Oscar posts are back - An Intro for the 2012 - 2013 Season

"I have met certain people whom I automatically would never vote for because I didn’t like the 30 seconds that I spent with them." He (director James Toback) refused to name names ("the list is too long"), but added, "Listen, anyone who says that the Oscars is not a popularity contest is lying through his teeth. People vote for their friends and they vote against the people they don’t like. I would almost say that one in ten voters that I’ve known over the years actually do it legitimately, if there is such a thing."

.
We’re getting a bit of a late start this year, but that’s ok – in the next few weeks, we’ll make up for lost time, getting everybody caught up on the campaigns, slander, underhanded Weinstein moves and general gossip going on during awards season.

The regular weekly posts, where we’ll put more of a focus on each of the main categories, will start tomorrow, and remain on Wednesdays until January 9th, the day before the Academy Award nominations are announced. Until then, let’s get warmed up with this list of potential Oscar hopefuls that Variety put together (and remember, these are movies that range from potential Best Picture nominations to mostly technical nods, so… no need to point out that “so-and-so has no shot at best picture” in the comments). Which of these have you already seen ONTD? Which ones that haven’t come out yet are you most looking forward to?
.

Behold, the thrifty 30: this year's leading candidates to earn at least two nominations for Oscar in picture, director, acting, screenplay, foreign language and animation.Collapse )

btw, if anyone has suggestions for things they want to see in these posts, or if you wanna contribute something to them in general, feel free to say so in the comments.

Vulture,
Variety

Logan Lerman & Ezra for The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
Emma was good too but they were just fantastic. Esp. Logan
wheresandrae 14th-Nov-2012 02:18 am (UTC)
I agree with this completely.
joaniemaloney 14th-Nov-2012 02:33 am (UTC)
Ezra was my fav.
warsawed 14th-Nov-2012 02:41 am (UTC)
I would love if Ezra got some recognition. Still think it was a mistake not to campaign for him with WNTTAK.
briknowsbest 14th-Nov-2012 02:46 am (UTC)
ugh MTE. He and Tilda both slayed me in that movie.

whiskybars 14th-Nov-2012 02:51 am (UTC)

ia logan carried the movie soo well
briknowsbest 14th-Nov-2012 02:47 am (UTC)
Logan and Ezra were fucking fabulous in that movie.
scriptedending 14th-Nov-2012 03:12 am (UTC)
IA completely with these sentiments, though I am sure they will not be nominated. Not traditional enough for the Oscars. :/
aglows 14th-Nov-2012 02:06 am (UTC)
I need to see Les Mis right now!
teaaet 14th-Nov-2012 02:07 am (UTC)
i can tell you all the nominees right now

best actor: seasoned white dude, seasoned white dude, young white dude, token minority, foreign dude

best actress: young and hot actress, older actress that won't win, older actress that won't win, older actress that won't win, token minority

best picture: shit, shit, shit, shit, REALLY expensive shit, shit, shit, over-hyped foreign film, shit, film featuring at least one token minority

fuck the academy.
cuteej4 14th-Nov-2012 02:08 am (UTC)
Tell us how you really feel
la_petite_singe 14th-Nov-2012 02:09 am (UTC)
exlenne 14th-Nov-2012 02:09 am (UTC)
don't hate the academy, hate hollywood

it's not like there is more than one token minority being given any roles anyway :/

being a black actor in a film not made by tyler perry is basically a guarantee that you're getting nominated
cuteej4 14th-Nov-2012 02:12 am (UTC)
Lol for a second, I thought this said MADE by Tyler Perry and wanted to be like SINCE WHEN HAVE HIS MOVIES
zombieland 14th-Nov-2012 02:10 am (UTC)
lmao i think i'll put money on your choices, tbh
tankmachine 14th-Nov-2012 02:13 am (UTC)
an older actress DID win last time so wow where r u getting ur statistic from u flop
christoph 14th-Nov-2012 02:14 am (UTC)
lol
wheresandrae 14th-Nov-2012 02:19 am (UTC)
I was all about you because of your icon but over-hyped foreign film Amour will not be sry
warsawed 14th-Nov-2012 02:23 am (UTC)
lmao i'm dying
kwikimart 14th-Nov-2012 03:42 am (UTC)
A+
cuteej4 14th-Nov-2012 02:07 am (UTC)
Everything looks good on here but I have an irrational hate for Life of Pi. I don't want that nominated for anything. The CGI in the trailer alone is ridiculous
exlenne 14th-Nov-2012 02:08 am (UTC)
Look at all these movies I haven't seen and probably won't see. Must be Oscar time.
cuteej4 14th-Nov-2012 02:09 am (UTC)
I don't understand the random Oscar buzz for Marigold Hotel. It was a nice, quiet dramedy but certainly not worth awards
whiskybars 14th-Nov-2012 02:10 am (UTC)
The academy loves old people
cuteej4 14th-Nov-2012 02:11 am (UTC)
Blargh. It really was catered to them. I saw it with my mom and I was the youngest in there with my mom being the second youngest
affliction 14th-Nov-2012 02:18 am (UTC)
but doesn't actually like to award them unless they're meryl streep
paranoiattaque 14th-Nov-2012 11:37 pm (UTC)
ia.
la_petite_singe 14th-Nov-2012 02:15 am (UTC)
Yeah, IA. It's sweet, but not at all memorable. I don't really think it'll get noms, though. Globes, maybe, but not Oscar.
wheresandrae 14th-Nov-2012 02:23 am (UTC)
the british members will likely rally around it, also old ppl love that shit (and the academy is a bunch of old people)

