Cesar Millan Reveals Suicide Attempt Following Dog's Death and Divorce

Photobucket

Cesar Millan has a new show and is feeling like a top dog again—but two years ago he had given up on life.

An upcoming Nat Geo Wild documentary reveals that the Dog Whisperer star attempted suicide in 2010 following the death of his beloved pit bull, Daddy, and the breakup of his 16-year marriage.

"It was hard, because I wasn't expecting it," he says of the divorce from wife Ilusion, with whom he has two sons. "I went into a big depression. I lost a lot of weight. And I felt that I lost the most important thing, which was my family."

After surviving an overdose later that year, Millan says in the special, airing Nov. 25, that he eschewed medication and regained control of his life through exercise and work.

He also has a new love in his life, Jahira Dar, and is thinking about proposing—but he has to ask her parents first.

"I know they are going to say yes, but I like the whole Cinderella story," he says.

"I think my life has everything, you know, it has comedy has drama has action," Millan says. "I don't know about the ending yet. I'm just glad I can tell the story. Hopefully people get inspired, they get motivated. It doesn't matter where you come from. Really what I would like for people to get out of this is just to not lose hope, no matter what happens. You should never lose hope."

Next up, Leader of the Pack, which filmed in Spain, premieres on Nat Geo Wild in January.

demikkusuu 16th-Nov-2012 03:50 am (UTC)
same here )^: kept replaying it over and over in my head (worse still was watching her suffer afterwards... we ended up putting her down. ugh fuck)

solidarity, bb
itsafunny_thing 16th-Nov-2012 04:45 am (UTC)
Aw bb :( I hope you find a way to deal with it/find peace with it. When I was 8, my dog was attacked out of nowhere by my neighbor's much bigger Rottweiler. Like... guts hanging out and everything. She survived, which was pretty fucking miraculous, but seeing it happen right in front of me fucked me up. I think I blocked a lot of it out so that I could move on.
ghostdrive 16th-Nov-2012 06:51 am (UTC)
omg D: This is like my worst nightmare with my pets tbh. So glad your dog survived that.

When my cat died I was devastated. It was fucking horrible. I felt like shit because he drank some motor fluid or something and suffered a lot in the last months of his life. The night that he died he hid under my parent's bed, entered in a coma, convulsed and died. Worst New Years ever. Seriously, he died exactly at 12. I miss him so much. :(
heartlockedx 16th-Nov-2012 03:32 am (UTC)

This just reminds me that the year anniversary of losing my Thomasina is in a week.

My poor beautiful baby. She was almost 17 years old (had her since I was 7) when she we had to put her down.

Leaving this post before I start crying,
alanadelrey 16th-Nov-2012 03:14 am (UTC)
If I even start to think about my dog dying I start to cry.
shortliljackers 16th-Nov-2012 03:22 am (UTC)
me too...like full on ugly sobbing. unfortunately, it happens more often than i'd like to admit :(
juel1979 17th-Nov-2012 12:33 am (UTC)
Don't feel alone. I have the possibility hit me every so often and lose it for a while. I hope freakouts like that may help make it easier when it does happen. =(
noon 16th-Nov-2012 03:15 am (UTC)
omg everyone in here is talking about how they dread their pet's death and i feel sociopathic or smth b/c i can't imagine that feeling, even as a someone who owned a dog for years

i'd be sad but w/e, gotta keep it pumpin'
licorrice 16th-Nov-2012 03:23 am (UTC)
that's sad tbh, nothing against you personally but i've never ended up trusting/liking someone who wasn't close to animals. and anyone who says they don't like animals at all is a serial killer imo.
noon 16th-Nov-2012 03:28 am (UTC)
meh, i prefer humans ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
squishinator 16th-Nov-2012 03:15 am (UTC)
do any of you watch that show "too cute" on animal planet?

Like its so basic but i'll sit there and "AWWWWWWW" all over the place for hours.
pamuya 16th-Nov-2012 03:19 am (UTC)
YES

it is THE BEST SHOW

reginald is the best kitten imo
chewmi 16th-Nov-2012 03:21 am (UTC)
it's one of my favorite shows lol
shortliljackers 16th-Nov-2012 03:23 am (UTC)
i fuckin love that show. my dog is all about the cat episodes.
pamuya 16th-Nov-2012 03:26 am (UTC)
my dog loves the cats too. she couldnt give a fuck about the puppies but if she hears a cat she goes batshit!
vacationsays 16th-Nov-2012 03:34 am (UTC)
Oh god. One horrible weekend I was PMSing and really sick in bed and I ended up watching Too Cute and sobbing at a combination of how cute the cats were and how much I miss my cats. I was a mess.
vivisexion 16th-Nov-2012 03:17 am (UTC)
i don't even know what i'm gonna do when my yorkie dies tbh
gpin2084 16th-Nov-2012 03:19 am (UTC)
Aw, Daddy was the sweetest dog. I loved seeing him and Junior together.

