Both Rihanna and Azealia Banks Surf The Web IRL, Get Slack From Internet Artists

IRHAZ
Just hours after Rihanna performed her single “Diamonds” on Saturday Night Live in front of a backdrop seemingly pulled right off Tumblr dashboards, Azealia Banks dropped a music video for “Atlantis” that featured similar Lisa-Frank-Meets-Seapunk aesthetics. Was it purely coincidence or did Rihanna’s SNL performance and Azealia Banks’ new video for “Atlantis” both pull from the same Internet aesthetic? And do either of them have to answer to the crew of Internet artists that have been calling foul?

Whenever I see this style I always feel like it's inspired by M.I.A. - not sure if she did it ~first or whatever.

Also, was Rihanna lip syncing during SNL?
ponpiri 12th-Nov-2012 08:29 pm (UTC)
Idk but the beginning of her performance didn't sound like she was lip syncing. After a while I wasn't sure if she was or not tbh
drkshdw 12th-Nov-2012 08:35 pm (UTC)
I don't think it's a thing of who did it first - there are a lot of internet artists out there who have been working with this style for a while. I wouldn't be surprised if MIA was inspired by one of them.

She was definitely singing over a track for Diamonds, but also singing live.

No.

Get this 'Reading Rainbow' crap out of here(I like Reading Rainbow though).

Our technology has evolved from this, why the hell go backwards? I don't get it.
drkshdw 12th-Nov-2012 08:34 pm (UTC)
we're a culture of always looking backwards to move forward.

in the early 2000s it was the 1980s
in the 90s it was the 50s, 60s, and 70s

everything comes back around and is brought forward. it's how the cycle of trend works.
drkshdw 12th-Nov-2012 08:32 pm (UTC)
people are so up in arms over this.

scanimate has be around for a while, rihanna and azealia are just the first to bring the trend to the mainstream in some time. but it's nothing new, and they were both kind of late on the trend.

not that serious.
hpxstac 12th-Nov-2012 08:49 pm (UTC)
Would you consider AB to be mainstream? I feel like she's still creating a fanbase for herself. She doesn't seem to be that big yet.
wheresandrae 12th-Nov-2012 08:52 pm (UTC)
she's not radio big but she's big
drkshdw 12th-Nov-2012 09:00 pm (UTC)
she's pretty mainstream recognition wise to me, but maybe it's the new york bubble.
goldengal1193 12th-Nov-2012 08:37 pm (UTC)

I might as well start playing this on my 64 again.
vivisexion 12th-Nov-2012 08:38 pm (UTC)
i hate this "seapunk" tumblr aesthetic so damn bad. it's just tacky and hideous.
bollyhood 12th-Nov-2012 08:39 pm (UTC)
Lmao Rihanna.
active3minutes 12th-Nov-2012 08:43 pm (UTC)
i don't know why people are getting mad at azealia, i could understand with rihanna. it just made no sense whatsoever, what does the song diamonds have to do with the backdrop? it was just so random.
jinnycalderone 12th-Nov-2012 08:44 pm (UTC)
woww, idk what to reply lol. i didnt see riris performance, but seeing pix of it, def gives you mia vibes lol. as well azealias videos too. i was able to see that, and that was the first thing that came to my mind while watching it. i thought the video was terrible and low budget tbh. her music is really weird too. idl her style of rapping. its too fast, and i cant tell whats shes saying lol. which is kinda important to me, cuz i tend to sing along to any song.
hpxstac 12th-Nov-2012 08:47 pm (UTC)
I feel like Rihanna just latches on to whatever her producers/stylists/etc. say is the cool thing to be doing. I can see someone on her team seeing a slight return to the 90's graphics in alternative artists' imagery and pitching it to her as the new funky thing she can do to solidify her status as faux-trendsetter. Idk. I feel like I sound really salty, but I just think 99% of what she does is extremely inauthentic and calculated.

I don't think I know enough about Azealia's aesthetic yet to really say whether or not she's "stealing" other people's imagery to use as her own. She's such a noob though. It still seems like she's trying to find her niche. I mean, I can see her watching some old MIA videos and thinking that this style of video would be a fun concept for her MV.
ponpiri 12th-Nov-2012 08:49 pm (UTC)
AB is an "internet artist" herself, which is why the writer said "it seems like the closer you are to the subject (read: M.I.A., Azealia) the less crap you’ll get."
davetvs 12th-Nov-2012 09:25 pm (UTC)
lol at this false justification double standard
laceleather 12th-Nov-2012 10:57 pm (UTC)
rihanna is painfully calculated and inauthentic.
at least azealia has talent to back her shit up, not to mention she has always had that distinct look.
wheresandrae 12th-Nov-2012 08:51 pm (UTC)
can she take that bindi off????
redglare 12th-Nov-2012 09:01 pm (UTC)
the video and performance both suck, internet ~artists~ (aka dumb seapunk kids on tumblr) suck, this trend sucks and needs to stop i m o
redglare 12th-Nov-2012 09:04 pm (UTC)
i loved azealia's horn hair though omg
spiralend 12th-Nov-2012 09:24 pm (UTC)
idg the hate for rihanna's performance it was cool
azealia's video is embarrassing
mistyraven 12th-Nov-2012 09:26 pm (UTC)
First time I read about seapunk was about a week ago. Now I'm seeing it fucking everywhere.

And hey, Gaga's not the only one who steals shit for her performances :D (not kidding but I still love Gaga)
