'Mindy Project' cast shakeup: Anna Camp now recurring, Amanda Setton exits

There's some major tinkering going down at FOX's "The Mindy Project": co-star Anna Camp will shift from full-time regular to recurring status, while Amanda Setton will exit the series.

The critically acclaimed first-year comedy already received an expanded full-season order from FOX, but has struggled to find an audience in its five airings to date.

Your life is like a sad romantic comedyCollapse )

Amanda Setton will always be Kim from One Life to Live.

I am not giving up on this show yet bc I want to like it and I feel like most shows find their groove around episode 7, but after tonight's episode I totally knew they'd kick that one girl off the show. I wish they wouldn't downplay Anna Camp though, maybe try to fit her in more somehow

Didn't mindy find out that her boyfriend (the blond guy) was engaged???? Or even married? Did I make this up, or was that resolved?
kamikashi 21st-Nov-2012 06:35 am (UTC)
josh? engaged/married? i don think that was in any episode unless im forgetting it too...
legenxxdary 21st-Nov-2012 06:37 am (UTC)
yeah I've only been casually watching (like usually doing homework at the same time) but I thought there was some scene where she was Facebook stalking him and saw that he was engaged or something... Maybe I'm confusing it with another show. But I've been waiting for them to go back to that lol but I guess it just didn't happen

Bill Hader's character is engaged. Josh, her boyfriend, wants them to be exclusive despite him being questionable. And Ed Helms' character has a girlfriend - he dated Mindy once and it went badly.

i think she found out that her ex-boyfriend that she dated before the show aired is engaged or married by fb stalking him
laurie_springs 21st-Nov-2012 06:46 am (UTC)
I swear I thought that too until the end of the ep where they went out. Holy shit that scene where she found out about who the fuck ever it was was horribly written.

I did not realize this show had fallen out of favor with ONTD, but I am loving it. It's growing on me more and more. Last week's episode was perfection, from Mindy's boyfriend putting on her pants ("It is NOT the same thing at all!") to the awkward breast exam with Danny. I like her relationship with Josh and her clearly future one with Danny - they are oddly realistic and not like what you typically see on TV. I like the sweet, weird little office girl, and root for her with the British doc. The male nurse has grown on me a lot.

These leavings make sense. I really enjoyed the best friend relationship, especially in tonight's episode, but the character did not fit integrate with the rest of the show at all, and it always felt weird when she popped in. I love Amanda Setton, but she was playing the exact same character she played on OLTL, and that sort of over-the-top campiness did not transfer well from daytime to primetime.
tube_fiend 21st-Nov-2012 06:38 am (UTC)
Also, the ending of tonight's episode was weird. Mindy texted Danny the pic, he texted her back "Happy Turkey," then she texted him.... something that made him smile. It was weird. I kept waiting to see what the text said.

lol I loved the bf in her pants bit b/c of how mad she actually got. Something I would do for sure.
fauxkaren 21st-Nov-2012 07:08 am (UTC)
IA. I like the show a lot.
ellaellaeheheh 21st-Nov-2012 01:25 pm (UTC)
this. I also love the show.
roguedandelion 21st-Nov-2012 02:59 pm (UTC)
lol yep. I love it. ONTD is just extraordinarily fickle and waiting to jump all over everything and shit on it.

I just don't want her to get with danny, I like what's happening with Josh and Mindy's other dates/ boyfriends are really entertaining as well. I like Danny being grumpy on the sidelines.
quinnthevixen 21st-Nov-2012 04:00 pm (UTC)
I don't necessarily love it but I like it and am rooting for it to succeed. I want it to happen!
bighype 22nd-Nov-2012 01:53 am (UTC)
lol ia. i think it needs to tone down some of the characters but otherwise i like it a lot. i think it's funy how critical people are of TMP but not as much about "girls"
tvisgood 21st-Nov-2012 06:38 am (UTC)
Too bad it's too late for Penelope to come back. Her accent on the show is ridiculous, though.

lol wat ontd I love this show.

