Lady Gaga: “Adele is bigger than me, how come nobody says anything about it?”

Quote of the Day comes from Lady Gaga, who shares some thoughts on body image:

On Adele, weight and “Body Revolution”: I’ve realized I don’t have to do very much anymore but make music, because my fans do it all for me. They carry the message so far. Ever since they saw how much Born This Way could affect people, they wanted to do more and have that sort of space of kindness and compassion. I was acutely aware of some photos on the internet – my mum called me and was like, “Did you gain weight?” – everybody was telling me about it, and I didn’t really care. But when I heard it was on the news, where they talk about wars, the economy crashing and the election – I just thought, ‘This is f*cking ridiculous.’ I mean, what kind of example is that to a young girl sitting at home? I thought, well I don’t really care if they think I’m fat, because, quite honestly, I did gain about 30 pounds. Adele is bigger than me, how come nobody says anything about it? She’s so wonderful and I think her confidence is something I have to match. She has set the bar very high for a lot of women. I need to be a confident woman and just say politically active things when I can that are helpful to young people.”

it looks like we're in the minority with this viewpoint (i guess ontd-ers don't care to read the whole thing)
warsawed 2nd-Nov-2012 04:53 pm (UTC)

no one reads outside of the bold text, welcome 2 ontd
deearem 2nd-Nov-2012 04:59 pm (UTC)
Yeah, agreed. It still makes no sense b/c Adele gets shit for her weight all the damn time.
distantechoes4 2nd-Nov-2012 05:07 pm (UTC)
omg HOW DARE YOU read into her words with actual understanding?

It's obvious Gaga is diabolical and wanted people to make fun of Adeles weight!!11
kubaba 2nd-Nov-2012 05:07 pm (UTC)
just because she tried to smother it up with ooh hey im all into body revolution it doesn't change the quote. What she said about adeles confidence was her trying to refute her previous comment to make it sound nice

I think we all have read the whole thing. It's the fact that's a backhanded compliment. Even if you powder it with compliments, she still blatantly said "Adele is bigger than me, how come nobody says anything about it?" when people have been making fun of her weight as well, for years.

GaGa could have said "other pop-stars are larger than me" but she called out Adele and said she was fat, even if it was supposed to be in a good light. It was rood. If you did that in your group of friends and said, I love that I've gained weight, but why isn't Michelle over here getting made fun of, she's bigger than me"... you have to understand that may make the other girl feel pretty bad.

It's a simple situation where GaGa (maybe accidentally) called someone fat.

usually ontd makes a mountain out of a mole hill re: what gaga says, but they're right this time. it was just unnecessary.

It's called a back-handed compliment. Look into it.
hpxstac 2nd-Nov-2012 08:14 pm (UTC)
This is true. But it was a bit of a back-handed compliment. She could have phrased it infinitely better.
markedglory 2nd-Nov-2012 08:14 pm (UTC)
It was an underhanded compliment. she looks bitter.
