i just discovered sandy's a category one.
my goodness the way these people are talking about it i thought it was a 3 or 4.
reginageorge 29th-Oct-2012 01:38 am (UTC)
have you seen the reports tho.. pretty much every news station is saying to not focus on the category of the storm because it is going to be extremely damaging regardless.

/bitter bc texas doesnt ever get shit
deja_vu822 29th-Oct-2012 01:40 am (UTC)
i think a lot of it is that it's hitting areas not used to hurricanes and normally not prepared for them. and also the wind/amount of rain is going to be damaging and i also thought there was another storm system coming from the west that it was going to mingle with once it hits land.
isuspectnargels 29th-Oct-2012 01:40 am (UTC)
yea but there's another major storm coming from the NW that's supposed to hit around the same time sooo
sugarcrawler 29th-Oct-2012 01:40 am (UTC)
mte after reading that 65 deaths have occurred i was like :O
usually cat 1s are like mild storms but i guess rn its different
bungalowtick 29th-Oct-2012 01:50 am (UTC)
i stand corrected. i need to brush up on my hurricane knowledge.
i_heart_pizza 29th-Oct-2012 03:04 pm (UTC)
D: jeez a hurricane colliding with a snow storm sounds like something out of that 2012 movie. Stay safe east coasters
deethy 29th-Oct-2012 01:41 am (UTC)
a cat 1 can be very damaging tho? like irene was mostly a tropical storm by the time it hit the east coast and it's still the 5th costliest hurricane ever, more than Hurricane Charley, which was a cat 4 and Hurricane Ivan, which was a cat 5
avilewoman 29th-Oct-2012 01:41 am (UTC)
CAT1s aren't too bad in places where houses are built to withstand them. IDK what the building codes are like in the NE, but if it dumps a lot of rain, I can only imagine what the NY subway system will look like once the storm passes.
oblika_farika 29th-Oct-2012 01:44 am (UTC)
the hype really has nothing to do with any kind of hurricane category - its a moot point. ive read that if this was a normal storm with a normal eye it would be 3 or 4.
twowaymirrrors 29th-Oct-2012 01:45 am (UTC)
Yeah, but you're talking about an area that doesn't normally get hurricanes, or even tropical storms, at all so nothing here is really built to withstand them. I mean, last year telephone poles snapped in half and Irene was only a tropical storm at that point. Plus there's another storm moving in from the west that's going to mix with this one which is what is going to make it worse.

But even without that storm it'd be bad just because the Northeast isn't equipped for any extreme storm that isn't a snowstorm.
sugary_placenta 29th-Oct-2012 01:46 am (UTC)
i felt the strong winds when it was making its way up from cuba/the carribean and i am on the west coast of florida. regardless of the category it seems pretty strong and i'm glad i'm not caught in the middle of it.
judgmental 29th-Oct-2012 02:12 am (UTC)
it's merging with a fucking snowstorm so
ride_my_rage 29th-Oct-2012 09:24 am (UTC)
Personally, I think the whole category system is ridiculous. Case in point: I live in Okinawa and we're finishing our typhoon season. The last one we had (Jelawat) was a C2 and was stronger and caused so much more damage than the previous two combined, which were C4 (Bolaven and Sanba).
