Dizzee Rascal 'asked to voice Coco Pops monkey'

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Dizzee Rascal has claimed that he has been asked to voice the Coco Pops monkey.

The rapper made the announcement on Twitter and posted a picture of himself mimicking the popular character Coco drinking the cereal.

"REAL TALK! I've just been asked to do the voice over for the coco pops monkey! I always wanted to be the Milky Bar Kid... Oh well!" Dizzee tweeted.

However, the star hinted that he took offence to the offer and added the hashtag "#Thisracismiskillingmeinside".

Dizzee Rascal is currently working on the follow-up to his 2009 record Tongue n' Cheek, which reached number three on the UK chart.

So jizzed for all the comments not understanding why it's offensive to ask a black man to voice a monkey character, because ~we should all be equal etc~

added a subject line to this so I know what to skim in my inbox oh lord

Coco Pops exist in the US?
snuffyqui45 11th-Oct-2012 09:17 pm (UTC)
they're Cocoa Krispies
mrcelebrity 11th-Oct-2012 09:27 pm (UTC)
No, they're
snuffyqui45 11th-Oct-2012 09:29 pm (UTC)
No though.
marshiebaby 11th-Oct-2012 09:52 pm (UTC)
This is a General Mills cereal bb. I think the equivalent would be Kellogg's Cocoa Krispies. But IDK.
toshi_hakari 12th-Oct-2012 07:06 am (UTC)
That's not the same thing, though. Coco Pops aren't that round and puffy. They look more like chocolate rice.
grande_latte 11th-Oct-2012 09:35 pm (UTC)
Coco puffs exist and they're delicious
roguewave3 11th-Oct-2012 09:17 pm (UTC)
Ew gross

I never followed him closely but I love a few of his songs.
m_h_p 11th-Oct-2012 09:18 pm (UTC)
I can't believe that nobody from Kellogg's had the inkling that there might be something a bit off about asking a black man to voice a monkey.

Still my favourite childhood cereal though. Especially when the milk went chocolatey.
hocus_pocus 11th-Oct-2012 09:19 pm (UTC)
ew

i love dizzee though
smilofax 11th-Oct-2012 09:24 pm (UTC)
LOL I wonder who actually thought this would be a good idea.
I'm glad he turned them now becuase based on the title alone and knowing what he's like I thought he'd said yes.

Kinda OT
but I only just found out he's Ghanian, didn't expect that at all.

I hope that he's done nothing ~controversial because I really like him. Is he a nice boy?
sleepdirty 11th-Oct-2012 10:42 pm (UTC)
I don't care. I will always love him for calling Kate Moss out at the GQ awards. Causing drama and interrupting people's interviews because she lost her lipstick

this is so fucking hilarious.
'kate moss has lost her lipstick son! it's a disaster!'

Because there is a whole racist idea that black people are linked with monkeys and chimps. This was actually backed by scientists back in the day. If you type "Michelle Obama" into google images one of the suggestions is "Michelle Obama Gorilla", and the fact that someone shopped her face onto an animal in that group kinda proves it is something people haven't totally moved away from.

While this might seem like a small thing, it still plays into racist ideology.

but it's a voice over, so unless you know he's black you would never know by just listening to it.

Have you heard Dizzie Rascal speak?

It is not like they are hiring some random voice over artist. there is going to be a lot of press around it if they went ahead with it so, it is not a situation where they can hide the race of the person. Even so, it is bound to come out. It might not be racially motivated, but it is racially ignorant.

treebraids 12th-Oct-2012 09:26 am (UTC)
Yes, it is. You don't exactly hear that and think middle class white guy.

How can racial ignorance be "no big deal"?
Monkeys were part of minstrel acts back in the day. It is a step away from shucking and jiving.
treebraids 12th-Oct-2012 09:39 am (UTC)
LOL @ you splitting hairs. Racial ignorance is a big deal. full stop. end of story.
treebraids 12th-Oct-2012 09:43 am (UTC)
Ah well, I tried my best.
black_swan87 11th-Oct-2012 09:33 pm (UTC)

I'm too old to be a fan, but I'm so ridiculously maternally proud of Dizzee. I remember when Boy in the Corner was released and it kicked so many heads in, and his teacher got a lot of praise for just spotting his talent (I read about them in that odd-couple section of the Guardian!)

Then he fell off the general public radar for a while and then I read an article about how he had all this success and some of his local "friends" tried to bring him down, and basically said he was not being faithful to his roots and they just tried to blag his money and keep him at their level. That's a real UK working class thing, if you go 'up' you ain't one of them anymore and you're a snob and stuff (what I got called by my family for going to university lol).

Anyway, at some point the kid said 'Fuck that and Fuck you' and next thing I know, he's on TV wearing a gold suit singing 'Bonkers', like a 100% turn from who he was when he first got famous.

I actually credit Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer for some of his change in attitude - he was on Shooting Stars and he's a) confused, and a little bit defensive b) moody and a little bit defensice then, c) laughing his arse off at the WTF

Edit: what the fuck at the coco pops thing, YES THAT'S RACIST OMG.

prophecypro 12th-Oct-2012 01:25 am (UTC)
No one at the marketing department stopped them to think, hey maybe its not a good idea to ask a black dude from East London to voice a Monkey?

Then again they always did try to make Coca sound like he was black...smh
kc_23 12th-Oct-2012 03:12 am (UTC)
err... what the hell is this?
calichaos 12th-Oct-2012 03:20 am (UTC)
i dont understand how this is racist at all watever im over it attacking superman for not having a black one would be something id be all up for tho
ppeak 12th-Oct-2012 07:05 am (UTC)
I came in here, and I'm confused.

It doesn't help that the dude seems over the moon about it.

What's exactly the problem here?

I would love to hear what he sounds like, because that might be a clue as to why he was asked to be the voice.
