Sharon Osbourne has double mastectomy

In a deeply emotional interview, Sharon Osbourne exclusively reveals to HELLO! magazine that she has undergone a double mastectomy to reduce the risk of contracting breast cancer.

The former X Factor judge – who battled colon cancer ten years ago - recently discovered that she carried a gene that made her predisposed to developing the disease. So, she decided to have both breasts removed.

"As soon as I found out I had the breast cancer gene, I thought: 'The odds are not in my favour'," Sharon tells HELLO! "I've had cancer before and I didn't want to live under that cloud: I decided to just take everything off, and had a double mastectomy."

It's nice to have a post that's not about this fucking election. While it is very important, it's just one country's election and this isn't supposed to be a political site, is it? I have to say, having gone through the cancer process myself, I can understand Sharon wanting to avoid that. It's much more agreeable to go through a 13 hour operation than it is to go through months of chemo and radiation therapy. That's just the fucking lowest crap ever.
iamsimplysara 6th-Nov-2012 08:12 pm (UTC)
Doesn't a mastectomy only usually take 3 or 4 hours? Did she get a reconstruction at the same time?
im_chris_hansen 6th-Nov-2012 08:32 pm (UTC)
maybe she had lymph nodes taken out as preemptive as well?
holypotatoes1 6th-Nov-2012 08:34 pm (UTC)
Maybe it was longer because of her breast implants? :\
wildfawn 7th-Nov-2012 12:35 am (UTC)
i think she must've got the reconstruction where they completely rebuild the breasts of tissue from other parts of the body. it'd help if the article mentioned this though.

I have asymetrical boobs, not pretty, can't wear certain style tops or dresses. I am always pressured by my doctor to get implants but I'm too anxious. I stopped blaming myself for developing this way a while ago and it made me feel better knowing it wasn't my fault. I'm just waiting for a man to love me for who i am not what i look like naked tbh.

sugarcrawler Re: Anyone else?6th-Nov-2012 08:19 pm (UTC)
asymmetrical boobs are normal if ur doc is pressuring u to get implants thats not ethical
fabouluz Re: Anyone else?6th-Nov-2012 08:30 pm (UTC)
I think he is only pressuring because its so severe in my case. After all the implant horror stories its not something I will ever do tbh
valardohaeris Re: Anyone else?6th-Nov-2012 08:23 pm (UTC)
Do you mean asymmetrical or tubular? If just asymmetrical, then what sug said. That's kinda fucked up. With tubular, I don't really know.

If your doctor is pressuring you to get implants you need to find a new doctor.
ahiru_duck Re: Anyone else?6th-Nov-2012 08:35 pm (UTC)
At JCP, they sell mastectomy pasties for real cheap. They come in all sizes A to DDDD.
janeeyre Re: Anyone else?6th-Nov-2012 08:40 pm (UTC)
I'm lopsided and I finally accepted it.
mynamehere07 Re: Anyone else?6th-Nov-2012 08:42 pm (UTC)
Why is your doctor pressuring you? If you aren't feeling that implants are the right choice, then don't let anyone talk you into it.

You can get custom padded bras, but they can be expensive. As for what guys think, a decent guy isn't going to give a shit if one boob is bigger.
hoot Re: Anyone else?6th-Nov-2012 08:53 pm (UTC)
Is your doctor actually pressuring you? Because any doctor who would pressure someone to have a cosmetic procedure should have their license taken away. It's different if it was say, you had extremely large breasts that were causing back problems and your doctor was telling you a reduction would help, but I don't think asymmetric breasts would cause any type of health problems.
wristtattoos Re: Anyone else?6th-Nov-2012 09:34 pm (UTC)
you're beautiful bb. your doctor is an asshole. it happens! its actually really common.
cityxpretty Re: Anyone else?6th-Nov-2012 10:51 pm (UTC)
I understand, but a man will love you regardless because any good person won't care. Corny, but true.

