'Mindy Project' cast shakeup: Anna Camp now recurring, Amanda Setton exits

There's some major tinkering going down at FOX's "The Mindy Project": co-star Anna Camp will shift from full-time regular to recurring status, while Amanda Setton will exit the series.

The critically acclaimed first-year comedy already received an expanded full-season order from FOX, but has struggled to find an audience in its five airings to date.

Camp plays the best friend of Mindy Kaling's character Mindy Lahiri and TVLine reports that the actress asked to be "taken off contract" so she can "pursue other opportunities" while continuing her "Mindy" role in a reduced capacity. (NOOOOOOO)

"Mindy" fans may have seen this coming: the show hasn't had the easiest time integrating Camp's character into storylines that largely concern Mindy's professional and dating life. Additionally, Camp recently appeared on the big screen in the sleeper success "Pitch Perfect."

Setton's character -- sexpot receptionist Shauna -- fit more naturally into the storylines, but the actress' exit comes down to "creative reasons."

TVLine additionally notes that "Mindy" plans to introduce a new female character soon: Maggie, a tomboyish college friend of Mindy's, who could become a series regular.

but idgi
the setton one is so much more attractive
fauxkaren 21st-Nov-2012 06:05 am (UTC)
Yeah, but she was pretty unfunny.

Not that Betsy is particularly funny either, but she has her moments.

but she was also a terrible actress with the worst "new york" accent ever
pineandapple 21st-Nov-2012 05:32 pm (UTC)
what? That was a new york accent?
alaynestone 21st-Nov-2012 06:04 am (UTC)

Sad, tbh.
fauxkaren 21st-Nov-2012 06:04 am (UTC)
Don't curr about Shauna, but I did actually really enjoy Gwen and Mindy's relationship.

But it always felt kind of awkward when they shoehorned her. Sometimes I think the show has trouble finding a balance between being about Mindy's life in general and being about the office.
bananasnrum 21st-Nov-2012 06:05 am (UTC)
neither of them added much to the show
warsawed 21st-Nov-2012 06:11 am (UTC)
like the rest of the cast lol
bananasnrum 21st-Nov-2012 06:34 am (UTC)
Jeremy adds a lot... of accent.
narco_chan 21st-Nov-2012 06:05 am (UTC)
wow that picture of amanda is SUPER unflattering

I really like the mindy project.... especially last weeks episode.
mixtupbutterfly 21st-Nov-2012 06:14 am (UTC)
Is she the one on the right? I don't watch so I don't know. But DAMN that is not a good picture!!! She looks... creepy.
narco_chan 21st-Nov-2012 06:22 am (UTC)
yesss shes STUNNING imo

squirrels_oh_no 21st-Nov-2012 06:06 am (UTC)
I've seen every episode and I don't think this show has really found itself yet. The characters aren't utilized well and Mindy is unlikable as much as she is likeable. It's like Lena Dunham is writing for this show half the time. It's strange.
fenchurchly 21st-Nov-2012 06:07 am (UTC)
Totally agree. I think if given some time they could find a groove. I like it enough to keep watching it every week but they need to make the rest of the cast more relatable/likable so it's not just all about Mindy. They made that change with New Girl pretty successfully, I think.
squirrels_oh_no 21st-Nov-2012 06:09 am (UTC)
I talk about the show in terms of how unlikeable the characters are, which as it turns out means most of them are very unlikeable. I can't really think of one character that I love. Which is ridiculous.
hershelwalker 21st-Nov-2012 06:09 am (UTC)
ia, and the cliched gender role bs they push is so annoying and ott. I never liked mindy on the office but I think she's really funny on this show. the jokes are well written but the whole concept just needs to be...toned down a bit.
warsawed 21st-Nov-2012 06:11 am (UTC)
IA I hope it gets better tho bc I am here for Mindy having her own show
marmar627 21st-Nov-2012 06:54 am (UTC)
Dead-on analysis
scornedsaint 21st-Nov-2012 12:27 pm (UTC)
I stopped watching because of the uneven writing (I literally turned it off halfway through last week's episode). And ever since I saw that picture of the very all white male writing staff, I've been really disappointed.
kafkaesque 22nd-Nov-2012 01:43 am (UTC)
yeah im giving it some time. hopefully they fix it up a bit because they have some potentially good material here.
milkradio 23rd-Nov-2012 03:04 pm (UTC)
ia. Half the time, I think "This is pretty funny and cute" and the other half I think "Wow, this is really mean humour and not in a successful way like with Arrested Development and these characters are either annoying or douchebags." It's all over the place.
fenchurchly 21st-Nov-2012 06:06 am (UTC)
Interesting. I love Anna Camp and I actually thought she fit well in the series. Amanda Setton just wasn't given enough to do, imho. I way prefer her over the other girl in the office (Betsy??) who drives me insane and reminds me too much of the Up All Night Ava's assistant character.
wonderwomanhero 21st-Nov-2012 06:07 am (UTC)
You know...I was thinking. If Anna wants to pursue other opportunities then maybe she could get back on True Blood!

squirrels_oh_no 21st-Nov-2012 06:08 am (UTC)
I had no clue that that character was named Betsy until this thread. I just called her "The Weird Unlikable Perky Idiot".
wickedground 21st-Nov-2012 10:44 am (UTC)
she really is a clone of Ava's assistant...who I kinda miss.
fauxkaren 21st-Nov-2012 06:06 am (UTC)
I think my favorite episode thus far is the Halloween one.

