Emma Watson Talks Dating: American Guys Are Nicer Than Brits

Photobucket

It's hard to picture anyone being mean to Emma Watson, especially a boy, but...apparently it's happened.

"English guys are very well put together," the Harry Potter wizard turned Perks of Being a Wallflower standout, her pixie cut grown into a shaggy bob, told Ellen DeGeneres in an interview airing tomorrow on Ellen.

"They dress really well and they are very well mannered. But they are also very restrained. Usually in the whole courting situation, I‘m used to being first of all, ignored for the first two months of the ritual. And then maybe they'll acknowledge my presence. Then, they'll probably be a little mean to me. And then, maybe we'll, you know...whatever."

The whatever must be quite the payoff, considering Watson has been dating fellow Brit Will Adamowicz, whom she met while they were both studying at Oxford, for the better part of this year.

And what does the 22-year-old actress think about American blokes?

"Then I arrive in America," she recalled, "and I remember a few nights into Brown [University], this guy just being like, 'I like you. You're great. Let's go on a date. Let's do it.' I'm like, 'I'm sorry, what just happened?' This is like a huge culture shock for me. They're very like open and very straight-forward—but they wear flip-flops and I don't know if I like that."

Those Yanks never stood a chance, did they?

I understand, Emma. I hate flip-flops on men, too.
smokesinatra 16th-Oct-2012 02:27 pm (UTC)
me tooooo oh my god I hate it
fairchilds 16th-Oct-2012 02:34 pm (UTC)
i don't even own flip flops unless someone tells me i have to go to the beach/camp thing for school.
bellwetherr 16th-Oct-2012 02:58 pm (UTC)
Sometimes it's the lesser of two evils. I had an ex who liked tevas. I put an end to that, quick.
ponpiri 16th-Oct-2012 03:10 pm (UTC)
Eh if they have nice feet I'll give them a pass
x_brittacular 16th-Oct-2012 03:21 pm (UTC)
I refuse to date or talk to a guy who wears them. It just disgusts me. I can't explain.
fishoftime 16th-Oct-2012 03:30 pm (UTC)
my boyfriend wore flip-flops for like the first half of summer and i almost died, because i'm shallow like that. then they broke, hallelujah!
zigzagzap 16th-Oct-2012 05:19 pm (UTC)
lol the exact same thing happened with my bf.
coulson 16th-Oct-2012 05:41 pm (UTC)
i'm pretty sure i saw a story on here about someone who broke their boyfriend's flip flops on purpose (not sure if it was flip flops actually)
marielaurie 16th-Oct-2012 05:47 pm (UTC)
lmao i'm waiting for my bf's flip flops to break too, i haaaate them but honestly who am i to tell him what to wear?
at least winter is coming...
fuckmyass 16th-Oct-2012 03:55 pm (UTC)
I live in San Diego, so there's no way guys cannot wear them.
lexiesloan 16th-Oct-2012 04:48 pm (UTC)
I just really hate feet on anyone and hate looking at them lol
dumbledummy 16th-Oct-2012 06:40 pm (UTC)
I live in Florida. Everyone here lives in flip-flops.
fakevoices 16th-Oct-2012 01:28 pm (UTC)
doesn't it depend on the person though
empirebird 16th-Oct-2012 01:38 pm (UTC)
Doesn't it always? But cultures do have certain character traits to them in the general sense, which is what I think she's getting at.
ectypes 16th-Oct-2012 02:24 pm (UTC)
i doubt she's trying to be offensive by generalizing here... it's all for a soundbite
cricketgrl 16th-Oct-2012 02:29 pm (UTC)
Brit boyfriends are the worst. Dating a redneck from the south would be less offensive.
mixedukjew 16th-Oct-2012 05:15 pm (UTC)
Not that you're xenophobic/racist and making sweeping generalisations or anything...
jenslore 16th-Oct-2012 06:23 pm (UTC)
As someone who is surrounded by rednecks, something worse than that is a terrifying prospect.
dubiously 16th-Oct-2012 04:40 pm (UTC)
Yes and this sounds more like something attributable to age/maturity level than culture.
ellaellaeheheh 16th-Oct-2012 01:29 pm (UTC)
I don't mind flip-flops. probably because it's all I ever wear with the weather here.
eldvno 16th-Oct-2012 05:57 pm (UTC)
Right? Pressed bitches are angry their climate doesn't allow for sandals year-around.

I found american people far more outgoing and laid-back than people in my country. I was surprised as well.

I hate flip-flops. I hate most open-toed shoes.

