Paul McCartney: “If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian.”

jiveassturkey

Paul McCartney has delivered an anti-turkey Christmas message, telling people to go vegetarian this festive season.

The former Beatle appears in animal rights charity PETA's new Christmas advertising campaign, wearing an 'eat no turkey' t-shirt beneath the slogan, "celebrate life this holiday season, go vegetarian."

McCartney has also recorded a voiceover for the group's latest campaign video about the meat industry titled 'Glass Walls' after McCartney's quote, "If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian."

Speaking about what the McCartney household eats over Christmas, he says: "We eat a veggie roast at home, so if we have traditional moments like Christmas … the roast is perfect. It's completely vegetarian, but I can slice it, so I can do all my traditional dad things. We can do our family stuff with it, and it's delicious, so I much prefer that to my memory of turkey."

Paul McCartney is the latest musician to join PETA's campaign to promote animal rights. Joss Stone appeared naked in an anti-fur campaign.

I got this weird train of thought after looking at that poster. what if we all woke up in the morning and decided we never wanted to eat meat again. farmers would go bankrupt, farm animals will be mo more needed and they would disappear and be only at the zoo or whatever, 'cause who would have them and breed them just so they woud be there?
or we're such elitist we only say 'no' to turkey?
lespapillons 17th-Nov-2012 09:14 pm (UTC)
There would still be dairy farms. And the huge amount of cows that are raised for meat produce tons of methane, a greenhouse gas that eats away at our ozone.
fever 17th-Nov-2012 09:22 pm (UTC)
what if we go with vegan logic of not eating anything animal? like eggs, milk, etc.
ediesedgwick 17th-Nov-2012 09:31 pm (UTC)
The earth would be more efficient in feeding people, there would be less pollution, and we could stop driving other species extinct by turning their ecosystems into pasture for cattle.
yourscenesucks 17th-Nov-2012 09:47 pm (UTC)
If you eliminated factory farms (where the majority of our meat comes from) the average rural farmer would THRIVE. Their land usually is taken up by food grown to feed the huge wasteful surplus of animals who have been bred for our meat. There would be more real food for everyone, less cancer and heart disease, and less pollution.

Stuffing and carrots. My mother-in-law makes amazing stuffing with Texas Toast, butter, onions, and celery. It's so moist and delicious. And my husband's aunt makes carrots with onions and bacon that are also amazingly delicious.

God, I can't wait til Thursday.

Mac and cheese from scratch. The only way I like mac and cheese tbh because I can't with that box stuff. More power to people who love it, but I'm not here for that.

STUFFING.

And every year my family got together we would have to triple the recipe because we all love it.

At my In-laws, they just make a normal amount and I end up with all of it because they are not to big on it. They really only make it because its "tradition."

i am in love with homemade mashed potatoes (we always have chicken gravy even though there is no chicken in sight) and Stouffer's Turkey Stuffing (i could literally eat three boxes in one sitting).

sometimes i make corn that's been boiled in chicken broth and that's fucking awesome. the day after thanksgiving i make turkey sandwiches with mashed potatoes and stuffing on top of the turkey.
lickety_split Re: Favorite Thanksgiving dishes, fatties? 18th-Nov-2012 08:08 am (UTC)
Oyster and mushroom stuffing?

Might have to try that.
xathenex Re: Favorite Thanksgiving dishes, fatties? 18th-Nov-2012 11:23 am (UTC)
Cornbread stuffing with sausage, thyme, and rosemary by faaar. I had regular bread stuffing at a thanksgiving party yesterday and it was naaaaasty. But everyone else loved it. Cornbread stuffing, or gtfo.

Other than that, I will throw down on some homemade mac and cheese and green bean casserole.

I'm a stuffing (although probably not anymore), mashed potatoes, and rolls whore. Idrc about anything else.