I am not here for Mindy/Danny, so I am enjoying the Mindy/Josh relationship for what it is right now for as long as it lasts.
wonderwomanhero 21st-Nov-2012 06:09 am (UTC)
This news is just as bad as my boo's death in a box on Boardwalk Empire and Team Dragonstone's unexpected absence from a majority of season 3. I NEED TO GRIEVE.
fauxkaren 21st-Nov-2012 06:13 am (UTC)
My expectations for season 3 of GoT are so low.
xcollsangelx 21st-Nov-2012 08:43 am (UTC)
I loathe Danny/Mindy. It better never ever happen. I hate some of the things he's said to her.

scornedsaint 21st-Nov-2012 12:28 pm (UTC)
I do not understand why we are supposed to be shipping Mindy and Danny. I get some ~unresolved sexual tension~, but the characters seem to legit hate each other.
cricketgrl 21st-Nov-2012 01:17 pm (UTC)
They faux tension between Danny/Mindy is just terrible. I don't know why the writers think they are being clever by creating that sub-storyline when it's not believable.

Also mindy/danny have the worst chemistry on the show.
hershelwalker 21st-Nov-2012 06:07 am (UTC)
don't care about either of them. now if only they'd get rid of dr. catalano or w/e his name is. what a god awful character.
hopelessoptmist 21st-Nov-2012 06:09 am (UTC)
I'll admit to totally having a crush on Anna Camp as Sarah Newlin in True Blood.
wonderwomanhero 21st-Nov-2012 06:09 am (UTC)
hopelessoptmist 21st-Nov-2012 06:16 am (UTC)
yup it was THIS scene exactly that did it

ettabea 21st-Nov-2012 06:10 am (UTC)
Not related to cast changes but I was confused by yest. shows ending. A recap said Danny ending up going to Gwens party. I think he just went home.
kamikashi 21st-Nov-2012 06:22 am (UTC)
huh? i didnt get that he went to gwens party at all, i think he just went home too. i mean, it was hella late anyway and the party would basically be over by the time he got there. he just seemed happy he got texts from mindy and left.
stellar_ball 21st-Nov-2012 06:30 am (UTC)
They didn't show what he texted back, did they? Cause then he got a text right back and then was all happy and left and it was just weird. If they were trying to make it seem like he was just happy to get a text from her, then it was shown in a weird way.
ettabea 21st-Nov-2012 07:03 am (UTC)
Yeah, Im sticking with he went home too. But I was left a little "what" at the end of the ep and went searching and found this

"As for Danny, it turns out he doesn't want to spend Thanksgiving alone after all. The closing scene ends with him rushing out the door after getting a text from Mindy. Someone was aching for a little time with friends and family."

I think she was projected. But if that is what they were trying to convey ... fail
hera_bearrra 21st-Nov-2012 06:48 am (UTC)
Such a weird episode
godrevypoint 21st-Nov-2012 06:11 am (UTC)
this show is too all over the place. also i hate the girl who plays the other receptionist with the lisp. couldn't they have found ANYONE else to play her.
fenchurchly 21st-Nov-2012 06:14 am (UTC)
She's truly awful.
wits 21st-Nov-2012 06:11 am (UTC)
this show hasn't figured itself out yet, i have a hope they can figure it out though
p2bab 21st-Nov-2012 06:12 am (UTC)
I can't @ the Chris Messina hate.
redaodai 21st-Nov-2012 06:17 am (UTC)
I want to say they lessened his douchery a little bit, but sometimes it comes back in full force. They need to make up their mind about him.
the_wolski 21st-Nov-2012 06:19 am (UTC)
he's the worst part of the show and deserves it
p2bab 21st-Nov-2012 06:20 am (UTC)
:( but he's a good actor
wonderwomanhero 21st-Nov-2012 06:21 am (UTC)
Ike Barinholtz sucks too tho

chris being on the show was one of the main reasons I started watching
roguewave3 21st-Nov-2012 08:42 am (UTC)

I love him because of Six Feet Under. His character is an asshole but I have a soft spot because he is playing him.
xcollsangelx 21st-Nov-2012 08:44 am (UTC)
I hate, hate, hate, hate his character.

actxappalledx 21st-Nov-2012 03:02 pm (UTC)
I like him and his character for the most part, just not the things he says to Mindy. They need to cool it with that
kafkaesque 22nd-Nov-2012 01:46 am (UTC)
same omg i loved him on six feet under
