Chris Hemsworth Marvels At 'Avengers' Success

Chris Hemsworth certainly has much to be thankful for this year. He's already starred in two huge blockbusters, shot a much-anticipated biopic with Ron Howard (Hemsworth plays famed Formula 1 race car driver James Hunt) and, last but certainly not least, he's added the title of "dad" to his résumé (his wife Elsa Pataky gave birth to a daughter in May).

But we at MTV News are thankful too — not just for Hemsworth's blossoming career, but for the colossal against-all-odds fan favorite that "The Avengers" became. We're still not sure how Joss Whedon did it, but we can say we're happy he did, and we're thrilled he's coming back for more with the sequel, due in 2015.

Speaking on behalf of his fellow superheroes, Hemsworth jumped on the phone with MTV News after a long day of work in London shooting "Thor: The Dark World." The always-affable Australian reflected on "Avengers," gave some hints of trouble at home for Thor and pondered picking up a lightsaber one day.

MTV: You had another hell of a year, Chris. Congratulations. "Snow White and the Huntsman," "Red Dawn" and, of course "The Avengers." We at MTV News are very much thankful for how well that film turned out.

Chris Hemsworth: Thank you and thanks to all the fans who supported us.

MTV: Were you confident during the making of the movie that it was going to turn out as well as it did?

Hemsworth: No! There was a lot of uncertainty, because there is no sure formula to it. This was so big and there were so many elements and so much green screen. It was hard to grasp exactly what this was and what it was going to be. I remember [Robert] Downey [Jr.] and I were talking during the shoot going, "I don't know how this going to turn out." And then at the premiere when it was being so well-received, we were like, " Oh my God, we pulled it off! Who would have thought ... " You just never know.

MTV: Are there any films you are particularly thankful for this year?

Hemsworth: I hadn't read the "Hunger Games" book but was blown away by the film. "Dark Knight Rises"; Chris Nolan's a genius. That's someone I would love to get another opportunity to work with. Have you seen "Rust & Bone"?

MTV: Yes. Marion Cotillard is amazing in it.

Hemsworth: Oh my God. I think it's one of my favorite movies ever. I was just blown away by that film. I loved the truth and honesty about it. It was raw.

MTV: How is "Thor" going this time around?

Hemsworth: We have six weeks to go to shoot. This is the trickiest bit, because you can go, "Oh, yeah, we're past the halfway mark!" which isn't a good idea, because you're not finished yet. You sort of get that second wind about now or you hope to and push on through. But it's been great. The look of the film is a lot bigger than what we did even previously. The first one worked and people loved it, but this is with a different director and just has a totally different feel. There's a definite "Game of Thrones" vibe thanks to [director] Alan [Taylor].

MTV: Have the relationships between Thor and Jane and Loki progressed significantly?

Hemsworth: Definitely. For Thor and Jane, there are some unanswered questions now, since obviously he didn't stop in and catch up with her in "Avengers." Thor might have some explaining to do in this one.

MTV: I hadn't thought of that. Is Jane bitter that her boyfriend didn't bother to say hi during all that craziness?

Hemsworth: [Laughs.] I know, right? Where the hell have you been? There's some fun to be had with that. And with Loki, we get down to the major bones of our conflict with everything that's come from "Thor" to "Avengers" to now.

MTV: Your next project is "Robopocalypse" with Steven Spielberg. I'd imagine that's hugely exciting for you.

Hemsworth: Yeah! No one does sci-fi better than him. It was a no-brainer. And then I read the script and was even more excited if that's possible.

MTV: Have you heard anything about a "Snow White" sequel or spin-off lately?

Hemsworth: Honestly, I've heard the same things you've heard. I think if there's an appetite for the sequel, they'll get one going, but there's nothing official yet. I had a great time making the last one, so who knows?

MTV: With all of these franchises, do you have room for one more? "Star Wars" is gearing up again!

Hemsworth: Oh man, I love those films. That's the sort of bread and butter of my film experience as a kid. I would love to work on something like that. I also loved "Lord of the Rings." I would have loved to have done something in that world.
