This Is Why MTV Doesn’t Show Music Videos Anymore

We can’t remember the last time that we flipped to MTV expecting to see a music video, but it’s safe to say that it was probably in the early ’90s. This hilarious video by Brian Firenzi and Maria Del Carmen of 5 Second Films, which we spotted on Uproxx, explains why the network abandoned its roots, and while it might be a comedy sketch, it is rather on point. We killed music videos with our Napsters and our LimeWires, and what’s more, we’re old now — MTV doesn’t really care if we don’t like Teen Mom 2. Also: there’s the Internet. Click through to check out the clever clip, but be warned: It kind of stings when Firenzi points out that the complaint that MTV doesn’t play music videos anymore is literally old enough to drive a car by now.

i love watching MTV and VH1 at like 6 in the morning when they actually play music vids
lestat 12th-Nov-2012 06:59 pm (UTC)
i used to do that before i'd go to school.
reginageorge 12th-Nov-2012 07:01 pm (UTC)
lol yup when i get up for my 8am i turn that shit on
sdpt 12th-Nov-2012 07:06 pm (UTC)
does vh1 still play the same 5 videos three times in the same hour?
showmesara 12th-Nov-2012 07:08 pm (UTC)
at least in my country VH1 doesn't show any shows and only videos. Though it's always the same videos, at least it's no reality shows
heartxsugar 12th-Nov-2012 07:26 pm (UTC)
I would do the same thing!
jennomac 12th-Nov-2012 07:42 pm (UTC)
I used to do that in high school. I seem to remember VH1 playing the FUCK out of Audioslave's Like a Stone and System of a Down.
cruel_fortuna 12th-Nov-2012 08:58 pm (UTC)
Heh, I remember my freshmen year of high school, I had this cool biology teacher who had a t.v in his back room.

Basically everyone who showed up early to class
(re: four of us ) would just chill in the back room & watch VH1 quite literally until our teacher had to tell us to come sit with the rest of the class because it was time for class.

... I think the rest of the class might have hated us.
jrh19782002 12th-Nov-2012 11:15 pm (UTC)
its sad that kids today dont know that mtv used to play videos all the time.
lestat 12th-Nov-2012 06:59 pm (UTC)
accurate tbh
oblivious_frog 12th-Nov-2012 07:01 pm (UTC)
Love this so much
ani_di_franco 12th-Nov-2012 07:01 pm (UTC)
This is funny and accurate.

where are the lies
ani_di_franco 12th-Nov-2012 07:02 pm (UTC)
Also, I feel bad for poop_of_death

It sucks when a post you made gets rejected and then accepted by a different mod & user later.

the mods always pull dat shit with me, I forgive them tho.
ani_di_franco 12th-Nov-2012 07:06 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I have better thing to do than hold a grudge against people I don't know in real life, but it does discourage posting. I know I have cut back on the amount of posts I create due to situations like this.
soramai 12th-Nov-2012 07:07 pm (UTC)
oh
deearem 12th-Nov-2012 07:09 pm (UTC)
Wtf that sucks

I don't get why this comment has a purple background and all the rest has a blue background.
mynamehere07 12th-Nov-2012 07:10 pm (UTC)
I thought of poop_of_death when I saw this post.

But it happens, mods are human too.
owtfx 12th-Nov-2012 07:14 pm (UTC)
it's so annoying too.

esp with political posts. they'll allow politics on ontd but only for some random topics or if a mod is in the mood.

