DC Comics Post: New 52 Sees Four Cancellations In January

New 52 Four Title Cancellations

DC released their solicitations for January today, giving us a complete list of previews for the month and in a few cases announced final issues. This isn’t some new method of surprise, really, DC has done this with both the second and wave of New 52 books. They bring a few books to an end to replace them; Blackhawks, Hawk and Dove, Static Shock, Men of War, Mr. Terrific, and O.M.A.C. all ended to make way for Ravagers, Earth 2, Worlds Finest, Batman Inc, Dial H, and GI Combat. Come the next wave we saw the ends of JLI, Captain Atom, Resurrection Man, and Voodoo to make way for Talon, Swords of Sorcery, Phantom Stranger, and Team 7.

In other words, DC has a method that has been working for them. End some books that are either not working in terms of sales, or that have reached a conclusion, and then you pump in new ideas and creators to fill the created gap.

In January we’ll be seeing the final issues of Blue Beetle, Legion Lost, Frankenstein, and Grifter.

Justice League of America is set to start in February, which makes one of the replacement titles announced. The other is the recently announced Keith Giffen title, Threshold, which is going to be all cosmicy and include a new Green Lantern as a lead character. I wouldn’t be surprised to see DC stay mum for another several weeks about the other two. Pacing things out to time the reveals up with the release of the February solicits.

My guesses? A new Edge title and a new Dark title. Captialize on Wildstorm and find somewhere to keep pushing the Daemonite plot forward with Grifter and Voodoo gone, and maybe find some new Dark title to spin out of Rotworld. The timing is right.

Now, the Snyder/Lee Man of Steel book I’m imagine we won’t see until next summer, and my gut is telling me WildC.A.T.S. next fall or winter, but DC has been doing a great job of not telegraphing new books in advance.

I mean, I wouldn’t have expected a Talon ongoing, or Phantom Stranger, hell, don’t get me started on Sword of Sorcery.

Mostly disappointed about Frankenstein because that's actually a really awesome book ):

Blue Beetle should have been canceled a long time ago, though.

I actually liked Frankenstein a lot, of what I have read so far. Partly for his hot wife tbh. Alas.

I recently got into Marvel comics and tried to cross over into DC with the new 52... the only titles I could stand were Animal Man and Catwoman (as terrible as it may be)
loveuploud bring back dc nation16th-Oct-2012 11:24 pm (UTC)
kind of on topic, but there's a petition going around for cartoon network to bring back dc nation and it only needs a few hundred more signatures!
miuratenshi Re: bring back dc nation16th-Oct-2012 11:30 pm (UTC)
I signed it a couple of days ago! I'm so happy that it's doing so well.

And there are a couple of signatures that made me lol such as:

Dick Grayson: My ass needs more screentime. This is unacceptable.
Stephanie Brown: So DC Nation and I have something in common, huh?
loveuploud Re: bring back dc nation16th-Oct-2012 11:31 pm (UTC)
those signatures are some of my favorites as well! seriously cartoon network, dick's ass needs way more screen time!
fwee_prower Re: bring back dc nation17th-Oct-2012 12:23 am (UTC)
wait what happened to DC nation
gabzillaz Re: bring back dc nation17th-Oct-2012 01:28 am (UTC)
No more episodes till January.

And it came back from a hiatus two weeks ago.
fwee_prower Re: bring back dc nation17th-Oct-2012 01:38 am (UTC)
oh i didn't know i watched last weeks episode online.
gabzillaz Re: bring back dc nation17th-Oct-2012 01:47 am (UTC)
Yeah, they announced that the episodes that were supposed to be broadcasted on Saturday would be replaced by the HTTYD cartoon... on Friday night. Then they said that there are no more episodes till January. Not even the GLTAS producer knew. iTunes didn't get the memo and released them anyway, but pulled them shortly after.

This also fucked with all the shorts that were going to be released on Saturday.
prophecypro Re: bring back dc nation17th-Oct-2012 08:12 am (UTC)
They're only off for a month, people acting like they threw the whole block into the purgatory bushes never to be seen again. They're coming back right?
bagelsvswaffles 16th-Oct-2012 11:29 pm (UTC)
They could of done something so much better with this reboot but they didn't take the opportunity.
apple_fries 16th-Oct-2012 11:31 pm (UTC)
i read Wonder Woman Vol. 1: Blood (The New 52) at work the other day (i work at bn and it was a dead day) and it was so good. i used to only really like marvel comics but this one was srsly great.
artpopart 16th-Oct-2012 11:35 pm (UTC)
They're trying to save Catwoman by putting a new creative team in place after Judd Winick fucked it up.

The 16s look cool!

gabzillaz 17th-Oct-2012 01:29 am (UTC)
Ann Nocenti

And for what I've seen... not doing a very good job at it.
gabzillaz 17th-Oct-2012 01:48 am (UTC)
Judge for yourself :/
loveisdesire 16th-Oct-2012 11:45 pm (UTC)
I don't read Blue Beetle but I'm actually shocked it got cancelled. I thought he was pretty popular.

I doubt Team 7 is going to last.
aboxofscraps 16th-Oct-2012 11:50 pm (UTC)
I really like Jaime Reyes's pre-52 series but the new one was awful.
snapiphany 16th-Oct-2012 11:47 pm (UTC)
Pre-Boot Superboy/Red Robin and their wonderfully mundane adventures in domestic bliss, please. Or, if not, Midnighter and Apollo under their own title. With swearing. And butts. And much snoggery.
juanitatequila 17th-Oct-2012 12:18 am (UTC)
tim/kon was my main DC ship.

the new 52 destroyed that </3
snapiphany 17th-Oct-2012 12:59 am (UTC)
Worst decision in the history of DC comics ever. EVER.
snapiphany 17th-Oct-2012 01:33 am (UTC)
Knowing DC, they'll probably cancel that next and we won't see them for a long, long time, if ever again.
booster_blue 17th-Oct-2012 05:55 am (UTC)
I'm still bitter about Wildstorm getting absorbed into the main continuity. Authority deserves better than this.
daisyazul 16th-Oct-2012 11:52 pm (UTC)
If only this entire new universe gets cancelled
mofo_pig 16th-Oct-2012 11:59 pm (UTC)
I knew Legion Lost would get cancelled sooner or later. They have to get back to the 30th century at some point! Not too upset about Blue Beetle or Grifter, though I've really enjoyed Frankenstein.
juanitatequila 17th-Oct-2012 12:17 am (UTC)
ok time to cancel the entire new 52 and go back to the ~pre 52~ universe.

Edited at 2012-10-17 12:17 am (UTC)
fwee_prower 17th-Oct-2012 12:25 am (UTC)
ugh why DC you are failing pretty hard rn
leperheart 17th-Oct-2012 01:58 am (UTC)
I'm one of the 5 people that actually like Legion Lost, but if it gets the entire LSH proper back together (or at least Timber Wolf) I can deal.

Liefield made Grifter total shit, though, so that one isn't surprising.
prophecypro 17th-Oct-2012 08:20 am (UTC)
I havent even been able to catch up with the entire 52 relaunch. I've just been downloading the weekly batches since last summer. Only ones I've read are Detective Comics and Catwoman and those havent totally bad but they definetly have this forced feel in terms of the gritteness they're tyring to do. I dont mind the fresh start but I wish they had not obliterated some of the characters out of cannon like Wally and Cassandra Cain.
mjspice 17th-Oct-2012 10:14 am (UTC)
