GoT season 2 Blu-ray/DVD release date and details!

Game of Thrones season 2 DVD date and extras revealed -- EXCLUSIVE
By JAMES HIBBERD

Want to know when Game of Thrones season two is coming out on DVD and Blu-ray and all the extras will it have?

Below are all the details, plus a behind-the-scenes clip on the creation of Thrones‘ giant Battle of the Blackwater explosion (and, for those who missed it, there’s also the season three date-tease video that aired on HBO last night). The second season of HBO’s acclaimed fantasy drama is expected to be a huge hit on home video since since Thrones’ first season ranks as the top-selling TV home video release this year and the network’s ratings for the second season were higher than the first.

Here’s the release date: Feb. 19, 2013. That’s for DVD, Blu-ray and digital download. That gives fans who didn’t watch the second season on HBO more than a month to catch up before season three debuts on March 31. Ten hours of Thrones in five weeks? Shouldn’t be a problem.

Here’s the official copy detailing the S2 extras:

Blu-ray with HBO Select – includes all DVD features plus:
War of the Five Kings – Track the claims, strategies and key players involved in the battle for the Iron Throne with this interactive guide that follows the movements of various armies detailing their victories and defeats.
Histories & Lore – 19 animated histories detailing the mythology of Westeros and Essos as told from the varying perspectives of the characters themselves and featuring, in-part, illustrations from Game of Thrones storyboard artist Will Simpson.
In-Episode Guide – In-feature resource that provides background information about on-screen characters, locations and relevant histories.
Hidden Dragon Eggs – Find the hidden dragon eggs to uncover even more never-before-seen content.

DVD:
Creating the Battle of Blackwater Bay – See how the epic Battle of Blackwater Bay was brought to life in this exclusive, in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at the climatic episode. The 30 minute feature showcases never-before-seen interviews with cast and crew.
Game of Thrones: Inner Circle – Actors Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Lena Headey, Michelle Fairley and Liam Cunningham talk in detail about their experiences shooting season two in this roundtable discussion moderated by executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
The Religions of Westeros (super excited for this) – Hear author George R.R. Martin, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss discuss the competing religions in the series and how they influence the various characters in Westeros and beyond.
Character Profiles – Profiles of seven major characters as described by the actors portraying them including Renly Baratheon, Stannis Baratheon, Robb Stark, Theon Greyjoy and more.
Audio Commentaries – 12 commentaries with cast and crew including David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, George R.R. Martin, Emilia Clarke, Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington and more.

COMMENTARIES!!!! Lena doing 'Blackwater' is going to be a m a z i n g. And the kids doing commentary on 'What is Dead May Never Die' aka the season's best is going to be perf (and it wouldn't surprise me if Cogman asked them to do that ep since he loves working with them/writing for them so much). Although, I'm sad there's no commentary with Gethin. :( Even though I thought this was a pretty flop season over all, I'll probably end up buying this just for the extras, tbh.

freeze_i_say 20th-Nov-2012 03:05 pm (UTC)
"Lena doing 'Blackwater' is going to be a m a z i n g"

is she even capable of doing anything without her awful eyebrow acting tho?
minderbinder 20th-Nov-2012 03:07 pm (UTC)
Ummm... what? She's doing the commentary for Blackwater, and considering her commentary on sesaon 1's dvd set is hilariously awesome, it's safe to say she is going to slay in this ep's commentary.

