Sandy: Celebs Tweet, Send Prayers During Storm and Its Aftermath

The wrath of superstorm Sandy was felt and experienced far beyond New York City and surrounding areas.

Before, during and after one of the worst storms ever to hit the region -- knocking out power, disabling the transit system, with widespread flooding, downed trees, evacuated homes and at least one hospital -- celebrities both in and out of Sandy's path shared their own storm experiences via Twitter.

Us Weekly rounded up what some of the stars were saying during the disaster.

Kate Gosselin ‏@Kateplusmy8: We are fine... From what I can see, lost one evergreen tree. That's it. I am NOT complaining...we are happy to be safe&warm! #luckyones

Piers Morgan ‏@piersmorgan: Got to hand it to New Yorkers, they're tough as old boots - loads of people out in Manhattan today, carrying on as normal. #Sandy

Kaley Cuoco ‏@KaleyCuoco: Thoughts and prayers are with the east coast!!!

Macy Gray ‏@MacyGraysLife: good moanin. album out today. git it git it. leno tomorrow night. GOD BLESS everybody on the east coast. Be safe. Have a dope day.

Ralph Macchio ‏@ralphmacchio: Hope all r dealing ok in the aftermath. No power and at least seven 20/25+ foot trees down in yard. Bad but coulda been worse.

Alec Baldwin ‏@ABFalecbaldwin: Possibly leaving our home to check into a hotel. #powerless No lights here, no Internet. My wife @hilariabaldwin and I, sitting in the dark wondering where is the storm? (No jokes please)

Tommy Lee ‏@MrTommyLand: Hope everyone is doin ok in hurricane Sandy east coast! Damn!!!

Steven Tyler ‏@IamStevenT: MY THOUGHTS & PRAYERS GO OUT TO THOSE ON THE EAST COAST.... STAY SAFE FROM SUPERSTORM SANDY...... WE'LL SEE U SOON..... NIGHT! XOX The big apple, one of my favorite places is standing strong tonight Sending lots of love and support to the east coast! I hope the sun comes out tomorrow. Hang in there everyone and help if you can #sandy

Kerry Washington ‏@kerrywashington: Praying for all of you who are seeing/feeling/hearing #sandy right now. The big apple, one of my favorite places is standing strong tonight Sending lots of love and support to the east coast! I hope the sun comes out tomorrow. Hang in there everyone and help if you can #sandy

Edward Burns ‏@edward_burns: Nothing but the sounds of wind and sirens tonight in lower Manhattan.

Jason Priestley ‏@Jason_Priestley: Earthquakes in the west... Hurricanes in the East... Maybe the Mayans were right...

Kris Humphries ‏@KrisHumphries: I had to evacuate bro. In a safer spot. #safety.

American Apparel's 'Hurricane Sandy Sale' sparks hate-storm

Several people living in states hard-hit by the post-tropical cyclone were shocked when they opened their email inboxes Monday night to find the above message among safety bulletins and messages from loved ones.

The sale offered customers living in New York, New Jersey, Conneticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virgina and Maryland 20 per cent off of all American Apparel merchandise for the next 36 hours "in case you're bored during the storm."

Nothing because I live in Louisiana and deal with this shit all the time. Hopefully you all won't have people telling you that your way of life shouldn't be rebuilt. From what I understand FEMA has dispatched aid pretty quickly to the area, so that's good!

hearxmexrawr Re: asking again what did sandy do to you30th-Oct-2012 09:32 pm (UTC)
i dont live in the area anymore but my family (south nj near de) is still without power or cell service, and iirc the nuclear plant is shut off because the water pumps weren't working. so idk how they are. also haven't heard from my family in CT.

my friends who have power now and are in varying areas along the shore said

1) their houses are fucked - either burned down, flooded, or collapsed; one guy had a tree fall into their house and ripped off the front porch, another friend had a boat dumped into the side of their house.
2) cars are ruined
3) boardwalks are gone