I love her :)

She should come to Canada. Men here are very well-mannered and wonderful, lol.
menorahmajora 16th-Oct-2012 02:14 pm (UTC)
No one gets my hatred for open shoes. Most people have hideous feet and no business wearing open shoes.
anterrabre 16th-Oct-2012 02:56 pm (UTC)
I agree. It seems like the more busted the feet, the more likely that person will be wearing open toed shoes or flip-flops and I don't get it. I mean, do they NOT know their feet are jacked?
bad_situation 16th-Oct-2012 01:31 pm (UTC)
I don't understand the hate for guys in flip flops. I guess it's never really bothered me because guys do that all the time where I live.
cuzgarysaysso 16th-Oct-2012 02:07 pm (UTC)
I know right? I live in California and my guy best friend lives in Arizona. It's fucking hot and sunny where we live. Emma knows shit because the weather in England is always cold and gloomy.

menorahmajora 16th-Oct-2012 02:18 pm (UTC)
I live in Las Vegas and I never wear sandals, I think most people have absolutely no business in any sort of open shoe, and I'm dating a guy who pretty much exclusively wears doc martens.
ladybozi 16th-Oct-2012 03:27 pm (UTC)
I basically grew up in Cali and now I'm in Vegas. I'm so used to flip flops *don't particularly like the way men dress in Vegas or Cali*

But it's such a norm I stopped paying attention.
mixedukjew England DOES have seasons16th-Oct-2012 05:20 pm (UTC)
Contrary to popular myth. The girl just doesn't like flip flops. Has sod all to do with climate because many blokes here where flip flops in the summer too. And yes, we DO have summer in the UK.
steph313 16th-Oct-2012 02:27 pm (UTC)
This. I honestly find a people odd of they DON'T wear flip flops on the regular, if only because...it's fucking hot and disgustingly humid out (here in Florida) and you're in shoes AND socks? What the hell is wrong with you? It's be like watching someone in a hoodie.

I mean, there's always exceptions where shoes are the only acceptable way, but casually...no.
expromqueen 16th-Oct-2012 04:26 pm (UTC)
i live in texas so there's plenty of flipping and flopping here haha i used to hate flip flops on guys when i was in h.s. and lived in a diff state, but now it doesn't bother me. heck, if society decided we should abandon all shoes i would be down w/ that /hippie
bribery 16th-Oct-2012 07:12 pm (UTC)
i know, right? as a girl, i love wearing flip flops whenever weather permits it and i'd be really bummed out if my bf told me something like that. i spent the summer with him in nevada, and i can't imagine asking him to wear closed-shoes in that kind of heat.

sure, it's not the most ~fashion forward~ choice, but i wear 'em all the time and therefore don't care if he wears them as long as he's comfy!
evawhimsy 17th-Oct-2012 08:49 pm (UTC)
ahahahah flip flop wank. never change, ontd.
anchors_oceans 16th-Oct-2012 01:31 pm (UTC)
perfectly describes the english guys i've met but obviously can't speak for everyone. my boyfriend is british (just passed the one year mark, knock on wood!) and he is extremely restrained and well mannered. i'm much more straight forward than him, which made me feel really awkward at first. i didn't expect england to be a huge culture shock but it was. i've kind of had to censor myself more.
rainbow_fish 16th-Oct-2012 02:02 pm (UTC)
as long as they take care of their feet, i don't mind them. But sometimes you see a guy wearing flip fops who has clearly never even thought about his own feet and then it's a mess.
soramai 16th-Oct-2012 01:31 pm (UTC)
generalization tbh.
Not all the english guys are the same.
violetsapphire 16th-Oct-2012 01:33 pm (UTC)
I totally agree about the flip-flops thing.

But the OP is wrong. Will is actually American.
robinsparkle Re: but sis19th-Oct-2012 05:05 am (UTC)
my bf never listens to me either :( He DOES, however know not to wear those god forsaken flip flops with pants, though.
empirebird 16th-Oct-2012 01:36 pm (UTC)
Ew Flip-flops on men, I agree, sis.
silvers 16th-Oct-2012 01:36 pm (UTC)
i've been with (and marrying next month!) a british guy, and he's not that restrained. i think it's a bit of a generalization. e.g. all americans are loud
anchors_oceans 16th-Oct-2012 01:42 pm (UTC)
congratulations on your future wedding! i hope my brit and i will be as lucky. <3
silvers 16th-Oct-2012 02:31 pm (UTC)
aw thank you bb! i hope so as well <3
fuckmyass 16th-Oct-2012 03:58 pm (UTC)
Americans are fucking loud! Me and two friends just went to Europe for a month and we kept commenting on how we think we were the loudest people there. Noone laughed super loud but us. I dunno, it was weird.
fabouluz 16th-Oct-2012 01:40 pm (UTC)
