The production company Dresden Pictures acquired the British rights to produce a live-action film adaptation of Akiyuki Nosaka's semi-autobiographical novel Grave of the Fireflies. Producers Liam Garvo and James Heath aim to begin shooting a film in 2014. The story follows a brother and sister's struggle to survive in the waning months of World War II.
Isao Takahata and Studio Ghibli animated the story into an acclaimed 1988 film (pictured right) that was double-billed with Hayao Miyazaki and Ghibli's My Neighbor Totoro. Central Park Media, ADV Films, and later Sentai Filmworks released the film on home video in North America, and GKids just acquired the North American theatrical rights from Toho Co., LTD.
More recently, NTV produced Toya Sato's live-action television movie retelling to mark the 60th anniversary's of the war's end in 2005. Dresden Pictures is the first overseas company to obtain the rights for the story.
