The characters aren't exactly ruined for me. I think the writers are being pretty honest and realistic with how they are making the characters behave and their story lines play out. Literally every decision they've made so far has led them to this point in the story, and thats just fantastic story telling.
I'm waiting to see if they'll come out on top or if Sutter had this depressing mess planned from the beginning and will keep it going until the finale.