I live in Philly and for how crazy everyone thought it was going to be, nothing happened. Someone on my FB wrote "Thanks, New Jersey, for being Philly's sandbag" and as sad as it is, it's totally true.
kiki3291 Re: asking again what did sandy do to you30th-Oct-2012 09:35 pm (UTC)
Barely missed us, I am amazed to be honest. Only a few blocks away. My father unfortunately lost his whole backyard due to fallen trees. He woke up in the middle of the night and told me he almost had a heart attack because he thought it fell on him. :(
rpsuc Re: asking again what did sandy do to you30th-Oct-2012 09:37 pm (UTC)
I always lose power during things like this and somehow my block was spared. My friend who lives the next block up is going on 24 hours without electricity though...so that sucks.

Both of my neighbors (on either side) had trees fall on their respective cars and there is a shitload of trees down everywhere so it's hard to get around.

Our hydrangea bush was partially ripped out of the ground so now it's all fucked up and kind of just laying across my front lawn...but since that's all I can really complain about I think I'm really lucky.
wits Re: asking again what did sandy do to you30th-Oct-2012 09:38 pm (UTC)
i'm in virginia and am totally fine but my town is connecticut is 100% without power, a bunch of trees fell down, luckily all the ones in our yard fell away from the house
hazel_belle Re: asking again what did sandy do to you30th-Oct-2012 09:38 pm (UTC)
80+ Houses were burned down, Boardwalks ripped up, over 120 houses were flooded and are structurally damaged.

Here's a photo:

Spared us barely. I mean we are in a little haven bubble. Downed light poles in my dad's apartment complex. We have power, but no internet or cable. Meanwhile up the road? Total destruction. We can't get on any of the major highways due to flooding. My friend has been stuck at work for over 24 hours now...and he's only 10 mins from me.
anydoppelganger Re: asking again what did sandy do to you30th-Oct-2012 09:46 pm (UTC)
in the washington-baltimore metropolitan area and I'm surprised that I still have power considering that we lose power even during the mildest thunderstorms. I feel like the derecho earlier this summer did more damage.

I feel really bad for the people on the coast, in Jersey, and in New York, as well as everyone in West Virginia who's seeing snow. Looks like they got hit really hard. ONTDers who lost power, i hope you get yours back soon.
imsweetgetsome Re: asking again what did sandy do to you30th-Oct-2012 09:47 pm (UTC)
Luckily we didn't really get hit here in Dutchess County, NY. Just some downed branches. We still have power and the works. The town over got fucked, though. 99% of its residents are without power. It's amazing what a difference a couple of miles can make in a storm.

rissa_rose Re: asking again what did sandy do to you30th-Oct-2012 09:48 pm (UTC)
We got hit pretty rough here in Central New Jersey. Insane winds last night and a fair amount of rain. All night the sky lit up blue and green due to exploding transformers all over the place. My entire town lost power by 8:40 last night, though a small section has it back today. Lots of trees down everywhere and quite a bit of flooding in areas that are low-lying or near water sources. The people behind us have a giant aluminum shed that flew up over the fence into our yard; we were so nervous it would fly through our sliding glass door that we had to run out and throw bricks on it. Lots of down trees. I've got power, but no cable, phone, or internet. Worried about my poor shore; I don't like these pictures I'm seeing. :( Hope everyone affected is alright!
cookinguptales Re: asking again what did sandy do to you30th-Oct-2012 09:49 pm (UTC)
Philadelphia. Strong wind, lots of rain. I don't even see any downed branches or anything, though.
naveedchick Re: asking again what did sandy do to you30th-Oct-2012 09:50 pm (UTC)
Toronto, and personally, nothing really. I noticed a ton more leaves, twigs, and thinner branches everywhere during my walk to school. My garage bins and the neighbour's hanging flower pots are even still upright. We had some wind and some rain. Some areas had it more rough than others. The Roots store on Queen St. W caught fire, and a few thousands of people are still without power.
executivehpfan Re: asking again what did sandy do to you30th-Oct-2012 09:54 pm (UTC)
My section of Brooklyn is largely unscathed, thank god. Still have power, water, gas and only minimal damage on the buildings around me from the wind. No flooding.

