Taylor Swift Won't Talk Politics

Photobucket

Country superstar Taylor Swift has no interest in getting political, despite the fact that she's dating a member of the most famous family in American politics. In a new interview with Time, the country pop superstar was asked if she'd been following the presidential election race.

"I follow it, and I try to keep myself as educated and informed as possible," Taylor acknowledged. "But I don't talk about politics because it might influence other people. And I don't think that I know enough in life to be telling people to vote for."

Swift isn't the first star to play mum when it comes to politics: Kid Rock lambasted celebrities who voiced their political opinions back in 2008, telling CMT Insider, "I truly believe that people like myself, who are in a position of entertainers in the limelight, should keep their mouth shut on politics." He's since changed his tune, and is now one of the entertainment industry's most vocal Republicans.

Taylor's decision to keep quiet is rather shrewd: Country music fans tend to have conservative leanings (remember the Dixie Chicks?), so a political endorsement could be very bad for business.

So she's voting for Romney then. Just when I think I couldn't find her more obnoxious.....
carryyourheart 21st-Oct-2012 02:23 pm (UTC)
lol what

how does not talking about it = voting for Romney
rainbow_fish 21st-Oct-2012 02:26 pm (UTC)
Her holier than thou attitude + general floppiness + money = Romney's key demographic.

(Really though, normally when people say "Oh I don't like to talk about politics" it's usually because they have some flop ass opinions and don't wanna have to use their brains and think about logic and facts that would change their world view)
georgie_georgie 21st-Oct-2012 02:28 pm (UTC)
yup.
ebertrules 21st-Oct-2012 02:50 pm (UTC)
it sounds more like she doesn't want to alienate her base. you know, people who listen to country music.
megalixer 21st-Oct-2012 02:52 pm (UTC)
If anything, it makes me assume she's voting for Obama. I assume a large portion of her fanbase, probably the majority even, is Republican/conservative; take that and the fact that she's dating a Kennedy into account - I think she'd have more of a motive to be silent about her political views if she's voting Dem. than if she's voting for Romney.
fred2265 21st-Oct-2012 04:22 pm (UTC)
True....
saray677 21st-Oct-2012 05:13 pm (UTC)
I actually thought this means she's voting for Obama but doesn't want to lose all of the republican country music fans.
wownow 21st-Oct-2012 06:46 pm (UTC)
she voted for obama in 2008 (as admitted to rolling stone), supports lgbt rights, loves abraham lincoln and is fucking a kennedy.

and she most definitely did not perform at a GOP convention, ever.

69love_songs 21st-Oct-2012 02:26 pm (UTC)
Who is she going to influence, really?!?!
anchors_oceans 21st-Oct-2012 02:33 pm (UTC)
that's true lol. her fan base is nowhere near the voting age.
carryyourheart 21st-Oct-2012 02:46 pm (UTC)
lol are you joking?
briknowsbest 21st-Oct-2012 02:49 pm (UTC)
Not true at all. Lol.
x_rose_tyler_x 21st-Oct-2012 02:33 pm (UTC)
If famous people didn't have any influence on what people are going to vote, then there wouldn't be all these celebrity-filled "Vote for X campaigns"
wownow 21st-Oct-2012 07:24 pm (UTC)
whether you like her or not, she does have influence over a section of the population.
ballsonthat 21st-Oct-2012 02:33 pm (UTC)
If someone is influenced by what Taylor Swift thinks, they probably aren't old enough to vote.
last_archangel 21st-Oct-2012 02:42 pm (UTC)
That's how I feel on anyone influenced by ANY celebrity, regardless of political affiliation.
draion 21st-Oct-2012 06:04 pm (UTC)
Same.
wristtattoos 22nd-Oct-2012 12:23 am (UTC)
i agree
cimarosa 21st-Oct-2012 02:34 pm (UTC)
Girl, just remember you're still on that Barely Legal Scion of Democratic Dynasty stuff.
cimarosa 21st-Oct-2012 02:36 pm (UTC)
By "stuff" I mean "dick".
lisse_pitch13 21st-Oct-2012 07:26 pm (UTC)
Happy Birthday Ken.
bondagebarbiee 21st-Oct-2012 02:35 pm (UTC)
Let ONTD hate her for something else that some of you all criticize for celebrities doing on twitter like talking about politics. Take Stacey Dash saying she was voting for Romney, you all said celebrities shouldn't tell people their stance yet Taylor is going to be hated for not saying anything. My god, you people are so fucking hypocritical.
deltabean 21st-Oct-2012 02:44 pm (UTC)
iawtc
carryyourheart 21st-Oct-2012 02:48 pm (UTC)
when it comes to Taylor ontd are the biggest hypocrites.