I'm going through the trials of house training my 4 month old puppy, who is currently snoring beside me. Still love the little bugger tho. He's the sweetest grump ever, s'why I named him Charlie Brooker.

mankini 16th-Nov-2012 03:20 am (UTC)
What an expressive face.
pamuya 16th-Nov-2012 03:24 am (UTC)

estasi 16th-Nov-2012 04:51 am (UTC)
Omg, so cute!
voyevoda 16th-Nov-2012 03:20 am (UTC)
My puppers is 9, and cataracts are juuust starting to form in her eyes and her hair is just starting to go slightly grey, but it kills me because she's my bb girl. :( I hope she can keep going for several more years to go, I'm not ready to lose her yet.

Lost my first bunny after two years of frequent vet appointments- she was blind from day one, severe glaucoma -and that killed me for months afterward, took me a few years to get to a point where I could see her photo and have her urn visible.
cosnicgirl 16th-Nov-2012 03:20 am (UTC)
I thought I would be suicidal when my dog died but I realized that he was in pain. He spent most of his time sleeping. I guess I figured that he wouldn't be hurting anymore even though it's awful without him.
licorrice 16th-Nov-2012 03:21 am (UTC)
that's really sad, glad he didn't go through with it

i've read studies that show losing a pet can be just as grievous as losing a human family member, and i completely get that
pamuya 16th-Nov-2012 03:23 am (UTC)
it can

ot but i had a dog named licorice. someone shot him fml
licorrice 16th-Nov-2012 03:24 am (UTC)
omg i'm so sorry :(

i lost my dog of 16 years in 2008, my mom and i still shed a tear when we talk about her together
squishinator 16th-Nov-2012 03:29 am (UTC)
omg WTF! Thats horrible, I'm so sorry

I have a (maybe) irrational fear that some fucked up person will hear our dogs barking and come by and kill them or something. I know thats a little crazy but it could happen and it scares me. If someone EVER hurt one of my pets I think I would be capable of severely fucking their world up.
mari_lyn00 17th-Nov-2012 12:31 pm (UTC)
the day my dog died was legit the saddest day of my life.
vonlisbon 16th-Nov-2012 03:24 am (UTC)
but he has to ask her parents first. "I know they are going to say yes, but I like the whole Cinderella story," he says.

w8 Cinderella's dad died and her stepmom didn't want her anywhere near a husband. wut.

On a serious note though this is great to hear. I wondered what happened to him.
oblika_farika 16th-Nov-2012 03:25 am (UTC)
:(
spider_orchid 16th-Nov-2012 03:26 am (UTC)
If I got suicidal everytime one of my pets died I would have been dead by the time I was like 12. We always had an old stray that took up at our house. He took care of it, fed it and loved it and whether it lived three months or 3 years we just wanted it to be loved while it was there... Idk, I can't related to this. Its just a part of life to me.
20727 16th-Nov-2012 05:37 am (UTC)
that's really weird tbh
spider_orchid 16th-Nov-2012 05:55 am (UTC)
I don't think its weird. People deal with death in different ways. When my pets died I was sad, but I was also happy that they got loved and fed and had a good life before they went. Same thing for people. A lot of them (animals and people) don't get that.
shortliljackers 16th-Nov-2012 03:28 am (UTC)
i love my bbs. wish they could live forever. they are littermates and the best of friends...i think when one goes the other will go soon after from a broken heart. i've heard of that happening.

mankini 16th-Nov-2012 03:31 am (UTC)
That does happen, unfortunately. I lost a dog almost two years ago, Nov. 26, 2010, and the other died on April 29, 2011. I feel like Bruno couldn't go on without Alex, or maybe Alex needed him wherever they go after they die.

Your babies are adorable, I love those big brown eyes.
squishinator 16th-Nov-2012 03:37 am (UTC)
right now, my dog is staying at my parents bc i moved home for a while, and then moved into an apartment that i couldnt have a dog. so she's had over 2 years to bond with my parents dogs and now i fear if i get a place i can have dogs, it'll be mean of me to take her back. I mean i love my dog and want her around but i also want what is best for her and i dont want her to be sad.
heartlockedx 16th-Nov-2012 03:35 am (UTC)
omg they're so cuuuuuuuuuuuute
look at those little faces omg omg
pamuya 16th-Nov-2012 03:38 am (UTC)
that happened after my dog licorice died. my golden, sunshine, followed very soon after :(

your babies are so pretty!
