The New York Times Says We’ve Achieved Size Acceptance On TV, Calls Mindy Kaling, Lady Gaga Fat

Ladies – it’s time to celebrate. We are close to achieving a society in which women are no longer judged by their waistline or the number on the scale. A society in which young girls never, ever diet. A society in which fat ladies star on hit TV shows.
Or so the New York Times seems to think.

In a ridiculous article titled “Women On TV Step Off The Scale,” New York Times writer Alessandra Stanley argues that “Self-acceptance has become a new form of defiance on television, especially among younger female comedians.” She backs up her case by listing “overweight” stars who’ve found success on TV, including Molly Tarlov, Lena Dunham, Mindy Kaling, Lady Gaga, Kat Dennings, Christina Hendricks, and Christina Aguilera.

Yeah, you read that right. These women – who may not be thin as most models, but are still thinner than most American woman – are the fatties the New York Times is up in arms about.
The whole article is filled with fat-shaming language: “flab” is used multiple times, and Stanley calls Lena Dunham and Mindy Kaling “seditious” for daring to have “extra pounds.” The article is accompanied by a slideshow titled “Plump and Proud.”

Stanley claims that being fat on TV more shocking than “profanity, obscenity, or intolerance,” and that gaining weight is “the most outrageous stunt Lady Gaga has pulled to date.” Really? More outrageous than wearing a meat dress, performing as her male alter ego Joe Calderone, or hatching from an egg at the Grammys?

If you have any delusions about society’s intense scrutiny of women’s bodies and the unbelievable pressure for women to be thin, just read the New York Times: the fact that it’s newsworthy that a woman of Mindy Kaling's size could dare to be seen on TV is proof that we have so, so, so far to go.

saintssin 17th-Oct-2012 05:32 pm (UTC)
Sadly, a lot of people here probably agree with the article.

People fat shame the fuck out of skinny people here.
vanishingbee 17th-Oct-2012 05:45 pm (UTC)
gaga posting the pictures was about posting pictures of a body she didn't/doesn't find ideal, and embracing it anyway. The ~body revolution~ isn't about the reality of how things look, but rather it's about embracing things that make you insecure/the world picks apart.
pastelward 17th-Oct-2012 07:55 pm (UTC)
it's not just overweight people that struggle with body issues though? i don't get that line of thinking. when women (or men) who have previously struggled with some form of eating disorder finally become comfortable with their bodies the response shouldn't be "you weren't fat anyway, get over it"
ihopeyoushine 17th-Oct-2012 05:13 pm (UTC)
they were talking on enews last night about hollywoods miraculous achievement of their~acceptance~ of curvy women like tina fey

scriptedending 17th-Oct-2012 05:14 pm (UTC)
what in the actual fuck?
ihopeyoushine 17th-Oct-2012 05:18 pm (UTC)
they were lumping her in the same ~curvaceous woman~ category as melissa mccarthy so I was like extra wtf
expromqueen 17th-Oct-2012 05:16 pm (UTC)
tina fey is skinny wtf is our society
lathwen1 17th-Oct-2012 05:31 pm (UTC)
really? lololol
I can't. Specially with E! and their need to always show the hot new workout to burn fat on those don't even have it. ugh

magwildwood 17th-Oct-2012 05:32 pm (UTC)
I don't think that's what they said. They compared Lena Dunham to her, saying that Lena is challenging tv's norms by being naked on camera and choosing not to lose weight, unlike Fey, who lost weight in order to go from behind the scenes to on camera.
zoaster_toaster 17th-Oct-2012 05:41 pm (UTC)
...I love Tina Fey, in what would is she considered "curvy"?
croutonochrist 17th-Oct-2012 05:54 pm (UTC)
LOL right? She's probably like a size 6. Maybe they were thinking about her ~voluptuous booty~.

LOL Tina Fey is curvy?

alchimie_amour 19th-Oct-2012 06:08 am (UTC)
what's wrong with that though? she is curvy. curvy refers to hip waste ratio, not body fat percentage.

The NYTimes never fails with its cringe worthy articles. I remember one about how woman want to ride bikes to look pretty.
stellar_ball 17th-Oct-2012 05:20 pm (UTC)
lol, what!? Every time I'm on my bike I hope no one I know sees me.
sweet_honesty 17th-Oct-2012 05:28 pm (UTC)
Lol same
loveumbrella 17th-Oct-2012 05:28 pm (UTC)
me riding a bike up a hill is not pretty

nor is me riding a bike over the body of whoever said this
nathanandbarry 17th-Oct-2012 06:23 pm (UTC)
what?
scriptedending 17th-Oct-2012 05:13 pm (UTC)
yeah, ok. idts. none of these women are fat.
chihaya19 17th-Oct-2012 05:13 pm (UTC)
fucking ridiculous. didn't bring up melissa mccarthy though??
iloveyou_change 17th-Oct-2012 05:15 pm (UTC)
IA. The only actually large woman in a notable TV role and she isn't even mentioned?
expromqueen 17th-Oct-2012 05:19 pm (UTC)
or rebel

this article basically exists to call not-fat women fat as an example of how ppl now accept fat on tv
fuck_of_nature 17th-Oct-2012 05:38 pm (UTC)
The article actually did bring up Rebel.
magwildwood 17th-Oct-2012 05:49 pm (UTC)
The article brings her up, Rebel Wilson, the woman on drop dead diva. But a big point the article is trying to make is about the emergence of women who don't fit in the typical extremes we've seen on tv or in movies--that is women who are a more typical size or just slightly overweight. They have a quote from the girl from Awkward, saying how she likes that her character gets to express her weight insecurities while only being slightly overweight--for once she isnt representing an extreme. And a quote from Mindy Kaling discusses how stylists hate dressing someone her size (an 8) because they want you to either fit the model-thin look or just be the heavy, "sassy" counterpart. I think this post doesn't really express what the article was about, which was more a critique of how Hollywood has always represented women, not calling these ladies fat.
hypnology 17th-Oct-2012 05:14 pm (UTC)
None of them are all that fat, maybe some extra weight compared to thin models but their sizes are quite fine

