Karlie Kloss Wears Native American Headdress At Victoria's Secret Fashion Show

Model all-star and noted cookie baker Karlie Kloss is no stranger to the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show runway. With her tall, lean figure and flowing hair, she's a natural pick to show off the company's hottest looks -- even if she doesn't officially have those angel wings.

But after scoping out Wednesday night's 2012 show in New York, we're sure that one of Kloss' looks is sure to cause controversy. (A bigger one than her nude pics. And her photoshopped ribs.)

Wearing a leopard print bikini, Kloss did her famous strut down the runway with some pretty hefty accessories: layers of turquoise jewelry and some lucite, fringe-covered heels. But the towering Native American-style headdress on her head is sure to get the most heat. (Have we learned anything from Paul Frank's ill-advised Fashion's Night Out party?)

The maybe-forthcoming Karlie Kontroversy comes at a sensitive time. No Doubt pulled their newest video for "Looking Hot" from YouTube and TV after Gwen Stefani's Native American costume sparked backlash. The band apologized.

AHAHAHAHHA. best comment on this thread
missjersey 8th-Nov-2012 03:47 pm (UTC)
They know better with all the heat Gwen, Kathy, and Lana are getting. It's a PR move.
icangoforthat 8th-Nov-2012 03:50 pm (UTC)
pretty much. it gets people talking about it
draion 8th-Nov-2012 03:53 pm (UTC)
This is what I'm thinking.
carazon 8th-Nov-2012 03:59 pm (UTC)
There's a difference between knowing and caring though. The fashion industry has shown many times that they just dgaf about cultural appropriation.
verystefunny 8th-Nov-2012 04:03 pm (UTC)
this, exactly.
xdecadentx 8th-Nov-2012 04:07 pm (UTC)

missjersey 8th-Nov-2012 04:15 pm (UTC)
Oh I agree 100%. They don't care and just want attention.
ponpiri 8th-Nov-2012 04:23 pm (UTC)
I wonder if someone gave it to HER on purpose tho...
tragickingdomxo 8th-Nov-2012 04:42 pm (UTC)
Exactly. I think they intentionally threw the turquoise jewelry on just to make it extra ignorant. All tribes are the same to VS!
queenofissues 8th-Nov-2012 04:52 pm (UTC)
I agree. And it's not just all the heat that pop stars have gotten recently, they've been in trouble for offending cultures in the last couple months with their "geisha" lingerie set.
hpxstac 8th-Nov-2012 05:13 pm (UTC)
Definitely.
shrubrub 8th-Nov-2012 05:24 pm (UTC)
Then their PR are out of their damn minds considering they've already been accused of racism this year.
ellenelles 8th-Nov-2012 06:55 pm (UTC)
lol because it's so unfathomable that they just don't give a fuck

ontd needs a reality check sometimes
evett 8th-Nov-2012 03:48 pm (UTC)
Did she consult with Native American friends and Native American studies experts at the University of California?
nuravecunt 8th-Nov-2012 04:30 pm (UTC)
lol your icon. have they called it yet? im leaving this state one day
sharpietoday 8th-Nov-2012 06:12 pm (UTC)
They said they'll be finishing counting today around 7PM
evett 8th-Nov-2012 07:56 pm (UTC)
Miami-Dade finished today but apparently Broward, Palm Beach and Duval are still counting.

I don't know why they just don't call it. Romney can't magically catch up.
joliefoliepolie 8th-Nov-2012 11:28 pm (UTC)
Your icon is wonderful!
sweet_honesty 9th-Nov-2012 01:27 am (UTC)
She is a model under contract, she did not come up with the concept.the designers, however....
heydigital 8th-Nov-2012 03:48 pm (UTC)
The whole outfit is heinous anyway.
13066301 8th-Nov-2012 03:50 pm (UTC)
She looks emaciated
xleighx 8th-Nov-2012 03:56 pm (UTC)
yeah, I was just thinking that she looks the same as I would if I were really, really ill and couldn't eat for a while. I am not supposed to be that thin... she probably isn't either. Some girls are.
hpxstac 8th-Nov-2012 05:18 pm (UTC)
I'm hoping she's just one of those girls who shot up during their teen years and is still waiting to fill out a bit more. Idk though.
deearem 8th-Nov-2012 03:57 pm (UTC)
She in particular has always been really thin.
ponpiri 8th-Nov-2012 04:25 pm (UTC)
They could have made her look better with some tinted lotion or something.
crump 8th-Nov-2012 04:35 pm (UTC)
Ikr? I feel hungry for her.
spillvegas 8th-Nov-2012 04:51 pm (UTC)
seriously. ppl were freaking out about Candice yesterday but she looked obviously very toned. Karlie just looks too skinny. not that it makes it any better but they do fast before these shows, so maybe normally she looks a little better.
hpxstac 8th-Nov-2012 05:15 pm (UTC)
Yeah. She looks like someone who undereats and works out a lot. She's toned, but still manages to look emaciated.
onyxobsidian 8th-Nov-2012 05:44 pm (UTC)
She should be a model
celtic_thistle 9th-Nov-2012 10:52 pm (UTC)
Her face looks sickly, ia.
leviicorpus 10th-Nov-2012 02:58 am (UTC)
I think she looks amazing, actually. /late as fuck comment.
sandvich 8th-Nov-2012 03:50 pm (UTC)
I genuinely don't understand why the VS fashion show is such a big event or why people get excited about it. Like, just. What?
cluelessraf 8th-Nov-2012 03:56 pm (UTC)
It hasn't since Queen Gisele left!
silly_izzy_me 8th-Nov-2012 04:37 pm (UTC)
ikr it's been shit since she left
deearem 8th-Nov-2012 03:57 pm (UTC)
Same
anchors_oceans 8th-Nov-2012 03:58 pm (UTC)
i love it! i've watched it since i was little. imo the outfits/show used to be a lot better but the stage, lights, props, music, plus i desperately wanted to be a VS angel when i was younger. it's all really fun to me. and it reminds me that it's almost christmas time.
minderbinder 8th-Nov-2012 03:59 pm (UTC)
Same. It's just never been appealing to me at all. If I wasn't on ONTD, I would completely forget it was a thing, tbh.
icangoforthat 8th-Nov-2012 04:04 pm (UTC)
im hoping it loses its appeal soon and they just cancel the whole mess. but i think ratings have gone down since like 05 or something which is why they now add musical guests.

