did taylor swift "steal" lyrics from another artist?

i saw some buzz on twitter shortly after taylor swift's new album "red" came out. in her new song "all too well", she has pretty much an exact lyric from a song by singer-songwriter matt nathanson called "i saw" that was on the album "beneath these fireworks" released back in 2003.

COMPARISON

Taylor Swift's song "All Too Well" - 2012
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRXP0Whtlgg
2:13-2:24 "and i forget about you long enough to forget why i needed to"

Matt Nathanson's song "I Saw" - 2003
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTh_b6keips
1:44-1:50 "and i'll forget about you long enough to forget why i need to"

MATT'S THOUGHTS

as for matt nathanson's perspective, here is his (now deleted) tweet that one can assume is about taylor:

MY THOUGHTS

tbh i wouldn't think much about it normally except for the fact that she is a fan of his...she has written HIS lyrics on her arm at her concerts before:

march 6, 2012 http://www.taylorswiftarmlyrics.com/mar6_12.html

WHAT TWITTER IS SAYING

what do you think, ontd? is this a coincidence? is it "stealing" but nbd?

If she's a fan, why would this be considered thievery instead of a homage/reference?
jinnycalderone 2nd-Nov-2012 03:43 am (UTC)
cuz, she didnt credit him, im assuming.
distant_lines 2nd-Nov-2012 03:45 am (UTC)
Cause she makes money off of the song and he doesn't.
astrofisica 2nd-Nov-2012 03:50 am (UTC)
So? Artists, writers, poetics etc all reference their favs like such all the time without paying.
ms_mmelissa 2nd-Nov-2012 03:47 am (UTC)
MTE. If it's one line then it's more like an homage you're supposed to pick up on and think "Oh, cool!"

(people need to go back to English literature classes)
indignantindigo 2nd-Nov-2012 04:19 am (UTC)
It really doesn't sound like a homage.
the_pinkdress 2nd-Nov-2012 04:22 am (UTC)
homages and references are generally to something iconic or something that is symbolic of the thing you're referencing. also, it was integrated into her song, as part of the story in the lyrics, so it wasn't like it fit as a reference.
mrcelebrity 2nd-Nov-2012 03:43 am (UTC)
Who cares. Taylor is making him relevant again.

matt or taylor? i've missed your real housewives posts, btw! i need to start miami! is the 1st season worth watching, or should i start with this season?
isntdaveone 2nd-Nov-2012 04:57 am (UTC)
DON'T WATCH SEASON 1!

it's not essential to get to know the girls and the plots don't continue into season 2.

plus 3 of the originals were replaced by 4 new ones.
shelostcontro1 2nd-Nov-2012 03:44 am (UTC)
that's a pretty basic saying though
musicnextdoor 2nd-Nov-2012 03:50 am (UTC)
exactly.

It's not unique or the sort of thing that would be unlikely to come to a lot of people on their own, and the songs don't sound alike.
shelostcontro1 2nd-Nov-2012 04:03 am (UTC)
imagine if every country artist sued everyone who mentioned whiskey and porches in the same manner they did

Thank you. It's a basic concept and she worded it her way. And it's ONE LINE out of how many songs this girl has written? Geez, the hate for her is just getting to ridiculous levels now.

Thank you. That one line is stealing? Are they kidding me? I'm pretty sure if we googled it there are a million songs that have a line just like or similar to that. It's not unique in any way...
redleigh86 2nd-Nov-2012 05:04 am (UTC)
I'm not a fan of hers, but this was my first thought. As if he was the first person ever to say that? lol, I really don't think so. It's so cliche it shouldn't even be a thing.
devourlove 2nd-Nov-2012 05:36 am (UTC)
very true. that line certainly wasn't that unique, imo. idk if that matters on the subject of potential plagerism, though.
msroyalt 2nd-Nov-2012 05:47 am (UTC)
I don;t like her but I agree 100%, this could def be coincidence
nationalboner 2nd-Nov-2012 05:56 am (UTC)
Really? I've never heard anyone use it before...
threeatatimejay 2nd-Nov-2012 06:04 am (UTC)
TBH, I agree.
hoot 2nd-Nov-2012 12:12 pm (UTC)
I think they both plagiarized it from a 14 year old girl's tumblr tbh.
luvthatdrtywata 2nd-Nov-2012 02:16 pm (UTC)
not in those exact words though, c'mon.
alessar 2nd-Nov-2012 03:06 pm (UTC)
I totally agree. It's like saying "I'm over you" is someone's intellectual first. There's nothing special there, no unique turn of phrase that would be memorable. If someone took a really unique line like "not my circus, not my monkeys" (which is the literal translation of the common Polish way of saying 'not my problem', by the way) then that would be something.
goldenlockets 2nd-Nov-2012 06:47 pm (UTC)

according to google it was used twice. in both those songs. so i guess it is obvious but its also somewhat unique.

superhetoric 2nd-Nov-2012 06:51 am (UTC)
it's not that great or profound, sure. but if she's referenced herself as a fan of his, that's pretty blatant. imitation and inspiration are two totally different things. it takes talent and cleverness to make the leap from one to the other. any person who works on creative projects knows how frustrating this shit can be. even if it's something simple, like a simple shape you use in paintings or a single turn of phrase you used in a short story, it is a slap in the face when someone decides to start copying you, as if no one would notice it.
solyma 2nd-Nov-2012 11:09 pm (UTC)
agreed!
magicuddle 2nd-Nov-2012 10:25 am (UTC)
I'd never heard it before in movies, from my friends, in novels, or songs (I don't listen to Matt Nathanson). So...I kind of disagree. The phrase doesn't even make much sense to me tbh.
whitegirlmob 2nd-Nov-2012 03:44 am (UTC)
Eh, he should be flattered. She'll take that line much further than he ever will.
hey_kayla_jay 2nd-Nov-2012 06:59 am (UTC)
Unfortunately.

I tried really hard to like this comment, but alas not on FB. It's a crying shame, because he's so freaking talented
riruka 2nd-Nov-2012 08:19 am (UTC)
yeah, people should be grateful for being robbed, as long as they are making better use of what they took then it should be a compliment
u_chai 2nd-Nov-2012 10:22 am (UTC)
Yay, you're giving plagiarists a boost of confidence.
callmemaybeplz 2nd-Nov-2012 03:44 am (UTC)
More like homage to his song since she's a fan tbh
rabbitncavylove 2nd-Nov-2012 05:01 am (UTC)
but she doesn't reference him or his song in hers
theonlykow 2nd-Nov-2012 07:39 am (UTC)
That's not how an homage works. You have to recontextualize or repurpose a lyric within a new work, not just say the same dozen words.