My favourite are the posts in which she gets called a slut shamer while people slut shame her.
mondengel 22nd-Oct-2012 09:19 pm (UTC)
I agree.
wthplz 22nd-Oct-2012 11:52 pm (UTC)
yes
subterranean_ca 21st-Oct-2012 02:48 pm (UTC)
Thank you! Just about to post this.

I find it refreshing that someone is not trying to push their politics in my face. I'm voting for Obama, but I don't really talk to much about politics with people, even if they say they are voting the same because it can get messy.
mynamehere07 21st-Oct-2012 02:52 pm (UTC)
I was thinking the exact same thing.

In fact I was going to come in here and say "Finally an ounce of sense from an unlikely source."

But then I saw the first few comments. Welp, what are you gonna do? *shrug*
megalixer 21st-Oct-2012 02:53 pm (UTC)
IA. I don't particularly like Taylor but this statement is beyond harmless.
rainbow_fish 21st-Oct-2012 02:53 pm (UTC)
Nope, let celebs talk about politics all they want imo. Let's me know who to judge
vampireweekend 21st-Oct-2012 02:56 pm (UTC)
lol yep
anchors_oceans 21st-Oct-2012 02:58 pm (UTC)
i totally agree. i hate when celebs i like talk about politics, especially if i don't agree with their views. it kind of bums me out.

but i hate taylor so... i'll just continue to hate.
justpeachythnks 21st-Oct-2012 03:02 pm (UTC)

well they're just assuming she's voting for romney so that's why they're bitching
these_eyes_lie 21st-Oct-2012 04:35 pm (UTC)
Exaaaactly. I'm not a big fan of Taylor, but this is a really smart move on her part. And the way she worded it was perfect.
cabernet 21st-Oct-2012 04:45 pm (UTC)
FUCKING THIS. I'm not a fan but good fucking god, I really respect her answer to this question and I'm amazed how people are still finding a way to talk shit about her
kstew 21st-Oct-2012 05:33 pm (UTC)
lol mte, and this is coming from someone who can't stand taylor swift
lidahbidah 21st-Oct-2012 05:49 pm (UTC)
As soon as I saw the first few comments, this is exactly what I was going to post.
draion 21st-Oct-2012 06:05 pm (UTC)
Why are you bringing rationality here?!
talklikelions 21st-Oct-2012 06:50 pm (UTC)
SERIOUSLY.

And anyone that knows anything about her should know that she's really liberal in how she thinks, her whole family is. Just bc she won't talk about it, doesn't mean she's trying to avoid being ~hated for the candidate she likes- it means she doesn't want to fucking talk about it.

ugh.
wristtattoos 22nd-Oct-2012 12:24 am (UTC)
ikr? she tries to take the high road and avoid it all and people still find a way to criticize her for it smh. obama fans just like hearing that celebs want to vote for obama.
matineelove 21st-Oct-2012 02:36 pm (UTC)
I think her not talking about it is wise actually...she gets alot of shit for trivial stuff as it is, I can't imagine the grief either side would give her is she said anything about politics.
m_h_p 21st-Oct-2012 02:39 pm (UTC)
Is she allowed to express opinions on anything?

It seems like she's contractually obliged to alienate as few people as possible.
angelmonster 21st-Oct-2012 02:42 pm (UTC)
anchors_oceans 21st-Oct-2012 03:01 pm (UTC)
YES. i understand that break ups are horrible but i have a hard time believing that swift has done nothing wrong.
carryyourheart 21st-Oct-2012 03:02 pm (UTC)
Why is it that women can never be the victims? Joe Jonas, jake gyllenhaal, and john mayer are known assholes and you all think so when he's dating one of your favs if he even dates them so why is it so impossible for her to be the victim in those relationships? when she dated taylor lautner she wrote an apology song for him where she wasn't the victim at all but people seem to forget that.

there are a lot of her songs that aren't about breakups you people are just too pathetic and biased to notice

some people just date a lot of shitty people

toaerythinness 21st-Oct-2012 03:03 pm (UTC)
I don't think using Taylor Swift as your feminist spirit animal is really a good idea. She just kinda sucks.
angelmonster 21st-Oct-2012 03:04 pm (UTC)
First off it is obviously a joke, calm the fuck down.

Second, calm the fuck down. It has absolutely nothing to do with her being a woman. It has to do with her breaking up with multiple people and writing songs about all of them.

