Election 2012: Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Miley Cyrus and other musician’s odd endorsements

Sure, Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Scott Stapp and Miley Cyrus aren’t exactly political scientists, but that doesn’t stop them from continuing music’s tradition of endorsing presidential candidates.

These artists have millions of fans to share political views with, unlike everyone else who can only annoy their Facebook friends.

Music has always been closely tied to politics. As far back as the 19th century Beethoven’s third symphony was written as a super punk, anti-Napoleon tune. With hours left in the election, maybe some of these musician’s political endorsements will sway any (somehow) undecided voters out there.

Nicki Minaj — Romney … no, wait Obama?

Really, who actually knows what Nicki Minaj is ever thinking? On Lil Wayne’s new “Dedication 4” mixtape Minaj rapped, “I’m a Republican, voting for Mitt Romney/You lazy bitches is fucking up the economy.” This seemed like a Romney endorsement until the president himself aptly deciphered the lyric and pointed out that Minaj often plays different characters. Minaj tweeted at Obama thanking him for understand her and sent the president her love and support.

Miley Cyrus — Obama

Miley is all grown up and can vote in her first presidential election. The 19-year-old pop star showed her support by tweeting a rather awkward mirror shot of herself in an Obama shirt. Obviously, this is how celebrities, politicians and regular people should endorse candidates from here on out. Now, who could Hannah Montana be voting for?

Jared Leto of 30 Seconds To Mars — Obama

Remember when Edward Norton beats the crap out of Jared Leto in “Fight Club”? Well, after that Leto probably wished he had Obamacare. Maybe that’s why he’s such a big Obama supporter. He even stopped in Denver near the end of October to help campaign. If you’re curious, Norton is also an Obama supporter, and recently made the president a campaign video.

Scott Stapp — Not Obama

Scott Stapp and Creed have always been known for nuanced themes and all around mystery. This explains Stapp’s kind of(ish) endorsement of Romney on “Fox and Friends” last month. He said even though he voted for Obama in 2008, he found “his administration to be ineffective.” He sounds like your everyday, blue-collar undecided voter. It’s decision time, Stapp!

The National — Obama

When Romney supporters used the National’s song, “Fake Empire” in a campaign advertisement, the band had a rage blackout and posted a strongly worded statement blasting Romney and the use of the song without permission. The band said the song was written in response to policies enacted while Republicans controlled the White House. The National has also played at Obama campaign stops in Ohio to support him in a second term as president of our fake empire.

Kid Rock — Romney

Kid Rock has done a lot of maturing since his Grammy-nominated and rather nonsensical track “Bawitdaba.” Now he’s into more political music, like 2000’s “Abortion”, which is about, well, abortion. Rock a.k.a Robert James Ritchie has officially endorsed Romney and played a Republican rally at Red Rocks in October. If you’d like to be further confused (disturbed?) watch this PSA by Rock and Sean Penn in which Rock is wearing overalls with no shirt.

Jay-Z — Obama

So, Jay-Z is a businessman, but unlike most of his fellow CEOs, Hova is all about raising taxes on the top 1 percent. Jay-Z even played at an Obama rally Monday night and sang “I got 99 problems but Mitt ain’t one.” If you were worried, there isn’t any political turmoil in the Carter home since Beyonce supports Obama, too.

Vanilla Ice — Romney

Vanilla Ice has always been one to stand out from the pack. He and the Beastie Boys were some of the first successful white rappers and he dated Madonna for a whole eight months. Now, he may very well be one of the only rappers who supports Romney. And if you’re looking for more laughs, check out Ice’s website.

Willie Nelson — Gary Johnson

Third party candidates need some love too, and leave it to the Red Haired Stranger to give it to them. Nelson said, “Gary Johnson is a great American. He will make a great president if elected.” If you’re curious, hit magicians Penn and Teller support Johnson, too.

Alot of polling stations are starting to become chincy with the stickers. I don't know why.
bgwqlc 6th-Nov-2012 07:23 pm (UTC)
I just came back from voting and I was looking for stickers. I was a bit upset when I did not see any.

although I think Stevie Nicks' utterly bizarre poetry about playing piano for MLK Jr. and JFK that was dedicated to Obama is telling.

When is Stevie's poetry not bizarre? lol

Anyone else live in the deep south like me and about to lose their minds???
I'm surrounded by psycho people telling me constantly " Obama is an evil baby killer!" I have heard that 3 freakin' times so far today and it's barely lunch time. I need to move so badly........

steph313 Re: :(6th-Nov-2012 06:28 pm (UTC)
Not deep south, just regular south, and yeah, I can sympathize.

