Denzel Washington Urges Actress Daughter To Be Like Viola Davis

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Denzel Washington has urged his daughter to follow Doubt star Viola Davis' path as she embarks on an acting career.

Washington's daughter Olivia is studying the craft at New York University, and he has offered her little advice - except to work hard and be multi-talented.

He tells The Hollywood Reporter, "I say, 'You're black, you're a woman, and you're dark-skinned at that, so you have to be a triple/quadruple threat.'

"I said, 'You gotta learn how to act. You gotta learn how to dance, sing, move onstage...' I said, 'Look at Viola Davis. That's who you want to be. Forget about the little pretty girls; if you're relying on that, when you hit 40, you're out the door. You better have some chops.'

This is basically the mantra every minority kid hears (or SHOULD) from their parents growing up. "Be three times as smart/talented/sharp as the white kids if you ever wanna be considered just as good as them".

Essentially. And sometimes though it can be a detriment when your parents want you to do a ~professional~ career, and get the job where they ~have~ to hire you. :/ Take it from me - the artist.

Reminds me of what someone said about Obama in 2008. How, as a black candidate, he had to be extra-extraordinary. So damn true, especially when you look at his presidency and how his accomplishments are often dismissed, despite Obama competently dealing with five million huge issues, any one of which would have been a defining accomplishment for any other president (health care reform, repealing DADT, killing Osama bin Laden, ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, etc.). =/

Ehhhhhh - he's a great candidate and super smart but most of our presidents have been truly exceptional minus George W. and some others from back in the day.

yes, and see how they're praised? If I hear one more dumb ass republican talking about Ronald Reagan, I will lose my mind!

Um most credible sources view him as very intelligent. Do you want him to have respect from the party that called Bill Clinton a white trash, hillbilly murderer?
ladypolitik 11th-Nov-2012 07:51 pm (UTC)
Well, it's not about demanding respect from racist white Republicans; the original point was simply that Obama catches the ridiculous levels of flack that he does because his critics insist on casting him as being "JUST" as good as his white predecessors, rather than extraordinary.

Only Clinton comes close as far as a true rags-to-success narrative, and in spite of how much he was hated, he did not ensure being called a:

- secret Muslim
- Black Panther
- secretly-fake-U.S.-citizen
- affirmative-action-hire-President-of-the-Harvard-Law-Review
- crackhead-spawn-of-a-womanizing-white-women-stealing-black-mack daddy.

Those assholes also dont question the fact that Clinton was a genius Rhode Scholar in the manner that they they evoke coded racist rhetoric like "meritocracy" and "affirmative action" whenever Obama's scholarship is brought up.

Even if we're to argue that Obama is JUST as good as his white preprocessors, this more than reinforces my original point; Obama has endured a lot of abuse because in THIS society, a POC who is "just good enough" by impartial standards is NOT good enough by racists'/systemic racism standards.

I'll also argue how notable is that when Obama DOES demonstrate himself to be irrefutably more extraordinary than his white predecessors, his racist critics pull this shit:

- "Whatever; his brilliance makes him aloof, over-intellectual, and outta touch with 'us Regular Joes'."
- "Whatever; he's only 'HALF-black'. You People™ cant claim full bragging rights."

All of which is completely calculated and steeped in hypocritical, coded insinuations about his capabilities.

Sounds just like that Chris Rock quote where he talks about his exclusive, rich neighborhood in New Jersey where tons of other super famous black actors and musicians live but the white man next door is just a dentist.

THIS.

My family never said it, but had that attitude. I also had a great teacher (Mrs. Lilian King) who said that and I took it to heart.