hahahey 12th-Nov-2012 07:04 pm (UTC)
The challenge is the only reason I watch MTV now, and I hate this season of it so I don't even watch it anymore
evett 12th-Nov-2012 07:05 pm (UTC)
I only watch mtv for Teen Wolf & Awkward.
hypnology 12th-Nov-2012 07:13 pm (UTC)
Same. Plus Awkward.
anus 12th-Nov-2012 07:04 pm (UTC)
When I was in Italy/Greece MTV was the only channel in English and it was constantly playing music videos. 'I Got A Feeling' instantly makes me think of Greece because that one played so many damn times.
cickiz 12th-Nov-2012 07:27 pm (UTC)
yeah when I was in India my life support was MTV India haha. I got so many songs on my ipod after that trip.
noon 12th-Nov-2012 07:04 pm (UTC)
thank goodness, i hope less people complain about ~the good ol' days of mtv~ now
snappple 12th-Nov-2012 07:06 pm (UTC)
Am I the only person alive who doesn't enjoy reality tv? I just cant get into it, it just bores me to death.
hedgerowbustle 12th-Nov-2012 07:11 pm (UTC)
I hate it! I've never gotten the appeal. I wish it would die, but I'm sure that won't happen.
callingstars 12th-Nov-2012 07:15 pm (UTC)
yes, you are literally the only person alive who doesn't enjoy reality tv.
deearem 12th-Nov-2012 07:18 pm (UTC)
I used to watch the amazing VH1 ~love~ shows and I loved Big Brother and such, but now I can't be bothered. Mostly b/c I don't have a DVR :P
hahahey 12th-Nov-2012 07:24 pm (UTC)
I only like certain types of reality TV, there has to be a competitive aspect to it. I'm not interested in Jersey Shore, Real Housewives types of shows
xbellaxmiax 12th-Nov-2012 07:44 pm (UTC)
competition shows are in another category for me
straight-up reality tv where they just follow people around with cameras is what i do not get
tsarinakate1 12th-Nov-2012 09:28 pm (UTC)
Yep this - I enjoy things like Top Chef and RuPaul's Drag Race - but I refuse to watch anything like Jersey Shore and Real Housewives.
xbellaxmiax 12th-Nov-2012 07:42 pm (UTC)
don't worry, i feel like this too. it actually boggles my mind that millions of people tune into other people's lame scripted lives.
that is not entertainment- it's glorified gossip.
rinanina101 12th-Nov-2012 07:50 pm (UTC)
i agree. i just think hollywood has run out of ideas for tv shows so they just broadcast people's lives instead and deem that "entertaining" (which i guess to some people, it is).
manubibi 12th-Nov-2012 08:06 pm (UTC)
No you're not. It's the most idiot thing on tv and it actually ruined it, and people who watch it are lame morbid lurkers to me. Why the fuck would I care about who dates who and who fucks who, there's no point and it's just dumb. I'd rather watch actual entertainment and intelligent things on the internet or on informative channels and if that makes me a snob I'm proud of it. Better being left alone because I seek reasonably cultured stuff than being a sheep in the herd that feeds off the same shite everyone else does. I stopped watching MTV entirely because of this and I don't complain about it, I just look for good music online, and the internet has better music than tv and radio so fuck MTV, even if I used to love it.
mercystars 12th-Nov-2012 08:30 pm (UTC)
I don't like it either. There's enough reality in my life without adding tee vee shows featuring randoms and their problems. =/
angedesoir 12th-Nov-2012 09:21 pm (UTC)
I tend to only watch the audition rounds of SYTYCD.
dragoncrab88 12th-Nov-2012 09:26 pm (UTC)
Nope I mean I have tried with certain shows but most of the time the people on the shows I can't stand. Not even a "love to hate" type but just I can't stand these people period.
ellie_andrews 12th-Nov-2012 09:33 pm (UTC)
I like true crime shows but Idek if that counts. But yeah, IA.
loveumbrella 12th-Nov-2012 09:38 pm (UTC)
I don't like or watch it either, then again I don't watch tv at all (I watch all series online)... though okay sometimes when I visit my parents' I watch those documentary kind of reality tv shows where you have an obese chalk-eating otherkin man who thinks he's a squirrel or something like that
chimbleysweep 12th-Nov-2012 10:20 pm (UTC)
I don't like the kind of reality TV that MTV airs. I used to watch the Real World back in 1999/2000/2001 but got tired of it verrrryy fast.

