Queen Mary invites you in.
Finally, Mr Bates is freed from prison, meaning that he can now be reuinited with Anna. The two embrace, and arriving back at Downton, everyone is excited to see him back. That is, of course, everyone but Thomas... [Three valets and only two men in need of a valet! Whatever shall we do? My money is on Molesley going back to Crawley House and Thomas becoming Matthew's valet.]
However, Thomas has bigger things to worry about when he falls into O’Brien’s trap, and sets off on a midnight visit to Jimmy’s room. [OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.]
Elsewhere, Lord Grantham has to face the prospect of baby Sybil’s Catholic christening, which means that Branson's beer-drinking brother is arriving. How will everyone react to him? [lol. I can't believe that time is moving so slowly that we're spending TWO episodes on the christening plot.]
Meanwhile, when his Lordship suggests a woman’s place is in the home, the Dowager offers her support to Edith, who wants to become a journalist. [I am here for journalist!Edith!]

STILL NOT HERE FOR THE LACK OF MARY IN THESE SUMMARIES! (Why yes, I will continue to moan about this until Mary starts getting mentioned in these things.)

For fuck's sake, can this man be more of a flop? But I'm totally ready for Edith having a career.

Flopbert continues to suck. I'm glad Violet is gonna support Edith.

Thomas/hottie new footman who gets brought in when Jimmy gets fired for ~reasons and who is actually into Thomas' super awkward flirting = OTP.
I am so scared for him
You just lost a daughter because of your bonehead logic, maybe it is time to start letting other people decide on things that direct affect their lives.

poor boo, i just want to give her a hug
This will only end in tears.
is that too much?
Also Flopbert continues to be a terrible father, gets one daugther killed, wants another to be miserable and not follow her dreams.

IA WITH YOUR COMMENTARY, OP. DDD8 I was wondering why she was all "what are you implying?" in the last ep rather than just ratting him out, since she ~vowed to destroy~ him and all, but I guess she was just biding her time until Thomas did something really forward. GODDAMMIT, even my platonic OTPs are doomed to misery and failure. I am a curse. *hangs head*
AND IT HURTS, PRECIOUS. Thomas has had enough of a shitty life already.
Oh, come on, Fellowes, nobody is buying this shit. The fact that Bates is the actual worst aside, literally nobody in that house other than Anna and maybe Flopbert give a fuck. Except Thomas and O'Brien, who rightfully hated him from the start. I'm sorry I ever doubted you, DATS. :(
Also, the fact that the only descriptor Branson's brother gets is "beer-drinking" is making me laugh. Bad luck, Branson's brother. JF was always going to hate you on principle.

Remember last season when every second word out of everybody's mouth was about how marvellous Bates was? And when Lang couldn't serve and Carson had that bullshit line about "Oh, Mr Bates, where are you when we need you?"? Even though Bates couldn't wait at table anyway?
Season two is the season when it becomes incredibly obvious that the noble martyr act is literally all he is capable of. And that he will do it at Anna's expense for all of eternity. How was anybody still on his side? What a violent, obnoxious, self-involved blight of a human being.
God, I hope it comes out that he killed his wife. Sorry about all your detective work, Anna, but I'm really hoping you're just the world's worst sleuth. #hangbates2012
I bet it'd be brilliant to rewatch season two and assume anytime anyone says anything about how wonderful Bates is, they're being deadpan sarcastic. Like, what Carson was doing there was cheering himself up that, even though Lang couldn't serve, at least they didn't have that useless Mr. Bates hanging around and fucking things up and then being a martyr about that shit in the mopiest way possible.