and i like because I follow models but I barely even like the models that they choose now

therearewords 8th-Nov-2012 04:05 pm (UTC)
Right there with you. It's not the only opportunity to see (white) people in lingerie.
xdecadentx 8th-Nov-2012 04:08 pm (UTC)
IDK, I watch it, I think it looks pretty. I don't think it's a huge deal, but I do like to watch it.
bloblawslawblog 8th-Nov-2012 04:08 pm (UTC)
Because there's nothing people enjoy more than watch starving models wear tacky clothing on a runway, while gorging on some Panda Express and vodka.
andres01234 8th-Nov-2012 04:12 pm (UTC)
pretty people
sastra_fuss 8th-Nov-2012 04:14 pm (UTC)
Me either. I'm just like, how is this a thing. I didn't even know it existed until a few years ago
thelovehater 8th-Nov-2012 04:19 pm (UTC)
Honestly, the only semi-fashiony event televised on national tv and it is a big brand everyone has heard of.

Plus, pretty girls in lingerie.
gayporn 8th-Nov-2012 04:32 pm (UTC)
Same. It's hard for me to enjoy something.
hawaii_bombay 8th-Nov-2012 04:49 pm (UTC)
The lingerie looks meh, but I like some of the costumes they wear.
cringinglove 8th-Nov-2012 05:51 pm (UTC)
just knowing how shitty their products are makes it absurd by default to me
myblackass 8th-Nov-2012 05:53 pm (UTC)
I've looked at the photos online but I've never actually watched one.
hatteras 8th-Nov-2012 06:35 pm (UTC)
it's been a pos non factor since 2006 lbr
goldenlockets 8th-Nov-2012 06:38 pm (UTC)
the only one i ever watched was when the spice girls performed on it. then i turned it off lmao
greenfairy_87 8th-Nov-2012 07:08 pm (UTC)
Looking back, it's like its entire point is to make the female viewer feel bad because they're watching women with bodies that are unattainable to the majority of the population wearing lingerie the audience couldn't possibly afford. With hair and make-up that looks flawless only because it was done by a 5-man crew for 2 hours.
hedgerowbustle 8th-Nov-2012 08:26 pm (UTC)
I don't either. Maybe if they modeled their clothes on the runway, I just don't give a crap about lingerie. And I rarely see most of that stuff in the catalog anyway.

are american indians actually offended when white people people wear headdresses or is it only a white person thing?
mistress_infy 8th-Nov-2012 03:54 pm (UTC)
I'm offended. :/
markovnikov 8th-Nov-2012 04:12 pm (UTC)
why is it offensive? like i understand beating your hand across your mouth is racist and offensive, but how are headdresses offensive? i know they have cultural significance, but so do a lot of things that are used in fashion. i accept that it is offensive, i'm just trying to understand why is all!!
backincharge 8th-Nov-2012 03:54 pm (UTC)
This is what I'd like to know tbh.
landah 8th-Nov-2012 03:54 pm (UTC)
white person thing
13066301 8th-Nov-2012 03:55 pm (UTC)
I hope so. I really wouldn't want to be treated like another prop or piece of clothing.
robotpotatoes 8th-Nov-2012 03:56 pm (UTC)
a lot of my native american friends are offended by it
deearem 8th-Nov-2012 03:58 pm (UTC)
Actual Natives are offended. Almost all of the Native users on this site constantly speak out against it in these posts.
pikapika217 8th-Nov-2012 04:00 pm (UTC)
I think they are, especially because the headdresses hold such cultural significance and aren't just something used for fashion
harborafternoon 8th-Nov-2012 04:00 pm (UTC)
are you kidding?

and why do some of you mother fuckers keep white-washing ontd as ~white social justice warriors~?

