a decade to sell/donate 2000 wigs while the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program did that in its first year. No one with cancer gets a wig from Locks of Love. Locks of Love really does throw most of the hair they receive out. They say it themselves. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/06/fashion/06locks.html

wow :/
deathbytamarind 26th-Nov-2012 03:12 am (UTC)
Thanks for posting this. Whenever I bring this up people bawww at me for not supporting cancer victims or other nonsensical shit. It really annoys me when I mention I'm getting a haircut and a person is all "omg donate to Locks of Love!" Also IIRC they don't accept dyed hair and I color my hair, so that's that.
ohkimosabe 26th-Nov-2012 12:04 am (UTC)
i hope not since i donated my hair to them.
vanishingbee 25th-Nov-2012 11:18 pm (UTC)

Good for them!

I have to give girls like this so many props. I could never have the courage to shave my head. They're much stronger and braver than I am. Good for them!
d00ditsemily 25th-Nov-2012 11:22 pm (UTC)
I'm kind of glad to be seeing women do this instead of men tbh
ectypes 25th-Nov-2012 11:25 pm (UTC)
colts players also shaved their heads, but ia w/ you in a way
d00ditsemily 26th-Nov-2012 12:12 am (UTC)
i'm just saying hair isn't the same to men as it is to women. In today's world it's okay for a man to be bald, especially when ti comes to doing something like this. But when a woman does it it really is putting your money where your mouth is and raises awareness way more than a man would by doing this.
vonlisbon 25th-Nov-2012 11:27 pm (UTC)
I attended some thing about a year ago to raise money for cancer, and yeah, as hard as the promoters tried, it was difficult to get the crowd all jizzed over a guy with 3" hair getting his head shaved.
solong_starlet 25th-Nov-2012 11:48 pm (UTC)
Especially cheerleaders in this case, when their only real purpose is to look good while cheering.
