'The Breast Milk Baby' doll: Healthy, educational play or too much?

There's a sort of new doll trying to break on the scene again in the U.S. After being unsuccessful since its first attempt to enter the market last year. Apparently the company is hoping to be more successful this year, as AP released the details, including support and endorsements for the toy on November 8, 2012, just before holiday sales and shopping begin.

"The Breast Milk Baby," the world's first breastfeeding baby, is a product of Berjuan Toys, LLC. The doll comes in baby boy or girl, a variety of skin tones, names, and attire. Cameron, Jeremiah, Jessica, Lilyang, Savannah, and Tony each come with a unique accessory that has also been the major obstacle in getting these dolls on the shelves in the United States. Each doll comes with a flowered halter top that has a flower shaped mechanism built in to the breast area. When the doll is held near the mechanism the baby begins to make suckling, gurgling, and burping noises.

The doll is marketed for children ages 2 years and up. Berjuan Toys believe little girls need to learn to breastfeed. The company says that this engaging activity is healthy, natural, and allows girls to express love and affection just like mommy.

The doll was a hit in Europe, selling millions according to the company's U.S. representative Dennis Lewis. However, last year the doll sold just under 5,000 in the states. Lewis says that retailers like the doll and believe it is an innovative toy, yet are reluctant to put it on shelves, concerned about the controversy it may cause. Feedback in the U.S. last year was that the doll is too "sexualized" for children. According to Associated Press, Lewis' rebuttal to this is, the simulation of natural activity of breastfeeding is "very much less sexualized than Barbie dolls or the sassy Bratz pack."

Another major concern is the price of the doll. Retail Suggested Price for "The Breast Milk Baby" is $89. However, a 50% holiday season discount is available at thebreastmilkbaby.com.

Would you buy this doll for your daughter? Do you believe it is too "sexualized?" Do you believe it is a good fun aid for breastfeeding mothers whose daughters may imitate them anyway with regular dolls?

I wish this toy was available when I was a little girl. Sucks for my baby because I'll never figure that complicated shit out in adulthood.

I wouldn't buy it for my child, if I had a child, but that's a personal choice. I believe in keeping a child innocent, and coming from my own childhood trauma I don't want to make my child grow up fast.
one_hoopy_frood 9th-Nov-2012 02:36 am (UTC)
Using breasts for what they are biologically meant to do is about as innocent as it gets tbh.
dubiously 9th-Nov-2012 02:38 am (UTC)
jfyi that's kinda problematic language because the implication then is breasts not used to feed children are useless and unnecessary.

harborafternoon 9th-Nov-2012 02:38 am (UTC)
innocent of faking breastfeeding? when breastfeeding become a moral or legal wrong??
forkmeup 9th-Nov-2012 02:43 am (UTC)
why isn't breastfeeding innocent?
bent_ley 9th-Nov-2012 03:25 am (UTC)
this is such a weird comment. teaching your child that breasts are for feeding is probably the most innocent thing you can do. instead of pretending like they dont exist and letting other kids teach your kid (at about age 5) that breast are sexual
angelmonster 9th-Nov-2012 03:27 am (UTC)
Humans sexualize breasts, teaching a child about breast feeding is not a bad thing. A doll chomping on them is, though.
broken_organ 9th-Nov-2012 03:43 am (UTC)
I don't plan on buying my child any really gender specific toys unless she really wants one. I didn't play with dolls, loved dinosaurs, lego etc and I think I'm better for it. If she decides she loves Disney princesses, I'll be a little disappointed, but it's up to her I guess.
jewdiful 9th-Nov-2012 04:29 am (UTC)
idk, it creates an association in the child's mind very early than breasts have a primary purpose of nourishing an infant. obviously, they have secondary uses but i don't see how it's harmful for a young girl to view the primary purpose of breasts as a bodily, functional one as opposed to the predominant view in society as one of aesthetic objectification

i think it's a good antidote for a young girl to have a doll she'll play with for a little while, get bored of it and stick in her closet at some point, to create a mental and psychological association between breasts and their positive life-nourishing function.

you have a right to your opinion obvs but i'm trying to compel you to be open-minded at least and consider that this doll actually accomplishes the exact opposite of what you fear that it does. it turns a female body part that's been objectified and exploited by culture into one that has a health function to girls at the age right before they start to feel the oppression by patriarchal, western society.

just consider it, entertaining a thought without accepting it is a sign of wisdom and an exercise that every intelligent human should be doing on a regular basis.

