Elizabeth Smart Writing Memoir

Photobucket

Ten years after she was abducted, Elizabeth Smart is penning a memoir about the nine months she was held, often in chains, and raped almost daily.

Now married and a senior at Brigham Young University, Smart, 25, is co-writing her story with Chris Stewart, a Utah Congressman-elect.

"She has taken a professional outlook on this and is able to talk in an impressive way about these things frankly," Stewart said.

"She is not shying away from this story."

i still can't believe how everything went down and she made it out alive
hannahgrace456 25th-Nov-2012 07:01 am (UTC)
Same. Whenever I think of kidnapped children I just can't believe they're ever coming home. It's a miracle she survived what she did.
m_e_h7 24th-Nov-2012 09:14 pm (UTC)
I can't even begin to imagine what she went through. Good for her for getting on with her life. She seems so strong.
juteux 24th-Nov-2012 09:14 pm (UTC)
Oh that will be interesting to read. Except I'm sure there will be a bunch of godly nonsense.
squirrels_oh_no 24th-Nov-2012 09:16 pm (UTC)
That's one thing that makes me wary. It's seemed at times that LDS is using her as a marketing tool.
so_chic_doll 24th-Nov-2012 09:17 pm (UTC)
eh. she's just open about her faith. i don't really see the church discussing her (although i haven't attended church in like 5 years)
handsdowntoo 24th-Nov-2012 09:18 pm (UTC)
Even if it is, if thats what got her through it personally I can't hate even if I think its BS. You'd need something to believe in when in a situation like that.
lexiesloan 24th-Nov-2012 09:18 pm (UTC)
What's wrong with her believing in something? It's obviously a big part of who she is.
mattthew 24th-Nov-2012 10:10 pm (UTC)
well, with her religion, and what she went through, i'd be surprised if there wasn't even a word about religion. religion can be a source of strength and coping for some people, and in that sense i can't knock it. it's when religion is turned and used against other people in an ungodly way that gets me up in arms about it. have your faith, but don't use it as a weapon against people.
ilovedogs 24th-Nov-2012 11:54 pm (UTC)
Yes. In reading about her since then, there is always a hint of how their prayer helped her come back to them.

I hate that because I am quite sure that plenty of other parents/family/friends of missing people pray a lot too.

I hate the "God loves us best" attitude some people adopt.
hannahgrace456 25th-Nov-2012 07:00 am (UTC)
So? Given what she went through, I don't think anyone should be criticizing how she coped with it. Religion can really help people and if that's what got her through nine months of torture and fear then no one should be knocking it.
flashnights 24th-Nov-2012 09:15 pm (UTC)
i still can't get over the fact that she was let outside in public and never went for help
catcase 24th-Nov-2012 09:20 pm (UTC)
I can. This man kidnapped her from her HOME. She knew he had access to her parents and her little sister, which he surely used as leverage, not to mention all of the psychological warfare he and his accomplice heaped on her daily—she was a kid trying to survive.
so_chic_doll 24th-Nov-2012 09:38 pm (UTC)
mte.
idgi 24th-Nov-2012 10:55 pm (UTC)
agreed. just like shawn hornbeck, he even had computer access but he was brainwashed and psychologically manipulated. and jaycee dugard. when they suspected she was jaycee, she kept denying that and she was saying she was from Minnesota and her name was alyssa.
hoot 25th-Nov-2012 12:05 am (UTC)
Yeah, she said he threatened to kill her family all the time. Poor thing was terrified and didn't know what to do.
fwee_prower 24th-Nov-2012 09:33 pm (UTC)
if it was like 2 or three days after i wouldn't understand why maybe but anything longer, it makes sense she didn't
lovedhurtlost 24th-Nov-2012 09:49 pm (UTC)
Yeah, we're the same age, so I couldn't get over that when I heard the details after she was found. My 16 year old self was confused as fuck.
dancemusic 24th-Nov-2012 09:54 pm (UTC)
ia with what maerhys said