Also, you'd be surprised what a lot of men don't care about.
fuckyess Re: Anyone else?6th-Nov-2012 11:55 pm (UTC)
a GOOD partner, one who's worth being with, won't care

they'll be happy that they get to see/play with boobs of someone they care about or love, no matter the size or sizes

seriously
violetsapphire Re: Anyone else?7th-Nov-2012 12:00 am (UTC)
???? If you are comfortable with your body's appearance, there's no reason why a doctor should even suggest you get implants.
emerica9283 6th-Nov-2012 08:13 pm (UTC)
Good for her. I'll probably do the same later on in life. A lot of women actually do this. My mom died on the 27th of october from bc and it's such a horrible thing to watch.
emerica9283 8th-Nov-2012 02:56 am (UTC)
Hey, super late reply. I have and tested positive for brca 1.
thetxbelle 6th-Nov-2012 08:14 pm (UTC)
This is one of my biggest fears, my grandmother had breast cancer twice in the right breast and once in the left, one of my aunts had it once in one of her breasts and I've already had to undergo mammograms twice because if suspicious lumps that turned out to be fibroid masses.

Edited at 2012-11-06 08:15 pm (UTC)
thetxbelle 6th-Nov-2012 10:42 pm (UTC)
For some reason they don't want to let me do the BRAC analysis and its super expensive if you can't do it through insurance :(
summerstar882 6th-Nov-2012 08:15 pm (UTC)
I would do it if I had some extra money on the side and time away from work in a heartbeat. One less thing to possibly worry about down the road.
miss_almost 6th-Nov-2012 08:27 pm (UTC)
but thats the thing - its not one less thing to worry about down the road. while having a double mastectomy does drastically reduce the risk of getting breast cancer - it does not eliminate it. there are still breast cells left behind, and if those turn cancerous they can spread to lymph nodes.

since she doesnt have breasts to mammogram shell have to rely on physical exams (which, depending on if she got reconstruction might be hard since theres going to be lump of hard scar tissues, etc.) ultrasounds and biopsies.

having a mastectomy (or a double one) can give people a false sense of security. and while they do help, youve still got to get screened for breast cancer.
summerstar882 6th-Nov-2012 08:35 pm (UTC)
I totally understand the process that's why I said possibly. I'm also coming from a position where I think my breasts could use a lift down the road. In other words, I wouldn't particular miss them if they had to go away. If there's a chance of getting new breasts with the help of reconstructive surgery while reducing the percentage of possibly developing breast cancer in the future then it's really a win/win. Speaking on behalf of my situation anyway.

fuckyess 6th-Nov-2012 11:56 pm (UTC)
i thought a radical mastectomy removed all breast tissue and surrounding lymph nodes?
fwee_prower 6th-Nov-2012 08:16 pm (UTC)
remember that episode of nip/tuck where that woman went into the lobby and then cut off her breasts in front of everyone.
kalie_m 6th-Nov-2012 08:17 pm (UTC)
oh my fucking god. Why?
fwee_prower 6th-Nov-2012 08:20 pm (UTC)
she said she carried the gene and every woman in her family died of breast cancer. but she wasn't diagnosed yet so Christian didn't want to do it.

So she casually waled into the waiting room. took out one of those electric blades infront of a full waiting room. plugged it in then proceeded to cut off one breast spraying everyone with blood.

Christian then had to perform the surgery.
kalie_m 6th-Nov-2012 08:17 pm (UTC)
Cancer is so scary and horrible, I hope she never has to deal with it again.

Also, tbh, some of the comments here are kind of strange. Breasts don't make a woman, and this procedure is fairly common.
raised_eyebrows 6th-Nov-2012 08:20 pm (UTC)
That's one of the things that bothers me about the whole "Save the boobies" campaign. It's totally objectifying and it reduces women to their breasts. In some situations, one of the best things you can do is get rid of the "boobies". There should be no shame in that.
sparkysparky 6th-Nov-2012 08:26 pm (UTC)
MFTE!
im_chris_hansen 6th-Nov-2012 08:35 pm (UTC)
especially when you see high school boys wearing that shit at school thinking that theyre soooo clever and that campaign donates very little to actual charity
kalie_m 6th-Nov-2012 08:36 pm (UTC)
omfg the "Save the boobies" campaign is the WORST. You are exactly right, the whole campaign is the sexualization of breast cancer. It's telling us to save the boobs attached to the woman, not the woman attached to the boobs.
hoot 6th-Nov-2012 08:56 pm (UTC)
Yeah, that campaign makes me really uncomfortable. I get that their heart is in the right place, but they really should be concentrating on the fact that breast cancer KILLS and less that "boobies are fun!"
wristtattoos 6th-Nov-2012 09:35 pm (UTC)
TRUTH. I cringe every time I see a shirt or bracelet that says it.
sugarcrawler 6th-Nov-2012 08:20 pm (UTC)
mte, ive read stories of women with this gene getting their breasts removed. especially since a certain gene, theres like above 50% chance of getting the cancer
mondengel 8th-Nov-2012 02:46 am (UTC)
I know I would do it in her position. Having my boobs wouldn't be worth it if getting rid of them meant I could save my life, or even just avoid cancer.
miss_almost 6th-Nov-2012 08:17 pm (UTC)
tbh - i dont think her predisposition to cancer was the only reason she did this.

