Beauty/Gossip Magazines Survey: The Results

idris & jlaw

So yesterday I had some of you take a survey for a research project that I'm doing. I'm looking at how white standards of beauty are being perpetuated by magazines (such as favoring light-skinned WOC -- who are closer to the white beauty ideal -- over dark-skinned WOC, excluding non-white people altogether, etc.) and what effect this has on women. I got a little over 500 responses, but then I had to delete a few, and I ended up with exactly 500. Some of you wanted to see the results of the survey and so I've compiled it into one post. Here are the results:

(1) gender
(2) age range
(3) race ethnicity
(4) magazines
(5) how often - magazines
(6) fairly represent

(7) rate yourself
(8) change your appearance
(9) appearance

Most people wanted to change their weight, specifically they wanted to lose weight: lose a few pounds here and there, slim down their thighs, lose a lot of weight (more than 15 pounds), get liposuction, etc. A couple people said they wanted to gain weight. The second thing most people wanted to change was their nose: slim it down, fix a bump or something else they felt was wrong with it, etc. The third thing was breasts. Most people said they wanted to get a breast lift, the second was breast augmentation, the third was a breast reduction. The fourth thing was skin, specifically having to do with complexion: getting rid of acne, scars, blemishes, , stretch marks, skin disorders, evening out skin tone, etc. Six people said they wanted to have lighter skin and two people said they wanted to have darker skin. Next was hair: changing their hair texture or getting rid of unwanted body hair permanently.

I am the exact opposite lol

For the dudes: "Tom Hiddleston! He seems lovely.."

For the women: "LET ME SHOW YOU A LIST OF EVERY SINGLE WOMAN EVER"

I wonder about myself sometimes.

hahahahah, I know, that I look at the results, I'm like "Mila Kunis? Leighton? Rachel McAdams? All super hot bitches I would've put on my list, if I could've remembered."

I don't even want to talk about the random ass guys I had on that list.

tbh i think it's because the media spends more time telling us who we should look like rather than what man we should find hot. so we know more about the looks of female celebs.

Lol same I had trouble with men but I had to restrain myself from listing more than 5 women.
ms_mmelissa 23rd-Nov-2012 07:00 pm (UTC)
LOL me too.

I think it's because I spend more time considering who I'd like to look like then who I'd like to bang. Which is kind of depressing.

joaniemaloney 24th-Nov-2012 02:33 am (UTC)
haha it was so much easier to think of women, for sure.
anydoppelganger 26th-Nov-2012 10:10 pm (UTC)
Same. It was really easy to come up with a list of women but I had a hard time with the men. My male cousin had an easier time coming up with men than women. Don't know why that is.
