Julian Fellowes: I’d be shocked if Downton Abbey didn’t get a series 4

Downton, which finished on a high in the ratings when series three came to a close on Sunday night, is widely expected to run for two more seasons at least, but hasn't officially got the green light from ITV.

However, creator Julian Fellowes is hopeful that it's only a matter of time before he has free reign to create the fourth run of the show, for which it appears he already has a storyline plan.

Speaking to the Telegraph, he said: 'I would hope [there will be more] because of the response to this series, but you know [ITV] are always pretty close to their chest in terms of an actual commission.

'But I think I'd be surprised if there was not a fourth series. We knew who they all were [by series two]. And now we are really involved with them and that takes you forward another step.

Reflecting on the most recent instalment of the hit period drama, he added: 'I am pleased with this [third] series. I thought it worked well.

'It seems to me that the actors have made a very good job of it and the audience response has been great and they kept watching.'

The finale of series three aired on Sunday and drew in an impressive 10.7m viewers, beating the BBC's drama offerings that evening and trouncing the ratings for The X Factor, which used to be ITV's big-hitter.

There will probably be spoilers in the comments, so for those of you who have not yet watched series 3, I'd be wary of entering. For those of you who have watched/suffered through S3, what are your hopes for S4?