I wish people would just admit they don't even want Romney, they just want "Not Obama". I get a headache listening to the reasons they claim Romney will be a better president because they don't make any sense.
galagooo Re: :(6th-Nov-2012 06:31 pm (UTC)
I feel like if the Democratic candidate weren't black, a lot of bigots wouldn't want to vote for a Mormon. After all, it was a huge deal that Kennedy was a Catholic.
thecosmickid Re: :(6th-Nov-2012 06:54 pm (UTC)
thanks, I feel less alone now.
pickledprose Re: :(6th-Nov-2012 06:28 pm (UTC)
right here. the worst is the stuff my kids come home and tell me. i can take it and deal with the stupid but hearing about someone screaming racist bs at them is scary. i want to move too
benicebitch Re: :(6th-Nov-2012 06:30 pm (UTC)
Yes! I came back to Alabama to go to UA and, as much as I love it, I want to leave so bad!
deceitfulangel Re: :(6th-Nov-2012 06:37 pm (UTC)
ugh, yes! I live in the super north ga mountains and there are so many Romney/Ryan signs it makes me sad. My boss even told me I was an idiot if I voted for "that black guy" =/ He's a very rich white guy, so that figures...
josiefier Re: :(6th-Nov-2012 06:56 pm (UTC)
Not sure I'm in the ~deep south, but yes. Thankfully though I didn't hear anything like that at the polling place. I would've lost my shit for sure.
biologicals Re: :(6th-Nov-2012 07:03 pm (UTC)
I'm in southern Louisiana and it's pretty ridiculous here.. I've been side-eyeing so many people who basically don't have a pot to piss in hollering about how they support Romney.

I'm going insane with all the pro-Romney/anti-Obama shit I have to hear. This shit is cray!
lady_leia_solo Re: :(6th-Nov-2012 07:09 pm (UTC)
I'm in the Deep South, but a rather Democratic city (Shreveport) and I didn't hear any of that at my polling place. But I know what you mean.
bgwqlc Re: :(6th-Nov-2012 07:25 pm (UTC)
I live in the deep south but I live in New Orleans. Most people I know support Obama so I don't have to deal with that. Most of the Romney supporters live out in the suburbs.

YES.

and I go to a public liberal arts college so you'd think it might be different but I seriously can't
danne_gerous Re: :(6th-Nov-2012 07:52 pm (UTC)
Yes. I get it from my boss all day every day. Not to mention everyone else around here. It's so hard to hold my tongue but I know they aren't interested in having any sort of discourse. They want an argument and I refuse.
steph313 6th-Nov-2012 06:25 pm (UTC)
Drove past the polls and glad to see so many people out. Happy I voted a week ago because those lines are ridiculous--but doing my part to give Florida some Obama love.

I actually agree with most of the Libertarianism views... that one being chief among them.
cherisheddesire 6th-Nov-2012 06:25 pm (UTC)
is it odd that miley is voting for obama cause she's from nashville?
galagooo 6th-Nov-2012 06:26 pm (UTC)
Maybe. Otherwise, it's not a surprise at all.
bibbysbaby 6th-Nov-2012 06:27 pm (UTC)

vidriodeperlas 6th-Nov-2012 06:29 pm (UTC)
lol .... as if there are no liberals in nashville?

oh NM, i get what you mean, lol. yeah, i guess that's what they're going for? bc she comes from a stereotypically redneck nashville fam i guess.

She's pro gay rights and women's rights.
steph313 6th-Nov-2012 06:30 pm (UTC)
Her being rich would probably be a better reason to question her Obama vote--if you had to question it, that is.

But there are plenty of us democrats in the south. We're just not as loud as the opposition.
pickledprose 6th-Nov-2012 06:30 pm (UTC)
i think they were talking about the picture she took. idk i didn't see it
tellthylove 6th-Nov-2012 06:32 pm (UTC)
nope. just because you're from or live in the south does not mean you vote republican
distant_lines 6th-Nov-2012 07:06 pm (UTC)
Nashville isn't as conservative as you might think. It's in the South, but it's a city. You get more liberals than you think.
wendilili 6th-Nov-2012 07:23 pm (UTC)
But she has kind of grown up in California though... She spent her whole teen years living in LA.

lol bb your irony got very lost in this
ride_the_jitney 6th-Nov-2012 07:45 pm (UTC)
Lol bb I got what you meant. Kind of a dumb title. Many of these aren't "odd"
magyargirl3 6th-Nov-2012 08:10 pm (UTC)
...No. Nashville is fairly liberal, like most other big cities. :-/
ikansas 6th-Nov-2012 06:26 pm (UTC)
It took all my strength to stay in line for 45 minutes to vote, I almost left because I was bored. This sounds bad, but I'm not a morning person.

he was playing for him at events even before he was the official candidate, if i remember correctly.

that's why i was so fucking pissed off they had him honor the beastie boys at the hall of fame. they must've been disgusted too
dwightk_schrute 6th-Nov-2012 07:47 pm (UTC)
Ugh, yes. It's quite obvious how much Beasties don't agree with Republican views. It pissed me off too.

All the people I Stan for, sans Britney, vote Obama.

Katy, Nicki, Miley, Madonna, Victoria Jusitice, Bethenny Frankel's, and Cheryl said if she could she would vote Obama.
cricketgrl 6th-Nov-2012 06:31 pm (UTC)
I can't stan for Republican celebrities.
