Limited Brands/Victoria's Secret Spokesperson Offers Apology To Offended Individuals

Native Appropriations just received the following apology from Tammy Robert Myers, a spokesperson for Limited Brands:

"We are sorry that the Native American headdress replica used in our recent fashion show has upset individuals. (AKA we're sorry you got offended). We sincerely apologize as we absolutely had no intention to offend anyone. Out of respect, we will not be including the outfit in any broadcast, marketing materials nor in any other way."

so disappointed in my queen karlie for agreeing to wear this. i know it's her job and she probably felt like she couldn't say no to her bosses/those in a position of power, but... still a bit disappointed.
vidriodeperlas 11th-Nov-2012 12:14 am (UTC)
yeah, me too.
runaround_kid 11th-Nov-2012 12:15 am (UTC)
still, most of the blame is on VS themselves. hopefully she learns from this and continues to be flawless in the future.

One of the articles state that Natives can't get bachelor degrees and that's not true.
eccentricvibe 11th-Nov-2012 12:18 am (UTC)
The statistics for Native women are really disturbing.
ppeak 12th-Nov-2012 10:49 am (UTC)
I rather talk about that.

Wow.

Why are we focused on a costume for a fashion show that won't even air and not focusing the real issues?
evangelion 11th-Nov-2012 12:24 am (UTC)
i think i figure out what bugs me. instead of coming from the perspective of "hey you aren't aware of what's going on and this is how you're being offensive, here let me educate you" usually the people voicing their opinions are coming in saying, VS AND OTHER PEOPLE YOU ARE THE DEVIL HOW DARE YOU DO SUCH A THING YOU INSENSITIVE PIECE OF SHIT. and they're just scratching their head like it's just feathers... i don't get it lolz.

i didn't know the connection at all before this post and thought people were making a big deal over nothing. now that i see WHY people have a problem with it, i understand, but previously everything was filled with such vitriol and hate from the start that it seemed overblown.

for some of you this may be as common knowledge as the sky being blue but for some of us we didn't know it was an issue still in society today. i guess i'm just saying don't jump down someone's throat next time, calmly explain WHY or else they're going to start getting into defense mode because you're attacking them and who the hell responds well to that?

Omgaa tone argument!!!! Don't tell me how I'm supposed to be mad.

I'm offended by what u said so I'm allowed to be a cunt @ u!!!

Deal w it!
300psychosis 11th-Nov-2012 12:31 am (UTC)
I actually agree in parts, but on the other hand I also understand people's reactions, because many of them are directly affected by this and those 'sorry I offended you' apologizes are always shit.
A 'sorry we fucked up hard' would be a better reaction.
_thirty2flavors 11th-Nov-2012 12:32 am (UTC)
The problem with this argument is you're putting the burden back on the oppressed group. Like, "well, maybe people would be more understanding if you didn't get so angry, jeeze!" It preferences the feelings of the oppressors over the feeling of the oppressed, as if someone calling your actions racist(/sexist/homophobic/whatever) is in any way equal to being the victim of racism, sexism, homophobia etc. It's not.
publicfrenemy 11th-Nov-2012 01:04 am (UTC)
I did explain it to you on the other page, but it was after you wrote this comment. Anyway...

I'm not Native American, so I can't really understand the feelings behind this, but I did study early American history in graduate school, so there's that.

I encourage you to rethink how you approach these things. Instead of getting defensive immediately, take some time to read and think about the reason why people are offending. you're right that asking somebody is a fine place to start, but don't do it from a defensive posture.

There is a lot of literature about this topic. As with all questions in life, it's really your responsibility to try to better understand the world you inhabit. If you truly don't care about other people's feelings, that's fine, but just prepare for them to be mad. If you have good intentions, let them show.
palebluedot09 11th-Nov-2012 01:09 am (UTC)
it's not their job to educate you or other people

and if people will shut their ears and stop listening bc of tone that says a lot about them
nicholasdee 11th-Nov-2012 01:26 am (UTC)
the problem with "its not my job to educate you!!!" arguments is that in cases like this, the offense is not known to the greater public. The prevalence of these instances shows that its not something that is commonly knows as racist, like blackface is. If someone doesn't know to research something because they don't know its a thing, they can't educate themselves on it.
hearxmexrawr 11th-Nov-2012 02:25 am (UTC)
idk. you try explaining why something you see everyday is wrong/upsets you to about...lets say 10 people...every day. And those people, every day, go "lol, ur just too sensitive!" or "idg why thats a big deal" or "lol shut up (mean word or slur)" or completely ignore you or, maybe even worse, says "oh, yeah that does suck" but they continue doing or saying whatever it was that deeply hurt your feelings. try being nice then.
milkradio 11th-Nov-2012 10:11 am (UTC)
To be fair, I would get pretty sick of having to explain this stuff over and over if I was a poc.
wildelight 11th-Nov-2012 12:28 am (UTC)

I remember Kesha in a headdress, and didn't remember hearing about controversy at the time, but I guess there was some. Also found this:

dressing up like an ethic stereotype for fashion or fun doesn't make you look edgy, cool, or like a hipster, it makes you look like an asshole.

So are we not supposed to ever find inspiration from native americans? People need to get over it, it's not offensive imo.

likeomgitsalice 11th-Nov-2012 12:32 am (UTC)
LOL @ that picture. I love how it's white people who get upset over this stuff more than the actual people of the race being portrayed. It's stupid and disrespectful to someones heritage and shouldn't be done but I think the complaints about it need to be more from the race that should be offended and not white people who want to act and tell like they know what that race is feeling. Also a whole race isn't going to feel the same way towards things...
_thirty2flavors 11th-Nov-2012 12:34 am (UTC)
Why does everyone come into these posts to say it's only white people getting offended when there are Native Americans IN THIS POST telling you they're offended??? Lawd.
whitefox 11th-Nov-2012 01:30 am (UTC)

Yeah I am aware some native americans are speaking up against it but there are many more white people acting like they are so offended by it.
maebytonight 11th-Nov-2012 12:40 am (UTC)
Thank you for reminding me only white people use the Internet. There are plenty of Native people in this post and they've been in every other post about appropriation as well.

shut up and stop discounting the voices of natives' who have commented on this over and over again, but you're too ignorant to hear them

hearxmexrawr 11th-Nov-2012 02:39 am (UTC)
No, you just think it's white people complaining because the only people you're listening to are the white ones (who have listened to what natives have actually said).
wowsolovely 11th-Nov-2012 04:30 am (UTC)
do you know a lot of native Americans? Because thes\ one I know actually are offended by this.
mistress_infy 11th-Nov-2012 07:57 am (UTC)
Why do I even bother speaking up about shit anymore? -_-
