Native Appropriations just received the following apology from Tammy Robert Myers, a spokesperson for Limited Brands:
"We are sorry that the Native American headdress replica used in our recent fashion show has upset individuals. (AKA we're sorry you got offended). We sincerely apologize as we absolutely had no intention to offend anyone. Out of respect, we will not be including the outfit in any broadcast, marketing materials nor in any other way."

god that sort of statement makes me angry like no one's business
Wow.
Why are we focused on a costume for a fashion show that won't even air and not focusing the real issues?
i didn't know the connection at all before this post and thought people were making a big deal over nothing. now that i see WHY people have a problem with it, i understand, but previously everything was filled with such vitriol and hate from the start that it seemed overblown.
for some of you this may be as common knowledge as the sky being blue but for some of us we didn't know it was an issue still in society today. i guess i'm just saying don't jump down someone's throat next time, calmly explain WHY or else they're going to start getting into defense mode because you're attacking them and who the hell responds well to that?
I'm offended by what u said so I'm allowed to be a cunt @ u!!!
Deal w it!
A 'sorry we fucked up hard' would be a better reaction.
I'm not Native American, so I can't really understand the feelings behind this, but I did study early American history in graduate school, so there's that.
I encourage you to rethink how you approach these things. Instead of getting defensive immediately, take some time to read and think about the reason why people are offending. you're right that asking somebody is a fine place to start, but don't do it from a defensive posture.
There is a lot of literature about this topic. As with all questions in life, it's really your responsibility to try to better understand the world you inhabit. If you truly don't care about other people's feelings, that's fine, but just prepare for them to be mad. If you have good intentions, let them show.
and if people will shut their ears and stop listening bc of tone that says a lot about them