saray677 17th-Nov-2012 09:10 pm (UTC)
I love him sfm, he was the only reason I watched a horrible slaughterhouse video 3 years ago (I always avoided it) and I haven't touched meat since then.
anus 17th-Nov-2012 09:12 pm (UTC)
I'm amazed that those videos actually affect people enough to stop eating me. Seeing it doesn't make me any more of aware of the shit they do at slaughterhouses.
saray677 17th-Nov-2012 09:27 pm (UTC)
I was aware of what's going on before but after seeing a full 10 minute video alone I knew I couldn't look at bacon without seeing little pigs bleeding to death on top of each other.
laceleather 17th-Nov-2012 09:45 pm (UTC)
Because that disconnect has no justification, only an explanation that is willful ignorance. When I ate meat I knew what happened at slaughterhouses, but to finally make that connection between the two changed my moral structure and the way i related things.
antique_faery 20th-Nov-2012 05:23 pm (UTC)
It's easier to push it out of your mind if you don't actually see it and just hear/read about it. I've always known, but after a while I realized I didn't want to do it anymore because it finally sunk in.
hollis1975 17th-Nov-2012 09:10 pm (UTC)
every fucking year we hear this crap.
cerseilannister 17th-Nov-2012 09:10 pm (UTC)
I've thought about going veg, but I'm weak willed, what can I say? Maybe one day.
I appreciate what Paul and others are trying to do by spreading awareness. Ofc, there's a lot of constraints like money that a lot of ppl would face in trying to adapt to such a choice, so I kind of rme at someone so wealthy as Paul even tho I get they're not coming from a bad place.
I grew up spending a bunch time on ranches and I nvr felt bad about the animals that were killed for food, but they weren't cooped up and treated the way animals are treated in factory farms tho.
lespapillons 17th-Nov-2012 09:10 pm (UTC)
lol no. I'm a vegan, but come on Paul...people in poverty can't afford tofurky and chik'n patties. And most people who could afford to not eat meat still wouldn't care because their appetite and sense of entitlement are more important to them than farm animal cruelty.
maryjanewatson 17th-Nov-2012 09:10 pm (UTC)
so sad we don't have thanksgiving here and only get to eat turkey on christmas.
vonlisbon 17th-Nov-2012 09:10 pm (UTC)
His shirt is true tho. The thing is that people

DO

NOT

GIVE

A

FUCK

They couldn't care fucking less about the fact that people who own Butterball farms make on average like $19k. They couldn't fucking care less. It is SO FAR from being purely a health issue and entirely about local economics. These cities are BEHOLDEN to Butterball and what the fuck are they going to say if they misstep a little guideline????
ediesedgwick 17th-Nov-2012 09:35 pm (UTC)
Yeah the factory farm system really disgusts me. Eating meat has become a global economic and human rights issue and it's gross that populations that actually use their natural resources responsibly are getting fucked over because western countries want to consume massive portions of meat and fish and don't care who has to suffer to make that happen

Edited at 2012-11-17 09:37 pm (UTC)
chimbleysweep 17th-Nov-2012 10:01 pm (UTC)
It always surprises me how many people do not buy local meat (aside from those who really just cannot afford that). I wouldn't want a Butterball anything.
vonlisbon 18th-Nov-2012 03:06 pm (UTC)
I haaave to assume the people who choose to not eat local meat (as in, they have the option readily available) have simply never had non-factory meat before. It's like choosing some stale Merita over a fresh loaf of homemade bread.
sierracore 17th-Nov-2012 09:11 pm (UTC)
nope

foureyedgirl 17th-Nov-2012 09:11 pm (UTC)
IA. I eat meat mostly out of convenience. Grew up around family that would kill/skin/butcher animals like goats for holidays and I had to run away and stay away. The sounds and smell of it all made me sick. I could never deal with that.
schexyschteve 17th-Nov-2012 09:13 pm (UTC)
Is this like the time Morgan Spurlock's Super Size Me documentary was supposed to turn people off of eating McDonald's? Because it just made me want McDonald's more.
spillvegas 17th-Nov-2012 09:23 pm (UTC)
everytime i watch that doc i want mcdonalds goddamn
i don't even like mcdonalds. if i'm going for fast food i like taco bell or panda express.
vivisexion 17th-Nov-2012 09:52 pm (UTC)
we watched that documentary in middle school health class and it made me so damn hungry
pikapika217 17th-Nov-2012 09:58 pm (UTC)
I'm more mad at the doc taking super size away. I mean - it's not the company's fault if consumers don't have enough sense/judgement to know to NOT do something all the time. Why are we making the institutions pay instead of educating people to make better decisions?!
tucker 18th-Nov-2012 02:05 am (UTC)
lol ikr

everyone was like "ew I'm never eating fast food again" and I just realllly wanted mcdonalds

He looks kind of Photoshopped.
cimarosa 17th-Nov-2012 09:13 pm (UTC)
Chicken and turkey are too damn delicious for me to give a good goddamn how they got on my plate. Push comes to shove I'll kill those suckers myself, but who has time for that shit these days?
