Jennifer Lawrence: "In Hollywood, I'm obese"

Jennifer Lawrence has opened up about her weight in a new interview - insisting she will never go hungry for a role.

The 22-year-old Hunger Games star tells the new edition of U.S. Elle that she has a healthy appetite - and would never starve herself for a film role.

She also says that by Hollywood standards, she is considered 'a fat actress'.

'In Hollywood, I’m obese. I’m considered a fat actress,' Jennifer told the December issue of the publication.

'I’m Val Kilmer in that one picture on the beach,' she added, referring how the once-buff Kilmer has piled on the pounds over the years.

She goes on to discuss her eating habits: 'I eat like a caveman. I’ll be the only actress who doesn’t have anorexia rumors.'

And she says not even a film role could persuade her to shed weight - so won't be following in the footsteps of starlets such as Mila Kunis, Natalie Portman and Anne Hathaway.

Jennifer explained: 'I'm never going to starve myself for a part. I keep waiting for that one role to come along that scares me enough into dieting, and it just can’t happen. I'm invincible.'

The actress says she wants to be a good role model for her fans, sharing: 'I don’t want little girls to be like, "Oh, I want to look like Katniss, so I’m going to skip dinner."'

'That’s something that I was really conscious of during training, when you’re trying to get your body to look exactly right. I was trying to get my body to look fit and strong, not thin and underfed.'

Elsewhere during the interview, Lawrence lifts the lid on her relationship with her British actor boyfriend Nicholas Hoult.

She gushed: '[My boyfriend] is honestly my best friend, and hopefully I’m his best friend too. He’s my favorite person to be around and makes me laugh harder than anybody.'

Jennifer goes on: 'We can eat Cheetos and watch beach volleyball and we turn into two perverted Homer Simpsons, like, "Oh, she’s got a nice ass." I never thought we’d have such different opinions on asses.'

Lawrence also admits to having something of a foot-in-mouth syndrome.

'I never know what’s going to come out of my mouth, and it’s horrible. I don’t find it positive in any way.

'When I get older, I’ll be more mature and poised. And I’ll have control over my mouth.

'One day, I’m going to grow up…When we leave [the interview] I'm going to have a knot in my stomach. I'm going to be like, "Oh, did I say something wrong? I’m going to get in trouble!"'

Jennifer also appears to reveal how much she is worth - but says she still lives modestly.

'Ten million dollars and I’m still living in my parents' condo,' she tells the fashion magazine.

'I've always lived in a tiny rat-infested apartment in New York, or a little condo in LA, or a normal house in Kentucky. I think it would be very bizarre to live in a big mansion by myself.'

Ironic statement about Katniss since she's supposed to be super skinny in the book. lol
heyignatzmouse 8th-Nov-2012 05:40 pm (UTC)
yeah I see where she's coming from but it is called "the hunger games".
like a huge part of the book was how the capital kept them poor and starving while they were off in their own little world living like kings.
kikai_saigono 11th-Nov-2012 10:00 am (UTC)
Have you read the books? Katniss is a hunter who sneaks out of the district to hunt for food that she uses to feed her family and trade for supplies. She's actually one of the most well fed citizens of the district.
onyxobsidian 8th-Nov-2012 05:42 pm (UTC)
I really hated how the movie version didn't show any aspect of HUNGER in the 'Hunger Games'. That's kind of the whole point of the thing, but no one in the entire cast looks like they're starving.
so_chic_doll 8th-Nov-2012 05:44 pm (UTC)
I get her reasoning at the same time though.
sukha4 8th-Nov-2012 05:46 pm (UTC)
Yeah I didn't like how in the movie they all looked really healthy instead of starving.
xdecadentx 8th-Nov-2012 06:09 pm (UTC)
Physically imo she was completely wrong for Katniss.

I get she's supposed to be a good actress, but that film did not convince me.
anolinde 8th-Nov-2012 06:51 pm (UTC)
Meh. It's one of those things, like, are you really going to make a bunch of your main actors (and tons of background actors) starve themselves or go on extensive diets just so they look skinny enough? Probably wouldn't be very good publicity for the movie.
teetersslow 8th-Nov-2012 07:32 pm (UTC)
lol like Chris had to text Liam to tell him to slim down for it. its like the people making the movie forgot it was a thing in the film
themainoffice 9th-Nov-2012 04:09 am (UTC)
I don't understand this reasoning. Katniss and Peeta should theoretically be two of the best fed people in their district- a hunter and a baker's son? She's thin yes, but she's still well fed and clearly gets plenty of exercise so there should be a strength to her body imo
winniechili 8th-Nov-2012 05:33 pm (UTC)
Is she gonna turn into Kate Winslet with this talk?
wheresandrae 8th-Nov-2012 05:34 pm (UTC)
well she's winning her oscar so <3
yeahwell_britt 8th-Nov-2012 05:34 pm (UTC)
how many times is she gonna say this?

we get it girl, you're "fat."
vehiclesshockme 8th-Nov-2012 05:43 pm (UTC)
I bet it's not all unprompted though.
natalitabonita 8th-Nov-2012 05:44 pm (UTC)

treebraids 8th-Nov-2012 05:52 pm (UTC)
she could refuse to answer.
r_a_black 8th-Nov-2012 06:26 pm (UTC)
Actresses are always being asked shit about their bodies tho.

sastra_fuss 8th-Nov-2012 05:36 pm (UTC)
Well shit, if she's a fat actress what does that make gabourey sidibe and melissa mccarthy...
onyxobsidian 8th-Nov-2012 05:50 pm (UTC)
I'm sorry, but Gabourey Sidibe is ridiculously obese. There's nothing okay with that.

