Kelsey Grammer to Produce MTV YA Adaptation "Blackwood"

MTV buys mystery drama produced by Kelsey Grammer

“Blackwood” is from Lionsgate Television and Grammer’s Grammnet Prods. The program is based on a young adult book of that name by Gwenda Bond. “Blackwood” was published on the Strange Chemistry YA imprint of Angry Robot Books, a United Kingdom-based science fiction publisher.

Peter Calloway (“Brothers & Sisters”), a DC Comic book and television writer will pen the adaptation.

The story focuses on Miranda Blackwood, a 19-year-old who, after 114 people that include her father disappear off Roanoke Island, starts investigating. She teams with her high school sweetheart, but discovers she is at the center of the mystery, and also the disappearance of 114 people in America’s early days at The Lost Colony.

Grammer is best known for playing Dr. Frasier Crane on the TV shows “Cheers” and “Frasier.” He wil also appear in the upcoming film “Reach Me” alongside Kyra Sedgwick.

MTV may have been inspired by the success of its program “Teen Wolf.”

Calloway will exec produce along with Grammer, Stella Bulochnikov and Brian Sher from Grammnet. Brian Taylor, vice president of Gramnet, found the manuscript and got the rights for Grammnet and Lionsgate TV.

On Roanoke Island, the legend of the 114 people who mysteriously vanished from the Lost Colony hundreds of years ago is just an outdoor drama for the tourists, a story people tell. But when the island faces the sudden disappearance of 114 people now, an unlikely pair of 17-year-olds may be the only hope of bringing them back.

Miranda, a misfit girl from the island’s most infamous family, and Phillips, an exiled teen criminal who hears the voices of the dead, must dodge everyone from federal agents to long-dead alchemists as they work to uncover the secrets of the new Lost Colony. The one thing they can’t dodge is each other.

Is that cover for real? Please say no because I can't believe someone was paid to put that shit together.
xevochic 20th-Nov-2012 07:43 am (UTC)
Grrrrl Someone did that for free, lbr. There's just no way.
jason350 20th-Nov-2012 07:42 am (UTC)
Sounds cool for a show. Will probably go well with Teenwolf.
christini_smith 20th-Nov-2012 07:43 am (UTC)
I love the story of Roanoke, but this just sounds terrible. And let's be real here everyone thought they disappeared but the colonists at Roanoke were abandoned without supplies and ended up integrating with the native communities who would take whoever was left after starvation and war with the natives communities the colonists pissed off.

That's my favorite version of what happened.
christini_smith 20th-Nov-2012 09:28 am (UTC)
It's my favorite too, certainly the most plausible. Though if John White had only braved a little storm he might have found more clues on that island.
popartpistol 20th-Nov-2012 07:45 am (UTC)
Shut up, Kelsey Grammer.

"Phillips, an exiled teen criminal who hears the voices of the dead"

really tho
sereniti_ii 20th-Nov-2012 08:22 am (UTC)
This is very odd to me. Exiled to where, exactly? Do they just drive a ferry off Manhattan and then drop him when it gets deep enough?
gee 20th-Nov-2012 08:27 am (UTC)
Maybe he has to stay inside a human sized hamster pall. That way he can ~never be a part of normal society.
sereniti_ii 20th-Nov-2012 08:32 am (UTC)
Or they have him suspended in a special ¬sky ship¬ just to emphasize his bad boy status and he just sits in his mini-craft and broods.
It's better than brooding in the trees.
xevochic 20th-Nov-2012 08:33 am (UTC)
He apparently exiles himself to a school in another city, and is brought back when he cop dad thinks he will be useful in solving the mystery. Yeah.
sereniti_ii 20th-Nov-2012 08:34 am (UTC)
SHHHH that's so awful. Leave me to my interesting theories.
xevochic 20th-Nov-2012 08:44 am (UTC)
lolol Your theories are definitely better.

Every summary I read for this book sounds boring as fuck.

Miranda is the "geeky outsider" version of the typical special snowflake. Phillips with an s for some reasonGary Stu is an apathetic special snowflake, genius, and annoying rebel. The two knew each other as children and Miranda's Severus Snape moment was Gary calling her a freak in front of zomg everyone. She promptly gets over this Life Changing Event™ after the two meet again, so you know they're gonna bone.

The two snowflakes solve a mystery with quips, magic, and the genius's knowledge of literally everything ever, because that's how intelligence works, right guys? No research ever involved. You know know stuff because stuff is knowable? That must be right since every "genius" in every medium does it. Meanwhile, the FBI is full of idiots who can't do their job and our outsmarted by teenagers.

Hopefully the show's version will be better.
sereniti_ii 20th-Nov-2012 08:33 am (UTC)
LOL I love your synopsis. TY bb.

Made any progress in Angelfall?
xevochic 20th-Nov-2012 08:42 am (UTC)
Blergh! You commented right as I was about to edit my stupid grammatical errors. haha

No, wait, I lied. This is the one that was online. haha Sorry, I confused it with another book that someone just rec'd to me. Yeah, I totally forgot about Angelfall. I have it bookmarked though. Thanks for reminding me. I need to add it to my reading list so I don't forget again. XD

LMAO.
xevochic 20th-Nov-2012 03:41 pm (UTC)
Are you laughing at the ~irony~ of my typo, Thesaurus Rex?
theratwhispers 20th-Nov-2012 03:43 pm (UTC)
It's early in for me, so I think I am giggling at the entire thing. But I totally get your point. I'm dying at the idea of FBI agents being outsmarted by 17 year olds.
xevochic 20th-Nov-2012 03:45 pm (UTC)
haha Well I'm glad you enjoyed it! :D
inferiarecoming 20th-Nov-2012 09:01 am (UTC)

sounds like he wants to jump on the YA movie bandwagon and rake in the money.
preciosatt 20th-Nov-2012 02:32 pm (UTC)
Kelsey Grammer is a douche of epic proportions and yet I still have to thank him for investing in black sitcoms when the CW was ready to let them all die.
theratwhispers 20th-Nov-2012 03:11 pm (UTC)
Miranda, a misfit girl from the island’s most infamous family, and Phillips, an exiled teen criminal who hears the voices of the dead, must dodge everyone from federal agents to long-dead alchemists as they work to uncover the secrets of the new Lost Colony.

This sounds like something a 13 year old would love. Phillips though? Are there more than one of him? Only a tween/teen would even remotely buy this horrid sounding plot.
summerviolets 20th-Nov-2012 03:42 pm (UTC)
I got given this book to review and... yeah, it was awful.
squirrels_oh_no 20th-Nov-2012 03:46 pm (UTC)
I had a review copy, read like five pages, and told the publicist, "Nope."
summerviolets 20th-Nov-2012 03:55 pm (UTC)
Good choice. I got ten pages in before I started skimming it so I had something to write about.
squirrels_oh_no 20th-Nov-2012 03:56 pm (UTC)
I mean, there are 100 better paranormal books MTV could have picked up besides this one. Seriously.
cherisheddreams 20th-Nov-2012 04:01 pm (UTC)
Greer is the only Grammer that I want on MTV, thanks though! But exceptions can be made for Spencer