FUCK OFF
treebraids 8th-Nov-2012 04:01 pm (UTC)
I've seen a couple of NA commenters here and on blogs express displeasure towards it.
winniechili 8th-Nov-2012 04:02 pm (UTC)
Both?
crystalzelda 8th-Nov-2012 04:03 pm (UTC)
it feels like a white person thing because, surprise surprise, nobody listens to Native Americans when they complain about it. But when white ppl speak, it actually gets heard! Story of history.
oddityangel 8th-Nov-2012 04:03 pm (UTC)
I bet you anything that any Native American who does claim to be offended by this kind of misappropriation is likely to be ignored or dismissed. That seems to be how it goes when this sort of conversation occurs.
_underwhelmed 8th-Nov-2012 04:13 pm (UTC)
war bonnets aren't a part of all indigenous groups histories, and first nations people on a whole arent a monolithic group that all have the exact same opinion
kikai_saigono 8th-Nov-2012 04:22 pm (UTC)
As a native american, I wish you wouldn't call me indian.
nicolesnitchie 8th-Nov-2012 05:41 pm (UTC)
idek anymore but i rarely see people complain when models are wearing say african like the headwraps and kente cloths etc or asian or hispanic attire on the runway.
roguish 8th-Nov-2012 06:00 pm (UTC)
Yes. Yes we are.
sdpt 8th-Nov-2012 06:16 pm (UTC)
No because we still live in tipis and wigwams and can't access the Internet to see what non-natives are doing to mock our culture. We are hanging out growing corn and hunting buffalo to realize that 1 in 3 native women will be sexually assaulted by a non-native in her lifetime. We're too busy washing our copper skin in the river and braiding our hair to notice that the mockery of our culture is being accepted by our youth just so they can feel like they're fitting in today's society. We're too busy painting with the colors of the wind to see that our culture is being represented by emaciated non-natives that feed into the stereotypes that been placed upon us since Columbus "discovered America."

I said it in the other post, and I'll say it again: I am just so sick of this crap. I'm tired of having to get out the charts and statistics and links explaining why it's offensive, why it's not okay, why it pisses me off so much, and how it's contributing to the stereotype that indigenous women exist just to fulfill some dumbass fantasy. -_-
roguish 8th-Nov-2012 06:04 pm (UTC)
Preach, bb.
silentxstrom 8th-Nov-2012 08:38 pm (UTC)

LMAO you think she would know better since Ke$ha not only wrote one of her best songs from her last album but was also part of the remix of it. They must not have ever met in person.
ditiswritten 8th-Nov-2012 07:00 pm (UTC)
haha my freshman year roommate's name was Keisha, so when Ke$ha came out I thought that's how you said her name.

I hope people blame VS and not just Karlie. Although she should have refused to wear it.
anchors_oceans 8th-Nov-2012 04:01 pm (UTC)
it's her job and it's an extremely high profile event. i get why she did it. i hope more people blame VS for green lighting the outfit in the first place.
deearem 8th-Nov-2012 04:04 pm (UTC)
I don't think she can afford to refuse to wear it :/ They could easily replace her if they wanted to.
cluelessraf Although she should have refused to wear it.8th-Nov-2012 04:04 pm (UTC)
lol, no. it's her job.
myxwill 8th-Nov-2012 04:10 pm (UTC)
Nope. It's her job, even if she found it offensive, this show isn't even about her. It's about getting a job done. /tyra.
calcified 8th-Nov-2012 04:18 pm (UTC)
Lol do you think she doesn't want her career?

You don't maintain one by being difficult on high-profile jobs.
ponpiri 8th-Nov-2012 04:27 pm (UTC)
That's why I'm wondering if someone sabotaged her tbh
katiluv87 8th-Nov-2012 04:33 pm (UTC)
thats interesting! you mean like another model?
gayporn 8th-Nov-2012 04:37 pm (UTC)
Do you know how fashion WORKS
rctshack 8th-Nov-2012 04:48 pm (UTC)
I agree that VS should be blamed, but this girl couldn't refuse to wear it. Do you understand the ripple that would be sent through the fashion world if a high profile model refused to wear something... even if it's for all the right reasons.
cricketgrl 8th-Nov-2012 05:39 pm (UTC)
Models are typically dumb and ignorant people. They don't really know or understand things such as this. I would totally believe she didn't understand how offensive this would be.
frenchverbs 8th-Nov-2012 07:09 pm (UTC)
Her taking a stand would be cool and admirable, but she's a young model, and she's not on Naomi or Kate Moss's status. If she refused, she likely would have been kicked out of the show and her career would be jeopardized.
sweet_honesty 9th-Nov-2012 01:31 am (UTC)
If she is under contract, no she cannot refuse to wear it.
