50 Shades of Grey meets its destiny as toilet paper and compost :D

_62428245_62421011

A charity for abuse victims will use donated copies of an erotic bestseller as compost and toilet paper, it said.

Clare Phillipson, of Wearside Women in Need, originally asked people to donate their copy of Fifty Shades of Grey to be burned on 5 November in a bonfire.

She said the themes of sadism and masochism and were "vile". The charity received about 24 copies and said they will now be cut up and recycled.

Publisher Random House said: "The sex scenes are entirely consensual."

The books are about a steamy romance between a businessman and a student.

The charity, based in Washington, originally planned to burn the donated books on a bonfire.

Ms Phillipson said: "There were a range of options.

"We discussed the book burning while getting the message across that this book is a dangerous trend.

"I think we've got a culture now which has completely sexualised women and in which women feel obligated to take part in that culture. We want to draw a line under that.

"We will be cutting them up, using them for toilet roll and sticking them on our compost heap and they will go back into the ground... although the ideas they represent will continue."

Ms Phillipson said in August that money used to buy the book would be better spent supporting victims.

Rofl it's a bit ridic to ask people to buy the books just to burn them, but if you have them and want to get rid of them that way, that's not a bad idea I suppose.

These books are shit. The BDSM is badly researched and problematic, the main character is an abusive asshole who has serious issues and no respect for boundaries as her STALKS the female protagonist, who is in turn one of the most annoying characters I have ever read. It's a mess from beginning to end, it's plagiarized, badly written and has terrible sex scenes and I am judging anyone and everyone who spent money on it.

It's Twilight fanfic. What can you expect?
xdecadentx 6th-Nov-2012 10:09 am (UTC)
Used copies.
kydeon 5th-Nov-2012 05:26 pm (UTC)
I think the idea of book burning is more "dangerous" than 50 Shades.
fleuriee 5th-Nov-2012 05:35 pm (UTC)
me too, thats why using it as bog roll is way better :D
funkybaby 5th-Nov-2012 05:38 pm (UTC)

Absolutely! That being said, they couldn't have picked a more deserving POS.
vervain 6th-Nov-2012 07:12 am (UTC)

You know, as much as I despise 50 Shades of Grey for various reasons, ranging between the absolutely shit "writing" and the horrible misrepresentation of BDSM practices, this Phillipson person irks me greatly. First she displayed blatant and horrible ignorance when she shamed actual BDSM and equated it with abuse, then she wanted to burn a book, and people who want to burn books are garbage, even if said books are 50 Shades of Grey.

... but you're still giving money to that hack? At least have people print and donate fanfic version instead to use as toilet paper.
mhfromnh 5th-Nov-2012 05:40 pm (UTC)
or steal the books.
vervain 6th-Nov-2012 07:15 am (UTC)
i'd rather they not hurt booksellers and put a sales assistant out of work by stealing.
xdecadentx 6th-Nov-2012 10:11 am (UTC)
It says donating used books, so I'm guessing they're second hand.

psubookworm27 5th-Nov-2012 05:34 pm (UTC)
Compost? Well that's a better use for them.
sandstorm 5th-Nov-2012 05:39 pm (UTC)
50 Shades seems like a very poor choice of book to give to survivors of abuse victims, considering how badly the BDSM is said to be handled.
mhfromnh 5th-Nov-2012 05:41 pm (UTC)
but they're gonna use it to wipe dey asses.
bluepassiflora 5th-Nov-2012 06:05 pm (UTC)
Did you read the post?
sandstorm 5th-Nov-2012 06:19 pm (UTC)
Somehow I skipped two lines..nevermind me.
rebeljean 5th-Nov-2012 05:40 pm (UTC)
Ugh my aunt is starting to read this shit... She asked me a couple of days ago if I heard of it and what it's about. That was a really awkward conversation.
dindin 5th-Nov-2012 07:03 pm (UTC)
LOL. What'd you say?

Publisher Random House said: "The sex scenes are entirely consensual."

LOL ok
comalies 5th-Nov-2012 05:41 pm (UTC)
Eh, whatever. I keep meaning to burn my copies of Twilight and Atlas Shrugged because I can't in good conscience take them to a used bookstore where someone will inevitably buy and read them.
djc114 5th-Nov-2012 06:40 pm (UTC)
I use shitty books for art projects.

I made a paper chain for my Christmas tree out of a shitty book.

comalies 5th-Nov-2012 06:46 pm (UTC)
Haha that's great! But I wouldn't get the same satisfaction from making Atlas Shrugged into a paper chain as I would from seeing it burn....unless of course it was a socialist paper chain!
ms_mmelissa 5th-Nov-2012 07:30 pm (UTC)
You could just put them in the recycling.
arsenicsugar 5th-Nov-2012 05:46 pm (UTC)
Hate 50 Shades for its inaccurate depiction of a consensual BDSM relationship, its bad writing, or the fact that it used to be Twilight fanfic, but to draw a link between BDSM and abuse? No.

And book burners are gross and should feel gross, tbh.
cheeseasauras 5th-Nov-2012 05:59 pm (UTC)
This exactly.
ladyvoldything 5th-Nov-2012 09:22 pm (UTC)
it's possible that when she said "sadism and masochism" she meant the sadism and masochism in the book that don't even remotely resemble healthy, consensual BDSM

since from everything i've heard, 50 Shades isn't exactly representing healthy non-abusive kink
