'Star Wars 7' director search down to 'a couple of candidates'

The Star Wars: Episode VII director search has been whittled down to "a couple of candidates", according to producer Frank Marshall.

Last month (October 31), Disney announced plans to make a new series of Star Wars films after buying Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion (£2.5 billion), with Episode VII supposedly earmarked for release in 2015.

With George Lucas set to serve as "creative consultant" on the new movies but without playing an active role in their development, speculation as to who will helm the new trilogy of movies has been rife.

However, Marshall, whose wife Kathleen Kennedy is the president of Lucasfilm, has told MTV that he knows the inside scoop on the new Star Wars films and revealed that the director shortlist is now down to "a couple of candidiates".

He added: "But I can't reveal it, or I won't be alive tomorrow. I'm really excited about this. It's going to be one of the most anticipated blockbusters of all time. I can't wait to see what's next."

Marshall, who was producer all four Indiana Jones movies for Lucasfilm, also revealed that while 'Indy 5' is likely, it has been "put on the back burner" for the moment while the production company focuses its attention on new Star Wars films.

This week, it was announced that Toy Story 3's Michael Arndt has now been officially commissioned to script the first film.

An announcement on the Star Wars website read: "As pre-production of Star Wars: Episode VII begins, Lucasfilm has confirmed that award-winning writer Michael Arndt will write the screenplay for the new Star Wars film. As revealed in the ongoing video series posted here on StarWars.com, (Lucasfilm president) Kathleen Kennedy and George Lucas have begun story conferences with Arndt."

Arndt is a known Star Wars fan with an impressive CV. He won an Oscar in 2007 for his original screenplay to Little Miss Sunshine and went on to script 2010's Toy Story 3, which earned him another Oscar nomination. He has also co-written The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, due next year (2013).

Meanwhile, Star Wars: Episode VII has yet to lock in a director. X-Men helmer Matthew Vaughn is reportedly in talks for the job, while Steven Spielberg and JJ Abrams have publicly ruled themselves out.

The Mummy cast was perfect! I love that you mentioned it. I think the Mummy Returns was much better. But I agree, now I can't think of anyone for them, but it still irks me years later how badly they were miscast.

So true about the unknown aspect. I would love it if they did that, but we both know they're gonna need big names or at least somewhat famous ones. It's gonna be interesting to see how it goes.

Yes! I did think the Mummy returns was much better script wise, and yeah that cast was pretty much awesome. I know, I think that is one of the few things that make me dislike the films. I admit that Ewan was a good casting choice as was Christopher Lee, Samuel L. Jackson and Liam Neeson... perfect for me.

Everything else fell flat, which sucked because I,II, and III had a chance to be actually good films (I blame Lucas on that one for letting everything fall flat). I think that if they get the Solo Twins as Unknowns and factor in the kids in YJA as up and coming actors/actresses that get the 12-18, with the Secondary Actors as Older and More Established Character actors/actresses or those who have Clout, they will have a solid leg to stand on, but the cast HAS TO MESH Well with each other for it to work.

IA on everything you just said. FINALLY I found someone on here who gets it and understands haha. I feel like, if they're going to do this, they need to do it right and not half ass anything because this could potentially be a big hit, and it could be a really good movie.

They need to hire us to oversee all of this.

LOL, I think if he let a group of fans... be the test group, like a sensible amount of us, to be the overseers... I think we could do a damn good job. Consider how well I, II, and III went over, if they don't do this right, it is gonna suck and no one will be satisfied.

I half agree. I think Ewan, Liam, Chris Lee were definitely solid. To me, they show that no matter how much people complain about GL's dialogue and directing, good actors can make it work.

Which is why I don't blame GL for everything else. To me, what felt flat in those movies were scenes that depended on Hayden and Natalie. They sucked the life out of the room. Natalie looked bored. She has that habit in big-budget movies, looking like it's all so beneath her.

And Hayden just sucks. I think GL got too wrapped up in casting someone that looked like an older Jake Lloyd and assumed the actor wouldn't need a director to hold his hand. Maybe that was Nat's problem, too, cause she's been better in other things. GL just isn't that director. The fact that other actors got it done in spite of GL's hands-off approach just reminds me why those actors are recognized for being great and Hayden has faded into obscurity. (If only he'd dragged Nat with him before she signed up for another nerdy IP franchise.)

I feel bad for Hayden to be honest. He was good in Life as a House. IA about Natalie tho.

I admit, I didn't see it. I saw parts of Jumper and found him dull there, too. But maybe they both are simply actors that rely more on their director for their ~motivation and research.

I get where you're coming from.. and yeah, I think a major part of it was Hayden and Natalie, and it just didn't come across, but part of me still thinks that Lucas did what he could but it just didn't feel like a star wars movie, ya know?

Yea, I hear that. I know I'm one of the few fans (that are over 20 yrs old, anyway) that likes the PT overall. But I do love a chance to bash Hayden and Natalie. Watching Thor/Avenger fans wish she'd get replaced brings me back, with the same complaints I've had for a decade now... it gives me all the feels lol.

She didn't even wanna come back for Thor 2, which you knew was going to get a fucking sequel. And if she didn't than she's more of an idiot than I thought she was.