also i think shawn hornbeck had a friend while in captivity and even saw his own missing ad while he was at the kid's house but never said anything
fierywaif 24th-Nov-2012 10:07 pm (UTC)
She said something in her trial that she felt ashamed and worthless because she'd been raped and feared going home or something like that.
mattthew 24th-Nov-2012 10:11 pm (UTC)
with how young she was? captors really fuck with their victims head. i mean i know it wasn't stockholm syndrome and she wasn't in love with her captor, but the manipulation and the fear can keep many a victim in line.
flashnights 24th-Nov-2012 10:21 pm (UTC)
too lazy to reply to everyone but i didn't follow the story religiously but i heard a cop legit came up to her and asked if she was elizabeth smart...wouldn't you trust a cop to help your fam as well if you were scared about that? w/e idek how long she was captured so ig they could've messed with her mind...

Jaycee Duggard was out in public A LOT and never once went for help or told someone who she was. She even worked for her kidnapper's business and spoke to the neighbors. In her book she said she was so terrified and brainwashed that it was like she literally couldn't say anything, and also the fact that people didn't just recognize her on the spot or see that something was wrong made her feel invisible.

I'm guessing Elizabeth's experiences aren't too far off. Her kidnapper probably used her religion against her. Told her things like "Your parents will never love you if you tell them what we're doing!", etc. I'm sure this book will shed light on the topic of her going out in public.
agatharuncible 25th-Nov-2012 05:00 am (UTC)
like maerhys said, he knew where she lived so I'm sure he used that to blackmail her. I just wiki'd her because I couldn't remember the details, and wiki says that when she was abducted he told her that if she tried to call for help while they were still in/near the house he'd kill her family. it's not too crazy to believe that he'd do the same afterwards.

idk how much supervision she had when she was outside, but if she was w/ them, they could sabotage her efforts to get help pretty easily.
leopard_legs 25th-Nov-2012 02:25 pm (UTC)
I hate to add to the thread, but it's so common to be manipulated to never want to leave your kidnapper/believe they'll kill you the second you look a bit shifty. I read Natascha Kampusch's book and it was a really fascinating insight into the unbelievable trauma she endured at her kidnappers hand...towards the end of her time with him she had numerous chances to escape but just couldn't because of the mental block he'd put in place.
handsdowntoo 24th-Nov-2012 09:17 pm (UTC)
I'd read it. I was obsessed with that case. I was probably like in middle school.
pilotparties21 24th-Nov-2012 09:19 pm (UTC)
did she ever say what rly happened? i know the guy and his wife tried to make her their slave or something and changed her looks
bent_ley 24th-Nov-2012 10:14 pm (UTC)
yeah she testified in court
sweeetkiwi 24th-Nov-2012 09:19 pm (UTC)
cant wait to read it
stussytribe 24th-Nov-2012 09:21 pm (UTC)
wow i thought that was elisha cuthbert tbh
pilotparties21 24th-Nov-2012 09:21 pm (UTC)
whoa she was kidnapped for 9 mos? i thought it was a few days or a week oop
mattthew 24th-Nov-2012 10:12 pm (UTC)
yeah i thought it was longer than that tbh. i thought it was YEARS.
idgi 24th-Nov-2012 10:56 pm (UTC)
you're thinking of jaycee dugard, who as missing for 18 and had two kids with the man who abducted her.
_thirty2flavors 24th-Nov-2012 09:22 pm (UTC)
Whenever I hear about her I always think of that video where she's on Nancy Grace to talk about something else and Nancy Grace keeps trying to derail into Elizabeth's personal story and Elizabeth just shuts her down, lol.
handsdowntoo 24th-Nov-2012 09:24 pm (UTC)
Yeah. That was awesome. I was surprised with how self-assured she is.
bluesforgotten 24th-Nov-2012 09:25 pm (UTC)
I loved that.

