Jennifer Lawrence: "In Hollywood, I'm obese"

Jennifer Lawrence has opened up about her weight in a new interview - insisting she will never go hungry for a role.

The 22-year-old Hunger Games star tells the new edition of U.S. Elle that she has a healthy appetite - and would never starve herself for a film role.

She also says that by Hollywood standards, she is considered 'a fat actress'.

'In Hollywood, I’m obese. I’m considered a fat actress,' Jennifer told the December issue of the publication.

'I’m Val Kilmer in that one picture on the beach,' she added, referring how the once-buff Kilmer has piled on the pounds over the years.

She goes on to discuss her eating habits: 'I eat like a caveman. I’ll be the only actress who doesn’t have anorexia rumors.'

And she says not even a film role could persuade her to shed weight - so won't be following in the footsteps of starlets such as Mila Kunis, Natalie Portman and Anne Hathaway.

Jennifer explained: 'I'm never going to starve myself for a part. I keep waiting for that one role to come along that scares me enough into dieting, and it just can’t happen. I'm invincible.'

The actress says she wants to be a good role model for her fans, sharing: 'I don’t want little girls to be like, "Oh, I want to look like Katniss, so I’m going to skip dinner."'

'That’s something that I was really conscious of during training, when you’re trying to get your body to look exactly right. I was trying to get my body to look fit and strong, not thin and underfed.'

Her body is bangin', lbrCollapse )

She has a great body, Hollywood is fucked up for considering that "fat".
brosling 8th-Nov-2012 06:08 pm (UTC)
well in the context of katniss in the HUNGER games, she's fat

why is she still being asked this question tho
flawlessglitch 8th-Nov-2012 06:08 pm (UTC)
Whatever I love her. It's not like she brings this stuff up on her own, like she runs around and only wants to talk about her weight. It's the only thing people consistently ask her about in every single interview. Could she refuse to answer and look like a total stuck up bitch? Yes. But what difference is it going to make in the long run. At least she's honest and, the vast majority of the time, very personable and polite.
kwikimart 8th-Nov-2012 06:28 pm (UTC)
IKR?!

It's good that she's talking about it, it's great that she's saying that she's not going to change for someone else even just to be an actress.
And it's more believable coming from her tbh because she is curvy.

w/e, I enjoy her.

you go girl, tbqh
xcollsangelx 8th-Nov-2012 06:11 pm (UTC)
I don't think so.

talklikelions 8th-Nov-2012 06:13 pm (UTC)
she makes a good point though, about training for Katniss. Yes, Katniss is super skinny, but if they'd cast an emaciated actor, shit would have gone down. If they'd forced Jen to lose a ton of weight even MORE shit would go down. And saying she was trying to look fit- Katniss is thin, but she also talks in the books about having more meat on her bones than a lot of the other tributes, bc she hunts and has muscle from her and Gale's abilities.

So yes, she isn't as skinny as Katniss is described, but she (and Josh) did work to change their body types to fit the characters without going overboard. Which is a fine compromise tbh.
sandvich 8th-Nov-2012 06:21 pm (UTC)
She honestly looked pretty thin to me as Katniss. I think she just has a very round face no matter what actual weight she's at and it makes her seem chubbier than she is.
imnotasquirrel 8th-Nov-2012 06:36 pm (UTC)
yeah i think her face shape trips people up. she will always have a baby face.
talklikelions 8th-Nov-2012 08:12 pm (UTC)
she said she got the training and weight loss out of the way before they even tried to tell her to bc she likes to eat too much lol. That's the closest she's come to alluding needing to lose weight for the role. Josh did the most- he bulked up SO much.

She has a round face yeah, and she has boobs and a gorgeous bum. It would have taken a LOT of crazy dieting for her to lose those assets. She has an hourglass figure, so no matter what she wasn't right going to be super skinny looking.

idk this is one of those things I can go on about. I love her and I think her complete honesty and crazyness makes her even more amazing.
unbirthdayalice 8th-Nov-2012 06:14 pm (UTC)
i really don't think her body is that great.
xdecadentx 8th-Nov-2012 06:20 pm (UTC)
Really?

I think she's annoying as fuck, but in THG when she was in the 'fire' suit I was just like DAMN.
guccipucci 8th-Nov-2012 06:16 pm (UTC)
she does look pretty chunky in interviews
sandvich 8th-Nov-2012 06:19 pm (UTC)
'Obese' might be putting it a little strongly, but she's definitely right about being considered fat by Hollywood standards. My dad couldn't remember Katniss's name after we saw the movie and kept calling her 'the fat girl with the braid.'