who knows maybe quartet will make more of a splash
flawlessglitch 14th-Nov-2012 02:10 am (UTC)
Moonrise Kingdom was hands down one of my favorite movies this year. I wasn't expecting to fall in love with it the way I did but oh my god...just so much love <3
rhapsodeeinblue 14th-Nov-2012 02:30 am (UTC)
It was so cute. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did either. And I saw it on a date and it was the perfect date movie!
scriptedending 14th-Nov-2012 03:19 am (UTC)
I liked it a lot! I am surprised so many people seem to hate it. It was endearing to me.
devolute 14th-Nov-2012 03:56 am (UTC)
I haven't seen it yet because it seems too precocious and just overall looks like it's trying to hard, but maybe I'll give it a shot tonight. ~nothing better to do~ + my queen françoise got a lot of buzz from the soundtrack
cuteej4 14th-Nov-2012 02:10 am (UTC)
I've seen 4 from this list and would like to see 14 others
kurtvonnegut 14th-Nov-2012 02:11 am (UTC)
BERNIE is streaming on netflix in case u guys wanna watch! i just put it in my queue like an hour ago and i had no idea it had oscar buzz
eaglefan2011 14th-Nov-2012 02:11 am (UTC)
i don't think i've seen any movies this year
i want to see lincoln and les mis
tankmachine 14th-Nov-2012 02:11 am (UTC)
Best Original Song & Judi Dench for Best Supporting Actress for Skyfall imo
la_petite_singe 14th-Nov-2012 02:14 am (UTC)
I'm down with both of those.
whiskybars 14th-Nov-2012 02:17 am (UTC)
plus javier bardem for best supporting actor although i'd never happen 'cause the category is pretty crowded
hateistoodark 14th-Nov-2012 02:24 am (UTC)
Javier was amazing.
theshadowpuppet 14th-Nov-2012 02:25 am (UTC)
If he didn't win for Biutiful, he's not getting shit for Bond. Still pressed as fuck because of that. He was better than everyone that year.
joaniemaloney 14th-Nov-2012 02:34 am (UTC)
is it even eligible for best original song bc it's used bits from the original bond theme?

I mean, I'd love for it to be bc rn I can't think of another song that's as popular + new in this year's releases, but y'know the rules with the academy and all...
leopard_legs 14th-Nov-2012 07:48 pm (UTC)
best supporting actress isn't enough for dame judi

also give her best cinematography, costume, directing, credit for best picture, best actor, fuck it just hand em out to her
zombieland 14th-Nov-2012 02:12 am (UTC)
I love Oscar season, my favorite time of year! I haven't seen any of these movies aside from Argo (which was good, but not worthy of Oscars imo), but I'll catch up on them soon.
cuteej4 14th-Nov-2012 02:13 am (UTC)
I feel like Argo was tense enough and well written/acted enough that I see why it could win some Oscars.
lostinshalott 14th-Nov-2012 02:59 am (UTC)
omg your icon <33333
joaniemaloney 14th-Nov-2012 02:35 am (UTC)
def go see Beasts of the Southern Wild.
lollapoe 14th-Nov-2012 03:02 am (UTC)
Argo was a very entertaining and conventional genre pic, one that is absolutely being hurt by the Oscar talk imo. I liked it a lot, but the hype around it is making me rethink several weak aspects of it I would've probably brushed past if the movie wasn't getting this treatment.
leopard_legs 14th-Nov-2012 07:49 pm (UTC)
I look forward to seeing Argo as it seems my kind of movie, but until then I will be using the term "argo fuck yourself" because it's genius
scorsesedog 14th-Nov-2012 02:13 am (UTC)
i haven't seen many of these but rn all i hope for is qt Quvenzhané Wallis getting a nom
ms_mmelissa 14th-Nov-2012 02:28 am (UTC)
She has a pretty good shot!
joaniemaloney 14th-Nov-2012 02:35 am (UTC)
THIS IS ALL I WANT, MARTY.
la_petite_singe 14th-Nov-2012 02:13 am (UTC)
I've seen Arbitrage, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Dark Knight Rises, Flight, The Grey, Lincoln, The Master, Moonrise Kingdom, The Sessions, Silver Linings Playbook, Skyfall and Wreck-It Ralph. Currently I'm rooting for Joaquin, Jessica Chastain or Marion (I mean, I'm guessing; haven't seen their movies yet, but I am prepared to stan for both), and not sure about Supporting, though I did love Alan Arkin in Argo and Goodman in Flight. Amy Adams was pretty awesome in The Master, but I think I'll want one of the Les Miz ladies.