That fucking Gaga pic. ugh.
expromqueen 17th-Oct-2012 05:15 pm (UTC)
how is christina applegate considered anything other than thin? i watched her snl ep from last wk and she was so skinny!
between_lights 17th-Oct-2012 05:46 pm (UTC)
christina aguilera
expromqueen 17th-Oct-2012 08:17 pm (UTC)
lol oops
aaameeting 17th-Oct-2012 05:15 pm (UTC)
Christina Aguilera is a size 2. I don't understand why she is being mentioned in this article!
expromqueen 17th-Oct-2012 05:17 pm (UTC)
lol what?! she's not a size 2, that's just not possible (don't play the she's short card)...i don't think xtina is fat, btw. at least not compared to most ppl i encounter on a daily basis
sweet_honesty 17th-Oct-2012 05:18 pm (UTC)
She was a size 2.
indignantindigo 17th-Oct-2012 05:33 pm (UTC)
Even with being short I'm not buying it. She may still be squeezing into size 2 clothing tho.
drunkagron 17th-Oct-2012 06:31 pm (UTC)
She's not the same girl that was in your icon
saltonmycuts 17th-Oct-2012 07:22 pm (UTC)
LMAO in what? she's def not a size 2 in anything.
xtinkerbellax 17th-Oct-2012 05:15 pm (UTC)
The girl from Awkward lost weight from the first season, but I love how bigger than a 0/2 is considered "bigger".
ride_the_jitney 17th-Oct-2012 05:53 pm (UTC)
even in the first season she never struck me as being fst. I was actually really annoyed that her weight was one of the main plot points for her character. I thought it was just gonna be that she was the ~sassy, popular villain and then they were like OH AND SHE'S FAT TOO. LOOK. and I was like wut?
croutonochrist 17th-Oct-2012 05:59 pm (UTC)
Yeah, she definitely has. She never really seemed fat to me or even chubby. She's just tall with a bigger build.

What's even funnier is they constantly talked about her being ~fat~, but no one really seemed to bring up Jenna chunking up.
xtinkerbellax 17th-Oct-2012 06:07 pm (UTC)
Yea, I thought it was funny Molly lost weight but the girl that plays Jenna looked so bloated this season.
miss_kate18 18th-Oct-2012 10:36 am (UTC)
I never even thought she was fat. She's obviously quite tall and a normal size for her height.
I'm a tall woman and that stuff makes me rage, especially when people go on about Khloe Kardashian like she's some kind of giant fat monster. Bitch is shorter than I am.
jacomus 17th-Oct-2012 11:09 pm (UTC)
There's plenty wrong with being fat, but I agree that none of these women are.
stellar_ball 17th-Oct-2012 05:18 pm (UTC)
That Molly girl is supposed to be considered "heavier"? Hm.
xtinkerbellax 17th-Oct-2012 05:19 pm (UTC)
She looked "chubby" on camera the first season of the show she was on but has since lost weight, IDK if they dropped her weight storyline the second season.
x_rose_tyler_x 17th-Oct-2012 05:21 pm (UTC)
She wasn't even that chubby on season 1. She's super tall, if she got any more tiny than she is it'd look bad tbh.
x_rose_tyler_x 17th-Oct-2012 05:19 pm (UTC)
Why is it for many people that round face = fat? Like seriously some these girls have "skinny" bodies, they just have chubby faces and that makes them look bigger but they're probably skinnier than they look.

Edited at 2012-10-17 05:20 pm (UTC)
fuckmyass 17th-Oct-2012 05:53 pm (UTC)
yep, that's me. I'm a sz 6 but 5'9" and my face is so chub :( I've even looked up LIPO OF THE FACE.
croutonochrist 17th-Oct-2012 06:01 pm (UTC)
Ugh, I've lived my whole life with a skinny body and a round face.
x_rose_tyler_x 17th-Oct-2012 06:05 pm (UTC)
I think round faces are beautiful tbh, I'm a mixture between oval/round and I like that I can pull off many haircuts, lol
diosabellissima 17th-Oct-2012 07:52 pm (UTC)
bb, this is going to suit you well as you age, don't forget that.

Like the saying goes-- there comes a time when a woman has to choose between her waist and her face. A little fat in the cheeks will make you look much, much younger than all your friends.
arcadiaego 17th-Oct-2012 08:09 pm (UTC)
Let's form a support group bb.
xcollsangelx 17th-Oct-2012 06:18 pm (UTC)
That's exactly me.
kukamine 17th-Oct-2012 07:20 pm (UTC)
I don't have a round face (more like round/oval) but I have naturally big cheeks so it gives the illusion of giving me a big, round face and I hate it lol. Granted, I'm not a skinny minny but I don't like it when I gain weight because it becomes very noticeable on my face.

helders 17th-Oct-2012 10:27 pm (UTC)
also big boobs. there is NOTHING fat abt kat dennings, but i notice women who have bigger breasts are often viewed as fat.
expromqueen 17th-Oct-2012 05:22 pm (UTC)
and now the article is no longer accepting comments lol
dracopet 17th-Oct-2012 06:01 pm (UTC)
They must have read the ones they got
limalemon 17th-Oct-2012 05:24 pm (UTC)
Kat Dennings fat? I hate this society so much...
browniecakemix 17th-Oct-2012 06:00 pm (UTC)
I mean, sure, except Kat Dennings's "fat" is like 90% boobs.