she had to have her implants removed - she wasnt going to get more put in (and require another surgery to get them removed later in her life) but she cant exactly leave them the way they would look without the implants in them, muscles shift, they will look deflated compared to before, etc.

also, now she has fewer breast cells to get cancer - but having a double mastectomy doesnt eliminate your chances of getting breast cancer - especially if shes got a genetic marker for it. so now if she does develop breast cancer, it will be in the tissue left behind and in her lymph nodes. so instead of doing a breast self exam, shes going to be doing lymph node exams checking for cancerous lumps....but lymph nodes can get swollen or lumps for a lot of other reasons.

im not saying she shouldnt have done it...but i dont think this is all about her cancer risk.
sastra_fuss 6th-Nov-2012 08:41 pm (UTC)
But if it significantly lowers the risk, that's good enough for some people.
vervain 6th-Nov-2012 09:18 pm (UTC)
she has done what's best for herself. of course there's a chance but now she has a much lower chance. and that is good enough for some people.
wildfawn 7th-Nov-2012 12:38 am (UTC)
she has an 80% chance of getting breast cancer with that gene, on top of having cancer before... i reckon that was her main reasoning.
yurasama_love 6th-Nov-2012 08:24 pm (UTC)
Oh man, poor thing. I hope everything turns out well for her.
sparkysparky 6th-Nov-2012 08:25 pm (UTC)
but omg!! she's no longer a woman without breasts!! what must her husband think??? did she think of him at all???????????????

jkjk, good for her for putting preventative health first, and not tying her femininity to globs on her chest. Still, it's a very hard and scary decision. Love her! <3
vervain 6th-Nov-2012 09:20 pm (UTC)
lol ur first line.

when christina applegate had hers done i remember people were condemning her for it saying 'why would she do this? she had such beautiful breasts. this is wrong she could have saved them and went through chemo'.

mainly from men.
sparkysparky 6th-Nov-2012 09:24 pm (UTC)
fuck everyone who has that mentality imo. They can step right to the left and off a cliff as far as I'm concerned.
janeeyre 6th-Nov-2012 08:33 pm (UTC)
I'm curious to know what I'm predisposed too. I know diabetes and heart disease is really bad on both sides of my family.
miss_kate18 7th-Nov-2012 08:28 am (UTC)
My parents never told anybody anything about diseases that ran in the family, then when I got diagnosed with OCD and anxiety, I found out that depression and anxiety have affected something like three quarters of the people in my mum's family and a fair amount on dad's side too. I was like, you didn't think to fill me in on this why??
My fiance has anxiety too, and his brother has psychosis, so any children we have are at a huge risk as well.
janeeyre 6th-Nov-2012 08:35 pm (UTC)
And all the stories in here about getting cancer in your twenties. omg:(
joliefoliepolie 6th-Nov-2012 08:37 pm (UTC)
My aunt died of breast cancer, so I'm always terrified that my mother will come home with a diagnosis. She's a doctor so she's always up to date with her mammograms, but I'm still fearful.
mercystars 6th-Nov-2012 08:42 pm (UTC)
my old boss did this, too, and i remember thinking how drastic that seemed until she told me her family history. her mother, two sisters, and grandmother all had breast cancer and her mom and grandmother both died of it. her choice seemed a lot less extreme under those circumstances.
muzicnem 6th-Nov-2012 09:12 pm (UTC)
Yeah I've had patients in that exact same boat where basically all the women in the family had it. I'd do it in a heartbeat if that were the case in my family.
mercystars 6th-Nov-2012 10:58 pm (UTC)
my boss said she would've done it sooner if she'd known how much better it made her feel. i suppose it gave her much better peace of mind. she had good reconstructive surgery done as well.
scaredsquee 7th-Nov-2012 02:37 am (UTC)
i'm adopted so i don't know my family history. i feel like saying take it all, take my uterus, take my ovaries, take my boobs, take it all. i don't need it.