eeeeeeeee IDC if they always diss my faves and make me cry; I still love Oscar season ♥
joaniemaloney 14th-Nov-2012 02:35 am (UTC)
haha I'm stanning for Marion too. SHE LOOKS AMAZING IN THE TRAILER OKAY.

I love this time of the year. I thank ONTD for getting me into this bc I used to never watch movies.
browniecakemix 14th-Nov-2012 05:01 am (UTC)
Rust And Bone is fucking phenomenal. Marion is a revelation in it, and I say this as someone who couldn't give two shits about her in English.
la_petite_singe 14th-Nov-2012 05:17 am (UTC)
dkfjljskfs you do not even KNOW, man. I adore the two of them & have a history of picking the year's most intense-feelingsy, heartbreaking movie as my #1 of the year (Shame, Black Swan, A Single Man), so I just know I am gonna love this one.
kurtvonnegut 14th-Nov-2012 02:14 am (UTC)
i want to know the potential nominees for best foreign film, those are usually the best movies, idk i feel like they're always so much more risktaking and original and they're truly judged on merit bc no one knows the actors.
whiskybars 14th-Nov-2012 02:20 am (UTC)
right now i'm guessing it's: amour, lore (which is brilliant and i can't reccomend it enough), a royal affair, the untouchables, caesar must die, beyond the hills and pieta
kurtvonnegut 14th-Nov-2012 02:21 am (UTC)
thanks bb now at least i have a starting point. i always make it a priority to see all the best foreign film nominees
joaniemaloney 14th-Nov-2012 02:36 am (UTC)
ooh I keep forgetting that I've seen The Untouchables.
lostinshalott 14th-Nov-2012 03:00 am (UTC)
A royal affair was really good although it was quite long.
wheresandrae 14th-Nov-2012 03:23 am (UTC)
Nothing would make me happier than to see Romania squeeze in.

I'm very curious about Lore now, I've only heard a little on it but it was mainly muted and not anything that stood out. Thanks for the rec
sereniti_ii 14th-Nov-2012 04:21 am (UTC)
OMG GURL YOU SAW LORE?
I need to know about it. I was slayed by the trailer alone.
NEEEEEED
Untouchables is also really good. I will cut a bitch if they make an American version.
silentxstrom 14th-Nov-2012 02:23 am (UTC)
ia. Foreign movies are almost always better than the American ones at these awards. Iran's "A Separation" won Best Foreign Film this year and it was 1000x better than any of the Best Picture nominations. It's the best movie I've seen all year.
ms_mmelissa 14th-Nov-2012 02:29 am (UTC)
War Witch is another one that is looking good for a nom.
lovejoydiver 14th-Nov-2012 03:11 am (UTC)
pablo lorrain's no is also supposedly really good.
wheresandrae 14th-Nov-2012 03:30 am (UTC)
Austria's Amour and Chile's No have some of the strongest word of mouth and praise imo.
Germany's Barbara is FANTASTIC so I definitely recommend it, not sure about its nom chances though.
The Untouchables will make it (weinstein, worldwide money maker, etc).
Belgium's Our Children could have an outside shot and critics seem to like it enough (I'm SO pissed I missed the screening here last weekend).
Denmark's A Royal Affair seems to be charming people too.

War Witch, Tabu, Beyond the Hills, After Lucia all probably have shit chances but are on my must list
monkehsloot 14th-Nov-2012 01:31 pm (UTC)
I hope the Swedish film Call Girl will get some recognition.