Thirdly you are taking an ecard way too seriously, google them and laugh.
xtinkerbellax 21st-Oct-2012 03:20 pm (UTC)
Jake is a known asshole?
hungthem00n 22nd-Oct-2012 09:46 pm (UTC)
uhhhhh she's the one who decided to date them though? why must she ALWAYS play the victim. there are so many people out there who have gone through tons more shit than she has and they don't play the victim. she needs to own up to her decisions...

and i listen to all of her songs and understand she writes about more, but shes made her millions off of breakup songs, lbr...
fierysadness 21st-Oct-2012 03:07 pm (UTC)
Um, Joe Jonas basically broke up with her over the phone, he deserves whatever "nasty break up song" she wrote about him.
John Mayer, 'nuff said.
The only song she wrote about Taylor Lautner (IIRC) was not a "nasty break up song" at all.
fireprince 21st-Oct-2012 02:46 pm (UTC)
Translation: I'm know a lot of my fans are probably racist, but I want their money so I'm gonna keep my mouth shut and get those coins. A DOLLA MAKE ME HOLLA!
publicfrenemy 21st-Oct-2012 03:52 pm (UTC)
I'm actually impressed by her savvy.

Liberals will think she's a liberal in the country music scene so she's staying quiet. Conservatives will think she's a conservative in hollywood so she's staying quiet. Everybody will think she's on their side.

I find her annoying, but she's got smarts. Now she just needs to stop shopping at Mod Cloth and I might start liking her.
nathanandbarry 21st-Oct-2012 06:31 pm (UTC)
lol true.

I'm most likely not going to start liking her though. It's funny I used to LOVE T. Swift.
fireprince 21st-Oct-2012 07:35 pm (UTC)
Honestly I think she's insanely smart, more so than people give her credit for. I still find her insufferable but I can't knock her dedication and business savvy.
expromqueen 21st-Oct-2012 04:22 pm (UTC)
basically. i think she probably supports obama cause i'm sure all her friends do & most of hollywood does. but if i was lucky enough to be a celeb and to be able to talk to millions of ppl i would definitely support obama publicly...it's not in my nature to keep my opinions to myself lol
ugly_jacket 21st-Oct-2012 02:47 pm (UTC)
the one part of the entertainment industry that votes repub is probably country music, she's just trying to play smart by not alienating a lot of the people she might want to collab with
peddlestools 21st-Oct-2012 02:48 pm (UTC)
wait, do white straight men buy taylor swift records, tho? because i read that romney has a strong lead with white straight men in the polls (no surprise there)
toaerythinness 21st-Oct-2012 03:25 pm (UTC)
the Texas A&M frat boys I work with are OBSESSED with Taylor Swift. So weirdly, yes.
sillycucumber 21st-Oct-2012 10:21 pm (UTC)
white boys love them some taylor swift.
toilandblood 21st-Oct-2012 02:50 pm (UTC)
hmm I like whne people can discuss politics respectfully. it's interesting hearing other people's opinions about issues. their views don't really ever reflect mine or influence mine so I don't get what the big deal is.
manu19 21st-Oct-2012 02:53 pm (UTC)
i think its so annoying when celebs tweet about politics 24/7. everyone should do what they want, no need to express their opinion all the time. my parents dont even tell each other what they vote for lol
vampireweekend 21st-Oct-2012 02:57 pm (UTC)
i don't see what's wrong with her keeping it to herself? like said before she wouldn't want to alienate herself from the country crowd if she is voting democrat. some ppl are reaching in this post smh.
lexiesloan 21st-Oct-2012 02:58 pm (UTC)
I know who I am voting for and it's my business. Politic discussions can turn so ugly so quickly and being friends with political science majors in college, I have learned to keep my political thoughts to myself. It's my own private opinion. I wish celebrities would stop trying to shove their opinions down everyone else's throats.
toaerythinness 21st-Oct-2012 03:02 pm (UTC)
Meh, I think everyone's entitled to free speech. If you wanna talk about it, talk about it -- if you don't, don't. Just because they have a wider audience than we do doesn't mean they're trying to shove their opinions on us. They're just talking.

Republicans especially crack me up on this because they are always saying celebrities should shut up about politics; however, when that fake Jake Gyllenhall twitter endorsed Romney the Drudge Report had that shit up, huge, with a pic, all triumphant about it. I lold.
wownow 21st-Oct-2012 07:13 pm (UTC)
i think the extra weight given to celebrities' opinions is depressing. i mean, i don't mind george clooney talking about sudan, for example, because he has expert knowledge but most celebrities know as much as me or you.
robinsparkle 23rd-Oct-2012 10:38 pm (UTC)
I disagree. Even with regular people on facebook, idc if people talk about politics. I'm glad they talk about something of importance for a change and not just the instagram photos of their babies and food.

I guess I just don't see the harm in discussing something so important. I DO, however, see a problem with people who have no idea what they're talking about trying to start shit.