quotequeen20 24th-Nov-2012 09:31 pm (UTC)
I was just going to post that.
She was awesome.
hannahgrace456 25th-Nov-2012 06:54 am (UTC)
That is pure gold. My dad starting cheering at the TV when he saw that.
leopard_legs 25th-Nov-2012 02:37 pm (UTC)
I haven't seen said video (I'll watch it later when I have sound) but anyone who manages to survive a traumatic kidnapping/imprisonment and then goes on to shut down Nancy Grace sounds like a living legend to me
tigerfan28 24th-Nov-2012 09:22 pm (UTC)
The made for TV movie was hard enough to watch, I can't imagine trying to read it in her own words. Unreal what she went through. :(
inboots 24th-Nov-2012 09:22 pm (UTC)
omw wiki has a "children kept in captivity" page

horrified, but can't stop reading - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Children_kept_in_captivity
tigerfan28 24th-Nov-2012 09:25 pm (UTC)

honeychuckles 24th-Nov-2012 10:49 pm (UTC)
oh god, I remember getting sucked into reading about this one case (can't remember the name) that has haunted me since. It was about a girl who was kidnapped, or maybe she was a stepchild, can't remember and the woman locked her up in the basement for several years and would abuse her and even had her own children get in on it. Just the worst :( They made a movie about it, its supposedly one of the most controversial movies of all time.
bunny_lita 24th-Nov-2012 10:04 pm (UTC)
I got sucked into that page one day too. I was horrified too, but I couldn't stop.
thesegoto11 24th-Nov-2012 10:09 pm (UTC)
I remember when I first read about elisabeth fritzl. it haunts me.
mattthew 24th-Nov-2012 10:13 pm (UTC)
i can't do it

not only will it make me depressed, i can't and won't lose myself in wikipedia. i did it one night reading about serial killers. never again.
leopard_legs 25th-Nov-2012 02:45 pm (UTC)
oh shit
I am not leaving the internet today
cossard 24th-Nov-2012 09:23 pm (UTC)
it's bizarre how she's like a media figure/celebrity now. like her wedding photos were on the cover of 'people'? lol wtf?
tvwizard 24th-Nov-2012 09:30 pm (UTC)
i'm not too surprised. the news seems to grab on to certain kidnapped children, and the fact that she was found (especially so long after being kidnapped) made her story even more memorable/newsworthy.

this being said, i hate both the selective coverage of kidnapped children on the news and how this country's obsession with people who have suffered through a tragedy.
ilovedogs 25th-Nov-2012 12:07 am (UTC)
I agree. Every time the media picks up on some little pretty white girl being kidnapped, I feel like screaming my head off.

Not that I don't care about that child, but what about all the other kids?
fancypiink 26th-Nov-2012 06:22 am (UTC)
tbh i figure it's because she's a thin, conventionally attractive, young white woman.
obrien 24th-Nov-2012 11:01 pm (UTC)
Yeah I think that's really weird that she had a People cover for her wedding... nothing wrong with her being the face of survival or anything though.
bluesforgotten 24th-Nov-2012 09:26 pm (UTC)
I don't agree with her faith, but I think she seems like a very strong woman. Mormon families get a lot of flack but she obviously has a wonderful support system to grow into such a self-assured, confident woman - I mean, when she stood up to Nancy Grace I about died. Don't know that I could read her memoir though.
mattthew 24th-Nov-2012 10:14 pm (UTC)
that's the thing. religion can be great. it gives people faith, hope, something to lean on when they can't understand something. it's a support system... and i can't knock it for that... but when it's used as a weapon and to but other people down, it just makes me smh.
hannahgrace456 25th-Nov-2012 06:56 am (UTC)
IA. Given what she went through, I don't think anyone has the right to criticize how she handled or what she claims got her through it. In her situation, she could've been praying to dirt for magical powers and I would've been okay with. The people that criticize her talking about her faith are really inconsiderate.
lucciolaa 24th-Nov-2012 09:31 pm (UTC)
Her story is so so terrifying. I'm so sorry that someone had to go through that.