open_the_blinds Re: asking again what did sandy do to you30th-Oct-2012 10:02 pm (UTC)
A hard pounding rain and strong winds that brought down trees all over the damn place and flooded my basement. Thought we were going to be seriously fucked when the power cut and killed the pump. Luckily the rain slowed and power came back before we lost the furnace and water heater.
shining_starsxx Re: asking again what did sandy do to you30th-Oct-2012 10:05 pm (UTC)
I live in Ohio and we just got a shit ton of wind and rain.We almost lost our power yesterday but that's pretty much it.

Pretty much nothing happened here in Philly but my family lives on the beach on Long Island and are without water, power, and cell service. Somehow our house didn't get flooded though. Freaking miracle since pretty much every other street did.

Sandy didn't do much of anything to me considering I live on the other side of the US (northeast of Seattle, WA). We're getting our own heavy rain/wind event from now until sometime this weekend, then it's back to just a normal rain. It's all good, 'cos I love the rain and the cold. BRING IT ON!
joaniemaloney Re: asking again what did sandy do to you30th-Oct-2012 11:36 pm (UTC)
parts of the city apparently lost power but we got a flicker or so, everything's fine! no falling trees/anything blown over in our area. just a lot of wind and rain overnight!

sergeantquakers Re: asking again what did sandy do to you30th-Oct-2012 11:59 pm (UTC)
I'm in Manhattan but my college is built on a hill and I'm way uptown so other than a few trees down there's no serious damage. Downtown is a wreck, though - the subway system is shut down, we had two days of classes canceled, and NYU is out until Monday (although we still have classes tomorrow which is ridiculous considering the fact that many professors will have a lot of trouble getting here, but I digress). The storm was scary as fuck, though - I was so high and I was on the top floor of a building so I could hear things rattling on the roof.
sviibwhapp 31st-Oct-2012 12:24 am (UTC)
Boston: Knocked a bunch of sticks on my yard and I lost power for about 5 minutes.
It is still raining around here.
simply_inn0cent Re: asking again what did sandy do to you31st-Oct-2012 01:11 am (UTC)
I'm in CT and we got fucked in the ass.

Our town and all of the surrounding towns are mostly without power except for a few streets in each town.

I can't fucking believe we are still having classes when no one can even get off their roads.

Fairfield beach, Rowayton (Darien) and the coastlines of Stamford and Greenwich are royally fucked.
xpirate_queenx Re: asking again what did sandy do to you31st-Oct-2012 02:08 am (UTC)
Other than keep me awake by making the cable box on my cousin's house bang open and shut in a manner reminiscent of someone repeatedly throwing a Buick at the wall above my head all night, not a whole helluva lot.

I'm currently visiting relatives in Alta Vista, VA and we seemed to just catch the very edge of Frankenstorm 5000. No downed trees, no flooding; just a series of ugly, cold, windy, and wet couple of days.

aw. :( what's the story behind this?
supermishelle 30th-Oct-2012 09:25 pm (UTC)
I don't understand why people stay when they are told to evacuate. Don't they send buses to pick them up and take them to safer places? And people who go straight to the beach when they know that a hurricane is going to hit, like wtf. Go home, prepare for a fucking storm. Don't go try to surf and kill your damn self. I was watching msnbc on Sunday and they were filming this kid in Delaware trying to surf those crazy ass waves on the beach ON A BOOGEYBOARD. It was just so hilarious because whenever he would try to surf the wave he would just get knocked back down on the beach. And while they were filming him the newsanchors were shading people like him because they take up emergency rescue squads who could be helping people but they have to drop everything and do rescue people who put themselves in danger.