Also, Lena in Blackwater was free of flaws.
anchors_oceans 20th-Nov-2012 03:26 pm (UTC)
that was the episode that really made me sit up. i've always liked cersei but it was like lena was on another level in blackwater. loved her so much!
soavantgarde 20th-Nov-2012 03:10 pm (UTC)
Bye
donnanoble 20th-Nov-2012 03:12 pm (UTC)
I'll never understand it when people think using your eyebrows in acting is a bad thing.
katiefitch 20th-Nov-2012 03:25 pm (UTC)
lmfao k
haedria 20th-Nov-2012 03:42 pm (UTC)
wat
lathwen1 21st-Nov-2012 03:18 am (UTC)
I don't mind her eyebrows, but she has a "I'm smelling shit" face that does. lol
I don't think she's a good actress, but she was great in Blackwater. That episode belongs to her imo.
devochkazhenya 20th-Nov-2012 03:06 pm (UTC)
why isn't this coming out during Christmas time? HBO y u so silly?
minderbinder 20th-Nov-2012 03:09 pm (UTC)
Because HBO releasing some ~special edition~ version of the season 1 set, which is really dumb since anyone who wanted that probably already has it. And there really aren't any extras or anything like that, there's just a dragon egg paper weight lol.
devochkazhenya 20th-Nov-2012 03:12 pm (UTC)
thats so idiotic
kurtvonnegut 20th-Nov-2012 04:09 pm (UTC)
ikr when i was on amazon i was trying to figure out which version to get and i just kept looking through what was in it and didn't get why the super extra deluxe version was $30 more for a dragon paperweight.
bathstone 20th-Nov-2012 03:11 pm (UTC)
Dude, this!
soavantgarde 20th-Nov-2012 03:08 pm (UTC)
No gethin or Gwen :"(

I live for cast commentary tho, sole reason I bought the S1 DVDs tbh

Hopefully I'll have a blu ray player by the time these come out bc the DVD extras suck
anchors_oceans 20th-Nov-2012 03:12 pm (UTC)
was the commentary good? i'm so in love with shows/movies that have amazing cast commentaries.
soavantgarde 20th-Nov-2012 03:16 pm (UTC)
Yes I liked it a lot! Harry Lloyd is esp great, and Lena! :)
joaniemaloney 21st-Nov-2012 04:14 am (UTC)
they're really funny.
I loved the ones they had last year.
cerseilannister 20th-Nov-2012 03:20 pm (UTC)
No Gwen? Brienne was the best. Now I'm annoyed.
freeze_i_say 20th-Nov-2012 05:07 pm (UTC)
No Queen Gwen???? ugh
anolinde 20th-Nov-2012 03:10 pm (UTC)
I hate how Blu-rays always have that obnoxious as fuck blue strip at the top of the case. Like, every single time I've contemplated getting one, I've thought of the ugly-ass packaging and lost all interest. Why can't they ditch that thing?
minderbinder 20th-Nov-2012 03:12 pm (UTC)
It's not on the actual cover, it's just like a paper thingy on top, At least, on HBO's sets, Idk about actual movies and stuff.
anolinde 20th-Nov-2012 03:26 pm (UTC)
Is it really?? Holy shit, mind blown, lol.
sarafina126 20th-Nov-2012 03:51 pm (UTC)
Most movies are still stuck with them unfortunately.
hammersxstrings 20th-Nov-2012 03:11 pm (UTC)

Here goes my money
soavantgarde 20th-Nov-2012 03:15 pm (UTC)
So why are the lands of ice and fire maps not being sold on amazon except used? We're these limited editions because if so I'm going to be so pissed, I didn't buy them bc my dad wanted to get them for me for Christmas...
minderbinder 20th-Nov-2012 03:17 pm (UTC)
Are you talking about this?
soavantgarde 20th-Nov-2012 05:22 pm (UTC)
Yes, bless
cerseilannister 20th-Nov-2012 03:16 pm (UTC)

I need those commentaries.
darkbloom 20th-Nov-2012 03:22 pm (UTC)

anitakkkat 20th-Nov-2012 03:36 pm (UTC)
Since I can't get it for Christmas, I guess I'll get it as a kind of late birthday present. I love that Maisie, Sophie and Isaac are doing the commentary together again, they were adorable in the last one.
anitakkkat 20th-Nov-2012 03:38 pm (UTC)
Also, Ep. 8 commentary would be perfect if they had Gwen too
soavantgarde 20th-Nov-2012 05:24 pm (UTC)