I totally didn't recognize Josh as that incest-y arsonist unsub in that one ep of CM tho. he is qt
mcpofife 21st-Nov-2012 06:56 am (UTC)
hmm, I'm fine w/the reduced BFF role. I enjoy their interactions though, so as long as she's not completely gone, that's fine.

Wonder what the "creative reasons" were. Maybe she didn't want to just be eye candy; that's understandable. tbh she's the only character whose leaving isn't a big loss to the show, so I guess that says it all.

I hope the show does well! I'd be sad if it didn't stick around.
boweeko 21st-Nov-2012 06:57 am (UTC)
This show has so much potential and I love Mindy but it needs to really figure itself out soon. The episodes so far have been all over the place, and I am really confused by this supporting cast.

Mindy needs to go watch season 2 of Parks and Rec to take note of how to develop a supporting cast and find the show's groove.
mcpofife 21st-Nov-2012 07:01 am (UTC)
Oh, the one thing I will say I don't find cute on the show is that we're obviously supposed to be rooting for Mindy/Danny endgame, but they cross the line w/each other at times to the point where I can't.

Like, she says rude things to him about his divorce when it's a painful subject to him, and he calls her fat. I guess we're supposed to find that cute? I feel like, why should people who talk to each other like that date? I like them as friends, but I can't root for someone to date a person who body-shames them or someone who uses their painful divorce against them.

I also found it really creepy that he wanted to be her ob/gyn, even if he was only saying it to ~test her. It was gross that he would even suggest it when he is attracted to her and she doesn't realize it.

ETA: Oh! And I love Mindy's delivery and timing, but she mumbles. Sometimes I have to rewind 3 times just to figure out what she's saying, and it's often a really clever line.

I really don't like Danny. Yeah, Mindy says mean things to him about his divorce, but the thing is Danny is a downright asshole. He calls her fat, his breakdown of her projected possibility of having children last week was downright awful, and just...yeah, I don't like it. If he talked to his wife like that, no wonder he's divorced.
mcpofife 21st-Nov-2012 04:19 pm (UTC)
the breakdown was awful, yeah. He has a lot of issues, but I feel like at heart he's not a bad guy. He just needs a shit ton of therapy. As far as "no wonder he's divorced", we don't know what his wife or their relationship was like, so I can't say it was all him. But yeah, they've made him so jacked up that I can't root for a relationship for him until he gets his issues sorted.
pivotandsway 21st-Nov-2012 04:45 pm (UTC)
yeah it's completely disgusting.
actxappalledx 21st-Nov-2012 03:14 pm (UTC)
Idk, I think their relationship is oddly realistic, tbh. They remind me of the kids in elementary school who like each other and show it by being cruel to one another. I don't think he actually thinks she's fat, either - I think they were both just picking out on something they know the other is insecure about to purposely hurt one another.

same :\

just saw Anna and the British guy from the show at a special screening of Hitchcock. couldn't tell if they were on a date or friends. they are both pretty IRL.
jackpeyton 21st-Nov-2012 07:20 am (UTC)
good choice, even tho i love AS
syzygy09 21st-Nov-2012 07:21 am (UTC)
The cast on this show isn't necessarily bulky, but it definitely lacks focus. Aside from Mindy, who am I supposed to care about? (or remember?)

In other words, I'm okay with people leaving.

I haven't watched last night's episode yet, but I'm still getting second-hand embarrassment and residual laughs from last week's opening scene -- him putting on her jeans...so uncomfortably hilarious.

This show has potential and I'm sticking with it.
my_whyte_noise 21st-Nov-2012 07:23 am (UTC)
that Setton chick reminded me of a watered down version of Jennifer Esposito in Samantha Who?, ya?
golden_train 21st-Nov-2012 07:23 am (UTC)
this show is horrid.
londonaster 21st-Nov-2012 07:28 am (UTC)
I like it but not as much as New Girl and Don't Trust the B in Apt 23.
hateistoodark 21st-Nov-2012 07:43 am (UTC)
Don't trust the b is hilarious.
hera_bearrra 21st-Nov-2012 11:46 am (UTC)
Don't Trust the B is my new favorite show. It's hilarious.

can't get into the second one. I tried but it didn't connect.