I live in California so I just don't understand why people would want to stay in the path of a hurricane or go surf in it, wtf?
saikaro_x 30th-Oct-2012 09:27 pm (UTC)
Some people are poor and can't afford to evacuate.
snuffyqui45 30th-Oct-2012 09:30 pm (UTC)
they provide designated shelter areas if you can't afford to leave though. As well as make phone calls to see if ppl are still in their homes.

Some folks just ignore them...idgi
supermishelle 30th-Oct-2012 09:30 pm (UTC)
I was watching the news and I thought they were sending buses to evacuate people who needed assistance? Like they were setting up schools and stuff to take evacuated people.
suicida1poptart 30th-Oct-2012 11:03 pm (UTC)
gurl idk about elsewhere but i can tell you that situation did not apply in ct, it was all the people with the expensive beachfront property that refused to leave. rich old fools, and then they ended up having to get rescued later in the night.
whitegirlthin 30th-Oct-2012 11:44 pm (UTC)
Sure but most of the time it's just people being ignorant. Poor, rich, it doesn't matter.
snuffyqui45 30th-Oct-2012 09:29 pm (UTC)
some people just refuse to think that a storm can touch them. Especially after Irene where the mentality was "well it didn't do much damage that time"

Some people are just idiots tbh. Complete, stubborn idiots
actxappalledx 30th-Oct-2012 09:30 pm (UTC)
This girl I know lives in Rockaway and I have no idea why they didn't evacuate. Her basement and first floor flooded, parts of the boardwalk washed up on lawn/street, etc. I'm guessing they were worried about leaving their house alone, idek
imnotasquirrel 30th-Oct-2012 09:32 pm (UTC)
i think if you refuse to evacuate even after being told to, and then you have to be rescued as a result, you should be forced to help pay for the rescue costs.
lucky_latkes 30th-Oct-2012 09:32 pm (UTC)
A: not everyone can afford to leave B:not everyone is physically able to leave C: people that choose to go out into things like that for superficial reasons are silly

Considering that you live in California, you should understand that not everyone has the resources to evacuate for a disaster.
janeeyre 30th-Oct-2012 09:36 pm (UTC)
IDK, if I wasn't allowed to take my cat, I think I would stay with her tbh S:
kiki3291 30th-Oct-2012 09:39 pm (UTC)
It honestly makes me mad. :/ All the interviews I've seen (which might be biased, granted) have people saying they weren't expecting to be hit since nothing happened with Irene. Which I get, because even I thought the same but if I had been asked to evacuate you know damn well I will be the first one out of there.

I live in NYC so we don't get such crazy weather but still, we were at the brunt of the fucking storm, sometimes you just have to pack your things and go no matter what has happened in the past.
steph313 30th-Oct-2012 09:42 pm (UTC)
Some people don't evacuate because they've ridden through storms before (probably more often than not) with no repercussions. It only takes that one time for them to regret that decision. The other 10 times, you find yourself more annoyed you bought into the media frenzy because your house/neighborhood ends up perfectly fine. It'll make you doubt the next one, and so on.

As for the beach thing--my surfer friends tell me there's no better time to surf than before a storm. It's pretty common. It's dumb (I'd be afraid of the rip currents tbh), but common.

There are elderly, disabled people and those that stay with them because they don't have the ability to transport them. So I can definitely see if someone didn't/couldn't leave if it would very tough for them.
scheisse 30th-Oct-2012 09:46 pm (UTC)
Sometimes it's just really freaking hard to leave your house knowing that you might not come back home... Like, it doesn't make sense, I know, but some peoples' houses are really important to them.
rebeccamars 30th-Oct-2012 10:01 pm (UTC)
I'm in Los Angeles and most times when they tell us to evacuate (from fires) we never do. It's a gamble each time but the fires never get close enough to our house that it's a problem.
xcrypticsugarx 31st-Oct-2012 12:07 am (UTC)
Alot people don't leave because they worried about looting and their personal belongings being stolen which does happen alot.
britaloonie 31st-Oct-2012 12:34 am (UTC)
i was in katrina and didn't/couldn't leave because 1) nobody ever really thought it was gonna hit, like my boss, who said i'd be out of a job if i left since everyone else left. she called me that morning to say it's gonna hit, get the hell out. i was carless and the buses had gone, and 2) they didn't make it a mandatory evac until the night before.

