Mission Impossible 5 - Already In Progress?

Another ‘Mission: Impossible’ film once looked like it might never happen. After Tom Cruise‘s well-publicized couch-jumping era, Paramount ended their deal with Cruise and issued a statement saying, “His recent conduct has not been acceptable to Paramount.” The studio wanted to reboot the franchise with a younger star to take over for Cruise (enter: Jeremy Renner) but ‘Ghost Protocol’ was a big hit and now Cruise is talking about returning ‘Mission: Impossible 5′ and even a “bunch” more installments.

Paramount and Tom Cruise have repaired their relationship (they even have the action film ‘Jack Reacher‘ coming later this year) and it looks like that repaired relationship will lead to multiple new ‘Mission: Impossible’ films. Cruise was asked about the future of the franchise and told Total Film:

"I started ‘Mission: Impossible’ hoping I could make many of them. It’s a character that I can grow with. It’s been pretty exciting. I’ll make a bunch of those. I’ll make as many as people want to see…We’re already working on different images [for the fifth film]. Talking conceptually. I’m always looking at different places…I look at architecture, subways… coming up with different sequences."

As stated earlier, Jeremy Renner was thought to be cast to be the heir-apparent to Cruise. But ‘Ghost Protocol’ wasn’t just a hit, it was Cruise’s biggest film and began a career (and image) resurgence for the actor. So now it looks like Cruise will be a very integral part of the franchise going forward as he shows no signs of slowing down.

Jeremy Renner is only 9 years younger than Tom Cruise so it's not that big of a difference... And Renner already has enough roles going on. As much as I hated the first few MI films, Ghost Protocol was probably one of my favorite brainless action movies. Just keep Simon Pegg in it too and I'll be happy.
