'The Breast Milk Baby' doll: Healthy, educational play or too much?

There's a sort of new doll trying to break on the scene again in the U.S. After being unsuccessful since its first attempt to enter the market last year. Apparently the company is hoping to be more successful this year, as AP released the details, including support and endorsements for the toy on November 8, 2012, just before holiday sales and shopping begin.

"The Breast Milk Baby," the world's first breastfeeding baby, is a product of Berjuan Toys, LLC. The doll comes in baby boy or girl, a variety of skin tones, names, and attire. Cameron, Jeremiah, Jessica, Lilyang, Savannah, and Tony each come with a unique accessory that has also been the major obstacle in getting these dolls on the shelves in the United States. Each doll comes with a flowered halter top that has a flower shaped mechanism built in to the breast area. When the doll is held near the mechanism the baby begins to make suckling, gurgling, and burping noises.

if we didn't raise children to follow rigid gender roles and play with specific toys, maybe a lot of boys would want to play with this doll as well and I think that would be great... maybe they would grow up to be men who really valued the female body for what it naturally does and not minimize it to be some sexual thing designed solely for their pleasure.

yeah, and guys might imagine themselves much more relevant for parenting and childrearing than they seem to now. i mean, i know that the imaginary is that there's a family but guys often think of their place as outside of parenting and childrearing habits, you know?

ia

and with all kinds of "house" playsets in general too. if I ever have sons I'll give them access to more domestic toys too and hope that they'll understand that they're not above sharing tasks and helping out with parenting.

I was never a doll person, but I don't see how someone needs a special doll in order to mimic breastfeeding.

"The company says that this engaging activity is healthy, natural, and allows girls to express love and affection just like mommy"

Mommies show love through more than just breastfeeding...

The doll just sounds stupid.
sookehhh 9th-Nov-2012 03:05 am (UTC)
Ok, but will the 8 year olds be able to breastfeed in public?? Because that's obviously an outrage.
valyazhnaya 9th-Nov-2012 03:07 am (UTC)

Too lazy to see if posted already or not.

What irks me about this the most is the penis moves and makes me think the penis is getting hard which is gross.
almightyspaz 9th-Nov-2012 03:08 am (UTC)
Well, I can see how showing girls about breastfeeding, but man baby dolls just creep me out with this whole idea of "Look what you get to do when your older, raise a screaming infant!"
xeroxicide__ 9th-Nov-2012 03:11 am (UTC)
I'd buy my kids one of these before I bought my kid one of those dolls that shit in the diaper. Boob milk over poopy diaper tbh.
annavalentine 9th-Nov-2012 03:11 am (UTC)
Seriously, I'm pregnant with my third, I don't need anything else in my house screaming at me to feed it.

Would you buy this doll for your daughter? Do you believe it is too "sexualized?

Sexualized? Nourishment is what breasts are for. It's their biological function. jfc.
onyxobsidian 9th-Nov-2012 03:12 am (UTC)
Finally, now I as a man can experience the joy of breastfeeding :'-)
daddyissues 9th-Nov-2012 03:12 am (UTC)
lol i didn't think it could get more stupid than those pissing baby dolls but...
filmfreakfranco 9th-Nov-2012 03:14 am (UTC)
people need to be educated at a young age, just like you need to tell your son that he has a "penis" and not a "peepee~"

breastfeeding isn't harmless and is one of the reasons women have breasts so I don't mind this toy.
nobodynomore 9th-Nov-2012 04:09 am (UTC)
Word about the penis (or whatever part). Although the other day I said, "ohh no, she has reddness around her vag" (to my husband, daughter had a rash) and she kept going "VAG VAG VAG VAG". Oh lawd.

I was going to write this off as just one of those European things that reads weirdly to Americans until the part about how they think young girls need to learn about breastfeeding. Little girls do not need to spend their playtime practicing for their futures as housewives. Does this company sell toy ironing boards too?
nicoolesays 9th-Nov-2012 03:16 am (UTC)
Yes, exactly!!!!! In general, that's why I really dislike the realistic baby dolls for little girls.
chelledbrown 9th-Nov-2012 03:22 am (UTC)
I'm not sure why having this doll (or any doll) implies that a little girl is practicing for a future as a house wife, not that there is anything wrong with being a housewife. I'd even go so far as to say that the housewife concept is foreign to most children these days, as few families have the luxury of having either parent not have a paying job and if anything your more likely to have kids pretending to be working parents.
h0tfuss 9th-Nov-2012 03:27 am (UTC)
There's a longstanding problem of boys' toys being purely fun while girls' toys are miniature versions of not-fun adult objects. I'll stop being skeptical of a doll like this when we see toys for young boys that teach them about the values of fatherhood. There aren't any.

ha mfte
agatharuncible 9th-Nov-2012 04:59 am (UTC)
I don't have a problem with domestic-themed toys, but I do have a problem with the fact that people immediately assume they're for girls. tbh if I have kids I won't be opposed to them playing with dolls if they want to, I'll just let them pick their toys regardless of their gender. in fact if they're boys it might actually be beneficial to encourage them. many boys I knew when I was a kid loved "cooking" and "cleaning" toys but as they grew up and were discouraged from playing with them, they started deriding it as "ew, that's for girls!" which I suspect doesn't help make them more prone to think otherwise when they're adults.
a_new_haven 9th-Nov-2012 08:47 am (UTC)
Children in general need to know that breastfeeding is normal (not just little girls), but they don't need to know it as a skill. If they were implying that this doll helps normalize breastfeeding, I'm all for that, but I'm for that for everyone, both genders, whether people ever want to have children or not, just as a removing the stigma thing.
nicoolesays 9th-Nov-2012 03:14 am (UTC)
Um the problem with this isn't that it's "sexualized" but that it reinforces the whole "girls have to be little mothers" thing. How about just let kids be kids for a while.
a_new_haven 9th-Nov-2012 09:07 am (UTC)
Kids like to play grown-up. We have play police costumes and fire fighters too, and trucks and cars even! The problem is not that kids are playing grown-up, it's the separation of girls toys versus boys toys. If the toys stayed the same, but the labeling of them was neutral, there wouldn't be a problem.