still my decision, but i don't think it's always black and white. i'm just glad sandy didn't do anything to me in the dc region now and i wish the hurricanes would stay away from me.
bent_ley 31st-Oct-2012 01:12 am (UTC)
my cousins stayed because they like adventure i think
sweet_honesty 31st-Oct-2012 03:05 am (UTC)
There were people saying that the evacuation was a conspiracy on Facebook. Ugh.
kriziasupernova 31st-Oct-2012 09:00 am (UTC)
I live in the Philippines, and we have typhoons and floods most of the time. I know people wouldn't leave their homes because they're afraid their stuff would get stolen, or something will happen to their house, like a fire or something. There are designated evacuation centers, but they won't budge. Not all are poor though, most I've seen doing this are from the middle class. I'm guessing it's the same reasons, though when you're stuck on your roof, cold and hungry, most will definitely leave their houses by then.
cheryb 30th-Oct-2012 09:25 pm (UTC)
SOOO... Any word on what the upper part of the island looks like? My grandparents live on west 95th between central park west and columbus.
actrisse 30th-Oct-2012 10:16 pm (UTC)
For the most part it's fine. My grandparents live on 90th and York and are just without power and I have friends who live in Harlem who are fine and have power.
cheryb 30th-Oct-2012 10:30 pm (UTC)
Ok yeah thanks for the update! I'm stuck at work. I'm having my brother call them. We're going there for Thanksgiving.
asnapshot 30th-Oct-2012 10:43 pm (UTC)
i'm on the upper east and we're fine - i'm pretty sure the northern part of the city is (for the most part) okay
sergeantquakers 31st-Oct-2012 12:08 am (UTC)
I'm on 116th and Broadway and it's totally fine. We had high winds and a few weak windows on campus broke but there's no serious damage or flooding. We never even lost power or Internet.
saikaro_x 30th-Oct-2012 09:26 pm (UTC)
How about American Apparel putting on a special Hurricane Sandy sale for states in the Northeast? Pathetic.

hawaii_bombay 30th-Oct-2012 09:37 pm (UTC)
There was a store here in Mexico City, but now it's gone (I never went in though)
whitegirlthin 30th-Oct-2012 11:49 pm (UTC)

snappple 30th-Oct-2012 09:32 pm (UTC)
I didn't believe it too, but many gullible people believed it and kept retweeting it so I thought maybe at least I should confirm with New Yorkers before I believe things.
hearxmexrawr 30th-Oct-2012 09:27 pm (UTC)

withoutyoursmil 30th-Oct-2012 09:29 pm (UTC)
honest to god, he lacks any and all human decency. he really, really does.
saikaro_x 30th-Oct-2012 09:30 pm (UTC)
what a clown. if he had any ounce of integrity he would have announced that he's going to use that $5 mil to donate to relief efforts.
hotcement 30th-Oct-2012 09:30 pm (UTC)
what the fuck does obama have to do with that? maybe you should just donate the $5m, leave obama out of it, and shut the fuck up.
aeryn 30th-Oct-2012 09:30 pm (UTC)
It's gross that he's using this storm to take a personal jab at Obama.

Why doesn't he donate that $5M HIMSELF if he's so goddamn righteous?
actxappalledx 30th-Oct-2012 09:31 pm (UTC)
He is such a disgusting human being, I cannot even
supermishelle 30th-Oct-2012 09:32 pm (UTC)

sweeetkiwi 30th-Oct-2012 09:36 pm (UTC)
lolol he is so fucking annoying
mynamehere07 30th-Oct-2012 09:37 pm (UTC)
I'm sure that thing on his head could soak up a majority of the flood waters.

