I'm really hoping they don't make her an ex or have him be a jilted lover who tried to OD because of her. I love ACD!Irene who was straight up just plain smarter than Holmes and beat him at the game. Reducing her to a sex kitten or a maneater is just...no.
I can't stand the way everyone else is made to look so stupid so he can be so awesome. Lisbon and her team are trained investigators. They don't need him to be the reason all of their cases get solved.
That was too cute! He just adds so many little ticks and nuances to Sherlock that make him really endearing. Cumberbatch is an excellent actor, but his Sherlock is just sort of off-putting to me. JLM's can be insensitive, but he never comes across malicious or mean-spirited. You can tell that beneath his love of the puzzle, he actually really cares about helping others.
Yes! He's more socially awkward/oblivious than he is cold or uncaring. And he doesn't view his intelligence as making himself better than anyone else - if anything, he knows how hurtful it can be and, like he pointed out with the plane, he picks up on EVERYTHING and how it can slow/trip him up.
I'd love it if Joan thinks that Sherlock's relationship with Irene was romantic, but then it turns out that she just outsmarted him at something and that is what pushed him off the deep end.
I feel like everyone who mentioned ACD's Irene and her outsmarting him has never actually read that novella. Irene is the least badass and isn't really even a villain, and the whole thing is incredibly sexist, which, coming from ACD, is no surprise. The only reason Sherlock admires her is become he thinks all women are emotional wrecks, and Irene exhibits common fucking sense and blows his mind.
If you compare her to female characters today, then sure, she pales in comparison as she isn't particularly cunning or that great of a character. BUT for the time, and for ACD, I think it was quite a feat and that she bested Sherlock Holmes is good. This doesn't negate the problematic stuff with the story, but still.
I'm not comparing her to figures today. She didn't best him (and that is Watson's pronouncement anyway, which is how he feels, not necessarily how Sherlock does. LBH, Watson would want to feel that way), she figured him out, which wasn't particularly difficult considering how shady he was being. He just didn't expect a woman to do it, which is what surprised him.
Love this show. It's the one I look forward to the most atm even though I usually can't be bothered with procedurals. I just love watching JLM and what he does with the character. I also love that the writers have put the relationship with Watson much more on an equal footing and now with Irene I hope they have the intelligence to not make it a clichéd romance.
Damn you, Sherlock *shakes fist*. I was so mad at fake daddy's "How is the sex?" question lol. I'm glad Joan chewed Sherlock out even though it was a prank.
