Elizabeth Smart Writing Memoir

Photobucket

Ten years after she was abducted, Elizabeth Smart is penning a memoir about the nine months she was held, often in chains, and raped almost daily.

Now married and a senior at Brigham Young University, Smart, 25, is co-writing her story with Chris Stewart, a Utah Congressman-elect.

"She has taken a professional outlook on this and is able to talk in an impressive way about these things frankly," Stewart said.

"She is not shying away from this story."

I read an article where students admitted as much - saying they were one of the most physically fit schools because they were there to find spouses.

lol don't doubt it. I was raised mormon & had a friend who went to BYU-- she was completely the opposite of that boy-crazy-must-find-a-husband thing though... and so everyone thought she was strange.

All three of my next door neighbors growing were Mormons and they all went to BYU and all got married their sophomore year. Two now have kids and they're 23 and 22 respectively. Both are now housewives with honors degrees in chemistry they'll never use. One always wanted to be a doctor and now she's put that aside to be the perfect Mormon housewife.

yeah that's what aggravated me the most as a teen in the church-- everything was based around getting married and being a wife... they had programs for the young girls that were meant to "better us" by having us set goals and such... but the goals all seemed to revolve around the same "marriage/being a good person/etc..." stuff.. while, i'm a big dreamer & a big career-oriented person and never want to get married, so it didn't really suit me all that well.

Someone I went to grad school with went to BYU, served her mission overseas, came back and got her MA before she met her husband. She's one of those die-hards except when it comes to putting being a housewife first. She's getting her Ph.D. at like Columbia now.

Very awesome.

I mean, there are people like that in the church as well-- but most of the girls end up just being housewives. They seem happy with that though, so good for them I suppose. I just can't imagine being that way at all.

I'm glad my mom's always been supportive of me being different and wanting more in life. haha.

I live with two Mormons, both younger than me (I'm 26) and marriage/dating is all they seem concerned with. It makes me sad as someone who's pretty devoted to her career/has a MA/doesn't want her life to revolve around a husband.