I guess I only like reality TV with some sort of thoughtful structure, like a talent-based one, or the sort that PBS used to air (surviving different periods in history--Frontier House remains KING OF MY HEART).
koalafrog 13th-Nov-2012 02:01 am (UTC)
I only like Project Runway/Face Off/etc. type shows where the contestants have actual, idk, talent? Otherwise I do not see the point in watching a bunch of trashy fame whores who I would normally work hard to avoid having to interact with irl.
superpchan 12th-Nov-2012 07:06 pm (UTC)
Eh, I only watch MTV's original programming now (Awkward., Teen Wolf, Underemployed). I can watch my music videos online if I really want to. Plus, I can choose to watch whatever video whenever I want rather than waiting for it to air in a lineup.
sdpt 12th-Nov-2012 07:14 pm (UTC)
mtv is kind of in the same arena as video rental stores. you discover new stuff regardless of your intended choice. Like, I'm into horror movies and every time I went to the video store I'd find something different.. whereas now I know what my favorite genre is and I don't really bother to look at other things outside of my favorite genre... like, say a good movie came out five years ago, I wouldn't even know it existed unless I searched for it via google or something... I wouldn't discover it at random like I would at a video store. Am I explaining myself right? haha
jrh19782002 i miss my video store it had the best stuff :(12th-Nov-2012 11:18 pm (UTC)
my video store here closed down last year.now the only way to rent stuff is threw the mail.
xtoki_dokix 12th-Nov-2012 07:07 pm (UTC)
I was actually talking to my friend about this yesterday.

omfg this is hilarious. daaang. on POINT.

MTV has a channel called MTV HITS that plays only videos all day long though. You just need cable that goes up to the hella hundreds to see it. There's FUSE too.
ani_di_franco 12th-Nov-2012 07:08 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I have MTV Hits & MTV Jams and they both play videos all day long.
lestat 12th-Nov-2012 07:11 pm (UTC)
and mtvu
heygrumpy 12th-Nov-2012 07:12 pm (UTC)
exactly. but now mtv hits/jams basically plays one music video for every 5 proactiv commercials they show.
owtfx 12th-Nov-2012 07:13 pm (UTC)
and the internet
deearem 12th-Nov-2012 07:19 pm (UTC)
I thought Fuse went to shit :/ I used to love love love Fuse b/c they were so focused on music but I feel like they ended all their good shows (starting with Uranium..)
xtoki_dokix 12th-Nov-2012 07:20 pm (UTC)
Decided to add more info on it in case anyone else ever finds themselves wondering what other music channels there are.

MTV Hits - Pop music videos all day long
MTV Jams - Urban music videos all day long? I think
FUSE - Rock/Pop music videos and concert footage and some other odd shows
Country Music Channel - Country music videos all day long
Myx - Asian and American pop videos with some other Asian shows-If you're a KPOP fan then check this channel out for sure since they play KPOP all the time.

AND DON'T FORGET! There are also the Radio channels that don't play VIDEOs but play music all day long as well. These are the Music Choice channels. I love to listen to them when I'm cleaing the house and I'm too tired of my own pretentious music taste lol.

I have all of these channels with ahhh Comcast/Xfinity. I don't know if Dish users get them though. Ok have fun shaking your asses.

yim_yames 12th-Nov-2012 07:28 pm (UTC)
Yes to Music Choice! I play it when I'm cleaning too.
annoyedannushka 13th-Nov-2012 12:04 am (UTC)
The Cool TV.
schexyschteve 13th-Nov-2012 12:07 am (UTC)
I love the Music Choice channels on Comcast.
fight4thislove 12th-Nov-2012 07:31 pm (UTC)
Love MTV hits and MTV Jams. 260 and 261 on my cable here. the only place I can hear Xtina's "Your Body" 10 times a day considering radio ain't playing it lol

Edited at 2012-11-12 07:32 pm (UTC)
rinanina101 12th-Nov-2012 07:57 pm (UTC)
And there's Palladia that mostly plays concert footage.

Some months ago, I watched Queen at Wembley for the first time on it. Unfortunately, it's one of those special channels, so I don't have it anymore.
neko_oni 12th-Nov-2012 10:04 pm (UTC)
They used to have MTVx ~back in they day. It was rock and alternative all day. So awesome.

I was so pissed when I turned it on and it had been replaced with jams.

Still bitter.
