Lotus is a flop. Why isn't Christina Aguilera selling more albums?

Xtine

The release of her new album Lotus was supposed to be a glorious victory lap for Christina Aguilera. After the dual duds of 2010′s critical and commercial failures Bionic and Burlesque, the once-platinum-plated pop star set out to reinvent herself: She divorced her husband of five years, became a coach on the hit series The Voice, and recommitted herself to her music.

Only part of that plan seems to be working for her. While her visibility factor is way up thanks to the big ratings for The Voice, it’s still bad news at the cash register. Final numbers won’t be in until next week, but right now, album sales tracking service Hits Daily Double is currently projecting Lotus will sell somewhere between 75 and 80 thousand copies in its opening week.

I'm not cocky, I just love myselfCollapse )

I forsee her having an "Emancipation of Mimi"-esque comeback in the next 3-5 years, but at least for the moment, her music career is done.

IMO, all Christina ever had going for her was some pretty impressive vocals. Her songs were catchy but never fantastic and she always came across as way too full of herself and with her, unlike other pop stars it came off as pretentious and not ~edgy~

It was only a matter of time before she stopped being even remotely relevant.

I really like Lotus. I wish I could understand the hate.
cluelessraf 15th-Nov-2012 09:45 pm (UTC)
Same here. I like it better than Bionic. Let's be real if this did better than Bionic people's opinions would totally shift though!
yummyhead2toe 15th-Nov-2012 09:52 pm (UTC)
Not hating, just not drawn to any of the songs besides "Your Body". The album is just - meh.

There were more songs that I liked on Bionic: Not Myself Tonight, Vanity, Desnudate, & WooHoo.

same i luv it, it's a great pop album and probs that best album from a major label pop star in the past 2 years, not even fronting
lizzka 15th-Nov-2012 09:43 pm (UTC)
see i want to like christina but she is.....really unlikable. it's not about confidence, because you can be confident but not an asshole. she seems to have no self-awareness or sense of humor about herself anymore and her attitude is generally off-putting. and her personal taste level (re: style )is also really suspect and i think that's also reflected in her music lately. like...i dunno how to explain it, she's always been tacky as fuck but in like the stripped era it at least seemed genuine? her music felt honest and even though she looked a mess, it still felt authentic..as in she meant it. now it just feels like she's trying too hard.

why do i even care? it's not like i own a single album or song of hers! haha. i dunno, i just have always rooted for her i guess.
ediesedgwick 15th-Nov-2012 09:53 pm (UTC)
ia. She styles herself and acts like someone in their late teens or early 20s and it is nagl
notthatinnocent 15th-Nov-2012 09:59 pm (UTC)
I always think of the interview that Linda Perry gave where she said "When people say they don't give a fuck? They normally do. But when Christina says it? She REALLY means she doesn't give a fuck."

And that's the difference. You have pop stars that give that air, but they really do care and appeal to the masses. Even Pink knows that and puts 3-4 radio friendly tracks on her album SPECIFICALLY to please her label - and she's admitted that. Christina won't do that - and she's punished by not getting the best songs or the best promo. It sucks, but that's how it goes.
genbu_no_miko24 15th-Nov-2012 10:58 pm (UTC)
I supported her in the beginning when she debuted, and sometime around the stripped area she kinda annoying to me because she really was snarky and un-likeable. I like her songs ngl, but her personality can be off-putting.

"it's not about confidence, because you can be confident but not an asshole.

I agree.
megisthesex 15th-Nov-2012 11:32 pm (UTC)
this comment perfectly sums up how i feel about her, esp in regards to the "stripped" era, i loved her then
celtic_thistle 16th-Nov-2012 12:37 am (UTC)
This is why I cannot and will never like her.
cityxpretty 15th-Nov-2012 09:43 pm (UTC)
I downloaded about half the album. I just can't get into the rest of it, but it might be good driving music, if you know what I mean.

I'm sure she could still keep putting out albums for as long as she wants. Who really cares if she "flops" on the charts.
christoph 15th-Nov-2012 09:46 pm (UTC)
eh no one expected it to do well. If it weren't for ONTD i wouldn't even know this album exists.
kenzainfluenza 15th-Nov-2012 09:46 pm (UTC)
its because shes lazy as fuck and doesnt wanna promote her music.... rihanna is on a goddamn 7 day 7 country tour tryin to promote unapologetic and this bitch cant be bothered to do some interviews.
the_wolski 15th-Nov-2012 10:18 pm (UTC)
this

ri WORKS
withoutyoursmil 15th-Nov-2012 10:49 pm (UTC)
she really does. i might not love her music or anything, but i gotta respect her hustle.
boweeko 15th-Nov-2012 09:46 pm (UTC)
I feel bad that she flops but then she doesn't really seem to care of put any effort into promoting her shit. Also her management team is so bad at picking singles so that doesn't help either.
laurie_springs 15th-Nov-2012 09:47 pm (UTC)
She's not meant to be a pop star. Perhaps she should dye her hair to make her entire braindead label understand that since the gaining weight thing didn't work.
love_keiko 15th-Nov-2012 09:48 pm (UTC)
i listened to the album and it's so sad. there are maybe 3 solid tracks? most of it just feels like a throwaway reject song or something. and just LISTENING to her just..irked me? there is this AIRINESS to the strength in her voice that she had on stripped that returned with more force on B2B that just COMPLETELY disappeared with this album. it's like she didn't give a damn and just threw tracks together for shits and giggles. i was never a hardcore fan but i did enjoy her music i'm legit disappointed in this release.

