Daredevil and Elektra happened before the Marvel started their new Cinematics Universe franchise with Iron Man in 2008 soon after which Disney bought out Marvel, pouring a ton of money into the franchise and helping to make it the massive success that it is today.
This is the opportune moment to use all the goodwill from the audience, all the hype generated by the successes of Iron Man, Captain America, Avengers etc... to make a movie that might not otherwise get made...or if it did, might not otherwise have the backing to help it succeed.
No, I agree. The Marvel movies have come a very long way since their beginnings. They definitely seem to be catering towards the male audience but they can't ignore the female fans forever and cast a strong, female lead movie. They seem to be the more rabid Marvel movie fans than men at least...
I'm always so torn up about this idea that casting a female lead for a movie is catering to female fans. I feel like that does a disservice both to the women who watch these movies and love this franchise purely because of love of story or sci-fi regardless of the genders of the leads, and to the men who love the franchise and would probably watch the movies regardless of the gender of the lead.
Maybe I'm crazy, but I really do think that the majority of fans in this case would be more drawn in, or conversely turned off, by a good story and great movie potential than by the gender of the lead.
But maybe I'm just being horrendously optimistic about people...which is not like me, but whatever.

They could totally write a killer movie based on her character if they weren't so in love with the male heroes, bromances,and Loki.
