Benedict Cumberbatch: Likes his Watson? I Guess? This is a stupid article.

Benedict Cumberbatch wants to keep his Watson male
Unlike Jonny Lee Miller, Benedict Cumberbatch wants his Watson to remain a man

There is an all-male Twelfth Night in the West End, and an all-female Julius Caesar opening later this month, but Benedict Cumberbatch has no intention of following Jonny Lee Miller’s example and working with a female Dr Watson as his pal did in the series Elementary.

“After working with with Martin [Freeman], I could never imagine Watson being a woman,” the Sherlock star assures me at a party to celebrate Spencer Hart’s 10th anniversary at the Brompton Club . “Martin is established as Watson.

“I have seen the pilot and one other episode of Elementary – I think it’s great. It works with Lucy playing Watson and she's a good actress, but I don’t think you could do that here with Sherlock.”

Elementary, the US adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective series, sees Miller take the lead role while Dr Watson, who is conventionally a man, is portrayed by the former Charlie’s Angels actress, Lucy Liu.

“It’s not that I think it doesn’t work in the States, it’s just Martin has been established as Watson and you can’t change that.”

THE SOURCE

Obviously, obviously we couldn't switch out Martin Freeman for an actress and pretend nothing happened and I don't understand what the point of this article is, except as a way to somehow make it seem like Benedict thinks girl-Watson is a bad idea, which just...isn't saying at all. I'm waiting for it to get spun that way though.

This.
Sherlock vs Elementary is the new Britney vs Christina. Blown way out of proportion by crazy stans (+ Moffat) and completely pointless.

I don't get it at all. Nobody seems to give a fuq about comparing either of them with the Guy Ritchie movies.

I do understand the initial anger over the fact that they went ahead with the project even though they didn't have Steven Moffat's blessed approval, but at the end of the day, they didn't need it.

You can enjoy both or either. My enjoyment of Sherlock isn't somehow dampened by the existence of Elementary.

Yeah, it's a pain in the ass. I'm enjoying the hell out of Elementary so far. And I'm perfectly aware of the shitty aspects of Sherlock, but I still love it. I don't need people from either side to constantly scream their hate at me, or keep pointing out why one of them is oh mah gaaawd like sooo much better than the other one because of this and that and blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda.
I wish people would stop trying to make this "feud" happen. And this is coming from a Sherlock fan who was kinda "ugh what?" when Elementary was first announced.