and was she always this fuckin' obnoxious or did this shit happen over night?
cityxpretty 15th-Nov-2012 09:53 pm (UTC)
She's always been kinda obnoxious, but sometimes she's sweet. I get what you're saying with the airiness. It's what makes her songs easier to listen to.
vehiclesshockme 15th-Nov-2012 09:51 pm (UTC)
I pretty much expected this which is sad because I really like the album. :(
xtoki_dokix 15th-Nov-2012 09:52 pm (UTC)
"What's stopping people from buying this album?"

Ah, I don't know, but my guess is that it's got something to do with that screaming thing she does. And she does it on nearly ever track. Just screaming. Not singing. Screaming. And I don't know about you, but I only feel that people should scream over emergencys, for boot camp, or ice cream. Anything else is just noise that hurts my ears.

Better luck next album!
mysticlady3 15th-Nov-2012 11:34 pm (UTC)
LOL ice cream.
thishollywood 15th-Nov-2012 09:53 pm (UTC)
i bet if she did a collab w/ flo rida, even THAT wuld bomb

& he never NOT has hits!!!!!
hewontgo 15th-Nov-2012 10:45 pm (UTC)
all his songs are awful
thishollywood 15th-Nov-2012 11:12 pm (UTC)
no they aint
licorrice 16th-Nov-2012 04:12 am (UTC)
flo rida is the one man version of the black eyed peas

he makes pure radio fodder, with nothing of substance or style

none of his songs will ever be considered classics, and i guarantee no more than one of them will be remembered five or ten years from now
fiercenessness 15th-Nov-2012 09:53 pm (UTC)
She needs to be dropped by her label. They aren't giving her what she needs as an artist and she's obviously become too complacent and needs a wake-up call. She has it in her to be great again.
valueablejunk 15th-Nov-2012 09:53 pm (UTC)
To me it's a real shame that someone like Chris Brown can do what he did and still sell.

Christina's past successes worked bc non-stans/casual fans liked it and bought her albums. She doesn't have that same strong huge fanbase like britney (whose stans proclaim they will proudly buy an album of her breathing just to get her #1) or fan bases that will blindly support anything. I remember my co-worker was so obsessed with her but he hated NMT, so he refused to buy Bionic.

She needs to get her ass out and promote to the masses and listen to some handlers. Post B2B, she's been visually daunting.
Let's be honest, the album isn't any worse than BTW or Femme Fatale.
That said, I loved like 5 songs off of it!

I think it's a mixture of things. She was huge in the TRL days because of the platform she had - they used to dedicated a WEEK to new albums, specials galore, plus she was apart of that era. She made the mistake with not realizing the change. She no longer has that platform, being on The Voice isn't enough. Other singers move quicker and are much more involved in social media. On top of that, her lead in single wasn't the best choice - and if it's true that Make the World Move is her second single, I'm convinced she's trying to fail. Cease Fire, Circles and Let There Be Love are radio worthy, yet I DOUBT she'll release any of those. Just poor planning and too hectic of a sound on her album. She needs to sit back, do a Kelly Clarkson - release a radio friendly album after a fail (even if a select few enjoyed it), get BETTER songs, get a better publicist/manager and then give her own sound a go again. She has to earn that right.
jigglemypuff 15th-Nov-2012 09:56 pm (UTC)
I think the problem has been all along that she doesn't want to do radio friendly stuff and her management doesn't care. Just like they don't care if she promotes.
valueablejunk 15th-Nov-2012 09:57 pm (UTC)
exactly, post TRL the music scene has drastically changed. Now the casual fans don't know she has a new song/album.

She needs an image makeover (stylists, makeup artists) and rethink her record team, bc everyone loved YB (but no one heard it or wanted to support it).
erised_mirror 16th-Nov-2012 12:35 am (UTC)
make the world move seriously sounded like one of those 90's songs all about unity and being nice to each other and shit. I sound like a bitch, but that was the worst part of the nineties and I hate those type of songs. Cease Fire is amazing and shoulg be her next single. But oh well.
licorrice 16th-Nov-2012 04:13 am (UTC)
i love the last sentence...she does have to earn it, but she thinks she already has, and therein lies her entire problem