Melissa McCarthy should probably lose a few to extend her life and improve her quality of life, but she's nowhere near Gaboureys heft.
mmbien 8th-Nov-2012 06:02 pm (UTC)
lol @ heft. she always looks so uncomfortable under all that flab.
godramaclub 8th-Nov-2012 06:14 pm (UTC)
Why is heft making me laugh so much omg.
withoutyoursmil 8th-Nov-2012 06:20 pm (UTC)
lmao heft.

lol mte
lesbilletsdoux 8th-Nov-2012 06:03 pm (UTC)
obese...i'm sorry, but they are. it doesn't take away from their value and talent, though.
imnotasquirrel 8th-Nov-2012 05:36 pm (UTC)
her comments made me think of this article.

eta: oh hey, she's even mentioned in the first couple of paragraphs:

Jennifer Lawrence, an Oscar nominee for her leading role in “Winter’s Bone,” wants it known that a skimpy morning repast is not going to satisfy her.

“I’m freakish about breakfast,” she explains to an Esquire magazine writer there to interview her. “You’re not gonna order, like, fruit or something, are you? Because I’m gonna eat.” We then learn that Ms. Lawrence “orders the eggs Benedict without looking at the menu.”

Aw, this part about another couple makes me said:
And she was like, ‘What kind of guy’s going to date a vegan?’ And I was like, ‘You’re awesome.’ ”

imnotasquirrel 8th-Nov-2012 06:42 pm (UTC)
i think this article was actually posted on ontd when it came out, and i think the consensus was that shiri sounded like a fucking idiot, lol. and the dude's response was just... stfu.
ditiswritten 8th-Nov-2012 07:46 pm (UTC)
that's horrible. my boyfriend didn't understand when I tried being a vegetarian, but he never pressured me to eat meat.
pseudovirus 13th-Nov-2012 04:43 am (UTC)
i've felt like that at times as a vegan tbh. i've been doing it so long that eating meat/cheese/whatever just... has no appeal to me and would probably make me ill tho

color me surprised when this new guy i'm dating wanted to ~try being vegan~ for me lol i'm like good luck i'll help but rly i don't care if you eat meat babe. still sweet.

I'm sorry, but I can think of a few other people who'd fit Hollywood's definition of "obese" better. JLaw's looking fine to me.
imnotasquirrel 8th-Nov-2012 05:39 pm (UTC)
ikr. i mean, okay, jlaw isn't scary-skinny the way some other hollywood actresses are, but she's trying way too hard here.
whiskybars 8th-Nov-2012 05:40 pm (UTC)
i like some of the things she says and don't mind her at all but i always get the feeling she tries way too hard in general
silkchemise 9th-Nov-2012 06:52 pm (UTC)
ikr
icecreamflavors 10th-Nov-2012 03:34 pm (UTC)
yeah, super late to this post, but mte. megan hilty is 'fat' by hollywood standards. christina hendricks is 'fat' by hollywood standards. jlaw, on the other hand, looks pretty standard to me? like you said, she's not the stick-thin, sample-size, waif type - but tbh a lot of actresses aren't and they're considered perfectly normal.

i mean, jennifer looks like the same size as (off the top of my head) olivia wilde or olivia munn, and nobody ever calls them out for being hollywood-big or whatever. because they aren't.

it's so interesting how people pointing out that jlaw had bigger boobs and a nicer ass than they expected the (presumably) childlike and malnourished katniss to have -> morphed into this myth that jennifer's body is an anomaly by hollywood standards. it really isn't imo. the media can be so emperor's new clothes when they latch onto a narrative they want to latch onto, and the way jlaw answers these questions doesn't help.
natalitabonita 8th-Nov-2012 05:43 pm (UTC)
IA but ever since she took the role of Katniss she's been told she's fat, so she has a point
thecanuckian 8th-Nov-2012 06:06 pm (UTC)
i haven't even seen the movie but i'm already in love with Fix It Felix.

help
hellafun 10th-Nov-2012 02:30 am (UTC)
Fix it felix! The movie was soooo good!
wickedwatch 8th-Nov-2012 05:37 pm (UTC)
That's great that she's comfortable with eating/her body. But isn't Katniss suppose to be super skinny because of the poorer conditions she lives in?
natalitabonita 8th-Nov-2012 05:42 pm (UTC)
can you imagine an actress super skinny taking that role?? the gossip around her and the bulling would be horrible, she would be seeing as an anorexic even if she swears she was born skinny
onyxobsidian 8th-Nov-2012 05:51 pm (UTC)
But that's the casting director's fault, not J.Law's.

I'm sure there weren't a lack of emaciated actresses out there who would have taken the role.
icecreamflavors 10th-Nov-2012 03:10 pm (UTC)
i don't think it would be that big a deal tbh. natalie and mila got really thin for black swan and rooney lost weight to play lisbeth salander - none of them were bullied for it. it's hardly out of ordinary for actresses to change themselves to suit specific roles.
myxwill 8th-Nov-2012 06:28 pm (UTC)
I never read the book, but a lot of fans said she hunted a lot. Maybe she would be skinnier, but also very muscular and toned.
misoras 8th-Nov-2012 05:37 pm (UTC)
lol i am so over these dumb fucking soundbites, shit. i think i still like her icr.
winonaforever 8th-Nov-2012 05:38 pm (UTC)
SO over the weigh talk. smh
tobesurrounded 8th-Nov-2012 05:39 pm (UTC)
she'll probably always going to get asked about it, like kate winslet
winonaforever 8th-Nov-2012 05:41 pm (UTC)
Kate Winslet brings it up even when not asked about it tho.
wheezy_wazlib 8th-Nov-2012 05:40 pm (UTC)
Does she get asked about it all the time in her interviews or is it something she brings up? If they pose the question to her then I guess she can't help but answer, but if she discusses it with no prompt then I don't know what purpose it would serve to keep repeating herself constantly.