And I was like, Dad, you weigh over 300 pounds.
kwikimart 8th-Nov-2012 06:29 pm (UTC)
"fat girl with the braid"

OH DEAR
lordfoldemort 10th-Nov-2012 12:55 am (UTC)
I feel like "obese" was probably most definitely a joke.
stoicana 8th-Nov-2012 06:19 pm (UTC)
Dear Media Assholes,

Women actually think about things other than weight, food, and dieting. Please start prompting your interview subjects to talk about something else. Please stop perpetuating this culture of female inferiority that reduces women to the grand sum of their looks and ability to starve themselves so as to make it easier to point and laugh at how superficial we are and thus make it harder for women to engage in substantive discussions.

Can't think of anything else you could possibly be asking them? Then maybe you shouldn't be fucking interviewing them.

tl;dr I'm sick of weight being the dominant focus of interviews with female celebrities.
kwikimart 8th-Nov-2012 06:30 pm (UTC)
FUCK YES

Also stop with the fashion and relationship questions. So fucking insulting and sexist.
stoicana 8th-Nov-2012 06:34 pm (UTC)
MODERATOR: Okay. Which designers do you prefer?
SECRETARY HILLARY CLINTON: What designers of clothes?
MODERATOR: Yes.
SECRETARY CLINTON: Would you ever ask a man that question?
MODERATOR: Probably not. Probably not.

And this was AFTER she'd just given some advise to a young female lawyer about succeeding in a world full of sexist attitudes.
imnotasquirrel 8th-Nov-2012 06:21 pm (UTC)
I never know what’s going to come out of my mouth, and it’s horrible. I don’t find it positive in any way.

well... at least she admits this? i still remember when she called herself "dykey" for being a tomboy. nhft.
pineandapple 8th-Nov-2012 06:21 pm (UTC)
She's been getting on my nerves lately, and I don't know why. Fans, please stop trying so hard. She's pretty and talented, but not some goddess.
bluekrinkle 8th-Nov-2012 06:22 pm (UTC)
Oh honey, pin a rose on your nose.
kwikimart 8th-Nov-2012 06:56 pm (UTC)
What does that mean?
Also where is your icon from? This is the first time I really looked at it and realised that Marion Cotillard is definitely not whoever is in your icon.
bluekrinkle 8th-Nov-2012 07:43 pm (UTC)
It means la-di-da, I suppose. It's a Stephanie Tanner quote from Full House.
The whole thing is just a bit ridiculous to me.

He's from the CocoRosie video Gallows. No idea what his name is.

I think she genuinely does have foot in mouth disease.
I used to believe she was putting it on but I think she genuinely is just a rambling little idiot.
I love JLaw, I think she's hilarious and weird and very talented.
I can already predict ONTD will be FURIOUS that a 'bigger' actress dares to be happy about her weight or confronational.
You guise literally live to scrutinise and judge thin actresses and concern troll curvy ones but how dare they ever try to define themselves or fight back against the industry's horrible body fascism.
It's not like she can avoid the questions, people are OBSESSED with women's bodies and she is treated like a freak because she's not a size 2.

You guys can be so shitty sometimes.
wheezy_wazlib 8th-Nov-2012 06:29 pm (UTC)
This is a very good comment. I like Jennifer too, but perhaps she shouldn't have said "obese" since that's just a gross exaggeration. The word conjures up images of someone morbidly overweight and it was just overly dramatic on Jennifer's part to say that especially when weight/body/image topics can be so controversial, and not just in this comm.
kwikimart 8th-Nov-2012 06:43 pm (UTC)
IA that she phrased herself awkwardly but I can imagine that's a combo of frustration + hyperbole.
We're all well aware that there are so many people in Hollywood with distorted body images that really must look at her and think she's a whale.
I also feel that she's not as confident as she'd like to be when it comes to her body, it must be annoying to put all your heart into a role and then all you get are reviews calling you 'chunky' or w/e.
I like her but she's got to start to learn to think before she speaks and honestly I believe she has the maturity to do that, it's just...taking a while.
suicida1poptart 8th-Nov-2012 08:00 pm (UTC)
ia, for such a (relatively) progressive group of internet commenters ontd is pretty damn rife w/ body shaming in basically every post that has anything to do with a woman's body
in_styles 9th-Nov-2012 12:12 am (UTC)
Ia. There's nothing wrong with anything she said her imo.
