"The Night Gwen Stacy Died" + Shailene Woodley confirmed as Mary Jane.

Last week, we reported that Shailene Woodley was in talks to play Mary Jane Watson inAmazing Spider-Man 2. Well, now we know who'll be playing MJ, as well as which classic Spider-Man story they're currently building their movies toward.

Just as reported, it looks like Woodley will be playing a small part in the sequel as MJ, and will play an even bigger role in the third film, says THR. So what will happen to Peter Parker/Spider-Man's current love, Gwen Stacy (played by Emma Stone)?

Woodley initially had scheduling issues as an obstacle to the dealmaking, having had offers to play both Mary Jane and the Divergent lead. But the Mary Jane role is proving to be only a very small part in Amazing Spider-Man 2 but blossoms into an integral lead for the planned third movie as the studio seeks to build to the classic "Death of Gwen Stacy" story.

Right when it was announced that the new Spider-Man films would be grittier, darker and feature Gwen as Peter's primary love interest (with no signs of Mary Jane in the first movie), a lot of people were wondering if Sony would be eventually lead their story to the famous "The Night Gwen Stacy Died" arc. Well, I guess now we know that's where they plan on taking the film.

It's not locked that Sony would use this story, but it's definitely where they want to take the story. And I'm sure if this does end up going through fruition, it'll cause just as much buzz as when the story first went into print back in 1973. Oh... and does this mean we'll be getting a new version of Green Goblin? They plan on introducing Harry Osborn, and with that comes his father, Norman, so I can definitely see that happening.

Shailene Woodley

Eh...

I guess we'll see. Can't be worse than Dunst, right?
claudsx 21st-Oct-2012 06:05 pm (UTC)
lol, well when you put it that way...
gabzillaz 21st-Oct-2012 06:09 pm (UTC)
I don't know much about this girl, but she deserves a prize if she manages to do a worse MJ.
reunionfan 21st-Oct-2012 06:06 pm (UTC)
what?

Dunst >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Woodley
rogue 21st-Oct-2012 07:38 pm (UTC)
As bad as Dunst.
niagarawoman 21st-Oct-2012 08:40 pm (UTC)
You know, as inappropriate as Dunst was for MJ in the Raimi series, I always appreciated how three-dimensional and human the character itself was. That she had a life outside of Peter and that we got to see it. Much, much more than we got out of this movie's Gwen Stacy.
la_oceane 21st-Oct-2012 05:59 pm (UTC)
WAT I am nhf that age difference. I liked her in The Descendants but she looks her age and you can tell Andrew is in his late 20s....

actually I think I just realized the issue here is how old Andrew is. I can't admit that he is the problem.

MTE. On the bright side, if there's gonna be Peter/MJ happening at the end of the third movie, there's plenty of time for her hormones to finish their job.
trixx_r4_kidz 21st-Oct-2012 08:39 pm (UTC)
This is one of the reasons I'm really disappointed by the casting. I have no problem with her as an actress (I have never seen SLoAT), but I don't believe they will have chemistry at all. I watched her clips in TD again and it was really weird to imagine her as someone AG would date. I hope that wasn't her real, speaking voice too. Ick. Make me believe Andrew, make me believe.
la_oceane 21st-Oct-2012 08:42 pm (UTC)
EXACTLY. I just don't see it.
lostinshalott 21st-Oct-2012 08:44 pm (UTC)
these were my first thoughts, she still seems rather young.
hera_bearrra 21st-Oct-2012 08:50 pm (UTC)
That's the main problem I have with her. Also, I don't see her playing ~sexy~ so I'm assuming they're going with a wholesome, non-sexy MJ in the movie.
teaaet 21st-Oct-2012 05:59 pm (UTC)
can we please just shelve the endless batman, superman, and spiderman remakes, and make one epic matt bomer superman film?

darkwarrior 21st-Oct-2012 06:13 pm (UTC)
Basically its not gonna stop any time soon.

WB owns DC and Batman is there only guaranteed property, even Superman cannot pull BAtman numbers and he cannot translate at all to things like video games where Batman can translate to anything. They tried with Green Lantern and you saw how that went (Although that's also to do with them thinking it is 1993 and they can make that stupid shit like the last 20 years didn't happen). So they will keep making Batman, with or without Nolan until they destroy the brand.

Marvel on the other hand, has no say in Spider-Man, Sony HAD to make the film or lose the rights back to Marvel, so they churned out this piece of shit to hold on to them because theydon't want to lose the rights to a series that will make money however bad it is.

To be fair, Superman hasn't had afilm for a long time until Returns which was a sequel to those films. This is a reboot, again to hold onto the rights as I understand it since Superman's creators' families are fighting to regain the rights.
somniumdraconae 21st-Oct-2012 11:23 pm (UTC)
I thought the main purpose of the Amazing Spiderman reboot was so the story arc could ultimately fit into the Avengers universe?
hemsworth 21st-Oct-2012 11:02 pm (UTC)

false_hate 21st-Oct-2012 06:01 pm (UTC)
I feel like Woodley and Garfield are going to have more platonic/familial than romantic chemistry.

Poor Stacy family, so much ~loss.
sowhat_whocares 21st-Oct-2012 07:16 pm (UTC)
probably because Garfield is gonna be 30 by the time they film the 3rd one, and Woodley is not only like, 19, but she looks 15.
nationalboner 21st-Oct-2012 07:42 pm (UTC)
They look like siblings, imo, anyway.

Not sure about the casting, but definitely liking the But the Mary Jane role is proving to be only a very small part in Amazing Spider-Man 2. Hopefully it stays like this & for once the movie makers stay out of a potential love triangle.
tankmachine 21st-Oct-2012 06:08 pm (UTC)
yeah it makes sense

introduce her in the second one and then hook her up w/ Peter in the third

Ive never seen any of the spiderman movies and i dont know hi story regarding MJ and gwen, but this girl comes off as annoyed in everything ive seen her in. I am not sure if thats what spiderman is looking for.
smileyjoe222 21st-Oct-2012 06:03 pm (UTC)
For Mary Jane? Really? And the age difference...
simplychristina 21st-Oct-2012 06:16 pm (UTC)
The real problem is, they should've hired a younger actor. By the time there is a third film, Andrew will be Luke Perry-ing it.
advo 21st-Oct-2012 06:29 pm (UTC)
Andrew Garfield looks pretty young for his age though. The problem is that so does Shailene!
evett 21st-Oct-2012 06:46 pm (UTC)
I said the same thing since Shailene is 20/21 until I looked up Emma Stone's age. I thought she was closer to 30 like Andrew not 23/24.
winegums 22nd-Oct-2012 12:50 am (UTC)
Maguire and Dunst had a 7-year age gap between them in the Raimi films too, and by the third one you could REALLY tell how laughable it was to be passing them off as the same age - I fear mk. II of that situation here.