He needs to sit down, shut up and give the Red Cross that 5 million and be happy that he could hop on his private jet to flee the storm long before it hit.
hypnology 30th-Oct-2012 09:38 pm (UTC)
why doesn't the prick just donate it himself?
kiki3291 30th-Oct-2012 09:40 pm (UTC)
I just can't with him. And people are 'favoring' that fucking tweet? Disgusting.

And I side-eye all celebs who go to his parties or stay at his hotels. That may be overreacting, but idc.
noon 30th-Oct-2012 09:41 pm (UTC)
fuck him for bringing those 17 people into his vendetta against obama
yurasama_love 30th-Oct-2012 09:43 pm (UTC)
This bitch, donate it yourself.
stylista_11 30th-Oct-2012 09:43 pm (UTC)
WHAT THE FUCK
hpxstac 30th-Oct-2012 09:49 pm (UTC)
Yeah he's pretty vile. Although I have to admit that I love how no one takes him seriously anymore. The press is done with that clown, thank god.
timbershiver 30th-Oct-2012 09:52 pm (UTC)
OH NO HE FUCKING DIDN'T SERIOUSLY?
angelmonster 30th-Oct-2012 10:00 pm (UTC)
Stfu I hope someone cuts that ugly comb over you wear. I don't see your ass donating, bitch.
venetianglass 30th-Oct-2012 10:05 pm (UTC)

ciara_belle 30th-Oct-2012 10:12 pm (UTC)
Or how about you just donate it to disaster relief yourself, Donald?

Donald should also stop talking forever.
aleksie 30th-Oct-2012 10:13 pm (UTC)
The fact that's where his mind went during this storm just adds to my theory that he has some creepy, obsessive, school kid crush on Obama.
stormer1_1 30th-Oct-2012 10:26 pm (UTC)
Or maybe you should do it your damn toupeed self, you lazy walking poster boy for entitled white prats?
nimberlane 30th-Oct-2012 10:31 pm (UTC)
maybe he should shut the fuck up
x_butterfly19_x 30th-Oct-2012 10:44 pm (UTC)
I never really noted Donald Trump before watching the 'You've been Trumped' documentary last week, and since then it's been a constant stream of his awfulness in the media.
My timing.
anddot 30th-Oct-2012 10:54 pm (UTC)
or maybe you could donate it, shitbag
jsrocks 30th-Oct-2012 10:58 pm (UTC)
Why doesn't HE donate HIS $5M to the families of the 17 who lost loved ones during the storm?

He needs bitch-slapped like whoa.
whitegirlthin 30th-Oct-2012 11:49 pm (UTC)
Fucking old cunt
hippie_chick 31st-Oct-2012 01:33 am (UTC)
Side eyeing the 145 people who re tweeted that and the 64 that "favorited" it. UGH TRUMP STFU.
sweet_honesty 31st-Oct-2012 03:07 am (UTC)
Or maybe he should.
kriziasupernova 31st-Oct-2012 09:04 am (UTC)
maybe he should shut up and sit the fuck down. ugh, this fucking asshole.
slurp 31st-Oct-2012 06:38 pm (UTC)
What an asshole. A lot of people have been tweeting with #ThanksDonald in an attempt to shame him into donating anyway.
preflyer 30th-Oct-2012 09:27 pm (UTC)
even though I'm in western mass, and everything was pretty much fine for us, just high winds and rain, i'm trying to avoid all hurricane coverage. it's just making me sad and thinking about my ex in nyc. :(
bioshe 30th-Oct-2012 10:02 pm (UTC)
I hear ya.... I heard about the 29 yr old in Flushing Queens that got hit by a tree while laying in bed and I immediately thought of my ex and started crying last night.