I'm not sure how I feel about the doll in general (seems weird? Then again, some kids like to play mommy/daddy so why not breastfeeding as well) but I don't like all this 'Sexualized' bullshit. I get it, boobs are sexy and arouse people, but that isn't all they are for and I really feel like we need to get past this place where breastfeeding is offensive because people associate breasts with sex.

My mother would happily tell you that after six kids (4 singletons and a set of twins) that breastfeeding is the absolute least sexy thing she's ever done. Also one of the most painful.

Yep. And honestly, I've rarely met a child who has a younger sibling - a breastfed one - who doesn't pretend to breastfeed their dolls. All of the girl toddlers and many of the boys. It's just taking care of a baby!
juteux 9th-Nov-2012 02:49 am (UTC)
I've seen little boys pretend to nurse too. Super cute :)
elementalamber 9th-Nov-2012 02:50 am (UTC)
I'm not saying I'd buy this for my imaginary child, but it's nice not to see a toddler lifting up their shirt in public. :)
chelledbrown 9th-Nov-2012 02:51 am (UTC)
Just wanted to say I love your icon. My OTP of amazingly awesome asskickery. Babs/Dinah brightened my teenage years every month, but has also lead me to a life of comic female snobbery. I often find myself turning up my nose and going "Pft. Black Canary would never!"
almightyspaz 9th-Nov-2012 03:18 am (UTC)
I did it after I saw my baby sitter breastfeed her son. She was more than happy to tell me what she was doing and my mom was cool with it.
archae_ology 9th-Nov-2012 03:52 am (UTC)
Yeah, I didn't and I'm the eldest of four. I played violent games with my dolls which usually involved them being hung or beheaded.
ashtraysoul 9th-Nov-2012 02:47 am (UTC)
ia, that mindset that any naked body is inherently sexual is weird to me
isolatemyheart 9th-Nov-2012 03:27 am (UTC)
a lot of cultures don't even view breasts sexually. obviously not in the western world. =P
one_hoopy_frood 9th-Nov-2012 02:35 am (UTC)
I think it's totally fine. Girls (and boys) do what they see mommy doing. They probably see this if they have a younger sibling. I've seen plenty of girls do it with a regular doll.

Berjuan Toys believe little girls need to learn to breastfeed.
This is pretty awkward though.
xstellargrl 9th-Nov-2012 04:41 am (UTC)
Agreed.

For me it's that I would think that a child could get confused about the use of the breast if it's introduced too early, imo.

If there is a clear understand that it's play and when they become mothers then it's a very healthy option for their children, I'm down.

I'd be just a little disconcerted if I walked in on my two year old daughter trying to put her little nipple in her friends mouth because she does it during play time.

one_hoopy_frood 9th-Nov-2012 04:59 am (UTC)
Yeah, I definitely see where you're coming from there! In the preschool I work at now when stuff like that comes up (though it has never been breastfeeding) we try to do it in a way that explains exactly why it's not the right thing without shaming them for wanting to do it. Like some of the kids try to kiss each other on the mouth a lot and we just say "Kissing is for mommies and daddies, hugs are for friends." It's understandable why they want to do it? But not appropriate.

I imagine saying "We feed our dollies, not our friends" would work in this case, but I'd still have a freak out moment of oh god how do we stop this because it absolutely cannot happen again.
quinnthevixen 9th-Nov-2012 04:05 pm (UTC)
Yep, this. It's natural for kids to be curious about breastfeeding; this curiosity does NOT equate to sexual curiosity at that age, but some adults like to ascribe all breast curiosity as sexual curiosity.
