Shailene Woodley To Play Tris In 'Divergent'?



We've been riding the "Divergent" train ever since Veronica Roth's electrifying debut hit bookstore shelves last year, and now we're finally making our first stop in Casting Junction for the big-screen adaptation!

Deadline reports that "Secret Life of the American Teenager" star Shailene Woodley is in talks to play teen heroine Tris Prior.

For the uninitiated, "Divergent" takes place in a near-future Chicago in which society is divided into five factions, representing different virtues (eg. selflessness, courage, etc.). All 16-year-olds must take a test to determine whether they will join Abnegation, Erudite, Dauntless, Amity or Candor. The second novel in Veronica's series, "Insurgent," debuted May 2012.

Though Shailene was not among our casting picks for Tris, we can definitely envision her jumping from a speeding locomotive (even if she's not a petite blonde). And after a star-making turn in "The Descendants," we more than happy to vouch for her acting chops.

Miss Woodley has been at the center of a number of casting rumors since it was announced that "Secret Life" was in its final season. Among those roles is the plum part of Mary Jane Watson in "Spider-Man 2."

"Divergent" is slated to hit theaters March 21, 2014.

it's a nice bedtime book, by which it means you can sleep through it all and still come out knowing generally what it's about.

That is, if you're not too busy raging over how bad it is.

I know next to nothing about the series other than it's some futuristic bullshit, so I don't really understand why THG fandom is so supportive of it. Are there any similarities between the two series?

to me the most interesting parts of Divergent were ~borrowed from THG......... also I think fans just like making fanart with the mockingjay/factions logos for the two fandoms lmao priorities - they have them

The book is awful, Tris is awful, I think Shailene is pretty awful. All around it's a solid choice for a movie that I hope flops but won't because it's Twilight meets Hunger Games with it's horrible, borderline abusive romance and dystopian setting.

divergent was OK...insurgent was pretty hard to sit through. i'm a fan of the hunger games, but ENOUGH of the dystopian novels

i've never seen secret life so do people dislike her because she's a terrible actress or because she was on a terrible show? because didn't she get a lot of awards buzz for that movie with george clooney?

Honestly, she was AWFUL in Secret Life when I first checked out its first season but I was really impressed by her acting in The Descendants (the movie with Clooney).

the show is horrible and the script is so horrible that EVERY SINGLE actor on the show sucks by association. seeing her in the descendants showed me that the script is the problem (+ Molly Ringwald does horrible in the show and she's good in her other films)
