Another one Bites the Dust: Gymnast Shawn Johnson’s Cultural Appropriation "Jungle Fever" Dance

Dancing With the Stars

On Monday, the stars performed in a dance trio with a pro already eliminated. Mark Ballas -- who helped Johnson win the glitter ball trophy in Season 8 -- joined Johnson and Hough. 

Their samba, with elements of tribal dance, featured a pelvis-rocking Johnson in a faux tribal sequined bikini, while both male partners were shirtless, to screams from the crowd.




Goodman said if he was an audience member he would have cheered, but he was judging the samba and the choreography was self-indulgent. "There was very little samba content. If you go home tomorrow, don't blame me."

Tonioli said as art the dance was fantastic. "Creatively, it was outstanding, but even I have to admit there was very little samba."

I asked this guy, whose family is originally from Ireland, if he ever explored his family's background. His reply was, "Irish people just drink, that's it". I was just like, "Um... open a book, go to Wikipedia".

i was in chicago with my mom last week to get my student visa and most of the cab drivers there seem to be POC like us but we would see white cab drivers around while we were looking for a taxi and not a one of 'em stopped for us

ty op for making this post. i was so ticked off about this. what pissed me off even more is how many people didn't see anything wrong with it. yes, the samba (a brazilian dance) has west african roots...does that excuse the cheap stereotypes that derek and mark went with?

and someone on twop tried to defend it by saying that the russian and ukrainian dancers on the show were culturally appropriating redneck culture during country week. that person fails at life.

eta: let's not forget that this isn't the first time that derek's been a culturally appropriating ass. remember his bollywood samba with maria?

Maori came up with kirituhi (generic tattoos) specifically so non-Maori wouldn't use ta moko, which has specific meanings in their culture.

funny you should mention bollywood, because derek pulled the exact same stunt when he had maria menounos as his partner, when he choreographed a bollywood samba. only it wasn't so much bollywood as it was "bollywood."

I can't stand Derek and it won't surprise me if Shawn (who has really grown as a dancer and performer, but I still give a crap about) doesn't go home tomorrow. People love her.

I'm still salty that Sabrina got sent packing. Sorry to anyone who can't do flips (often "illegal" in these dances) like an Olympic gold medalist.

I'm annoyed at the fact that she continues to do flips when her doctors have told her to stop because it keeps aggravating her knee injury. Is it really that important to do one in every routine?

wasnt sure about the dance been racist but that tweet certainly isnt going down well.

Not saying you calling out what you do as wrong but I worry this is going in a direction where culture will be lost because white people or w/e won't to be allowed to mention them becasue they'll be so scared of being called 'racist'. So hard to find a balance though.

Watching this yesterday, I was yelling at my tv that it was so racist - it's like those Russian ice dancers with their "aboriginal" routine all over again.


AND, it wasn't even a samba. Seriously.
