NBC to Air Munsters Reboot as Halloween Special

America is going to get a chance to see NBC's rebooted Munsters pilot Mockingbird Lane after all.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the network has decided to air the pricey $10 million pilot, which has been in development for two years, as a Halloween special. Mockingbird Lane will air Friday, Oct. 26 at 8 p.m. before Grimm (Oct. 31 is a Wednesday).

NBC declined to comment.

Based on the goofy 1964-66 CBS comedy series about a Frankenstein-ish dad and his monstrous relatives, NBC's new version is from writer-producer Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies) and director Bryan Singer (the X-Men movies, House) with a cast including Jerry O'Connell as Herman Munster, Portia de Rossi as Lily Munster and Eddie Izzard as the Dracula-esque Grandpa.

As THR has detailed, Mockingbird Lane has endured a long, tortured history at NBC, and the network was considering whether to scrap the project altogether. The reboot was originally launched before current chariman Bob Greenblatt came on board in early 2011, but Greenblatt redeveloped it extensively.

Yet Fuller and Singer are said to have had differing opinions about the style of the pilot, and the final version is said to have come in below the network's expectations. With Fuller now busy shooting NBC's 13-episode Hannibal series, he's not able to work on Mockingbird. So NBC has been considering all options to salvage the property.

Without Fuller, scrap it. Even with Fuller, it sounds like a bad idea.
theratwhispers 11th-Oct-2012 05:15 pm (UTC)
No.

Scrap it.

I agree but as a Halloween Special is better than them ruining the franchise further by trying to a TV series.
theratwhispers 11th-Oct-2012 05:22 pm (UTC)
Yah, it will probably bomb anyways. They already tried to remake it once before, and that failed too.
stebo 11th-Oct-2012 05:23 pm (UTC)
I'm still curious to see it.
muffledlaugh 11th-Oct-2012 05:16 pm (UTC)
Lol showing this on the Friday night before Halloween. No one will be watching this tbh, they should have saved their 10mil for something else.
mila_s_garden 11th-Oct-2012 05:16 pm (UTC)
Never watched the original, but I'm more interested in this now that I know Portia de Rossi is involved in it.
lol, in listal it's tagged with "Didn't The Last Remake Fail?"

Well, might as well after paying $10 million. Then send it to the land of forgotten pilots like FOX's Witches of Eastwick reimagining.

This is a great idea. They should air failed pilots as one of specials more often. Case in point: As horrible as the Wonder Woman reboot looked, I would have still watched the one off pilot.
lawzl 11th-Oct-2012 05:29 pm (UTC)
i agree with ur whole comment. they never know how the public may react...
truelasher 11th-Oct-2012 05:36 pm (UTC)
Especially as often as some of these networks play repeats of shows just to extend a season. Might as well air a pilot while another show is on break and give us something new, which is already paid for.
evett 11th-Oct-2012 05:51 pm (UTC)
ia. Like Being Human was just a failed pilot until it was broadcasted and grew a following online. They'll never know if a show really sucks if they don't let the public see it.
mysticmaestoso 11th-Oct-2012 06:05 pm (UTC)
IKR, they should. Actually even better, they should go the British route and just make mini-series instead of always trying to make a seasonal show. At least they get their money's worth in investment.

i watched it and it was pretty bad, lol.

Jerry O'Connell is like a show ruiner

run if Jerry is cast in something b/c it's about to be canceled
sugary_placenta 11th-Oct-2012 05:31 pm (UTC)
he and summer glau should never be hired on tv shows if the creators want it to be successful.

She was on Alphas and it ~survived another season and may get renewed again, so who knows.
lafave 11th-Oct-2012 05:36 pm (UTC)
Jerry O'Connell is the new Ted McGinley
dandyxwarhol 11th-Oct-2012 05:28 pm (UTC)
I will watch it, I like this cast.
dreamofcoffee 11th-Oct-2012 05:30 pm (UTC)
I've been against this project since its inception, but I would probably watch the pilot out of sheer curiosity, ngl.
prophecypro 11th-Oct-2012 05:31 pm (UTC)
I kinda want this show to do well if it got picked up.
Izzard, Fuller is a plus and O'Connell deserves a break after like 25 years
deltabean 11th-Oct-2012 05:31 pm (UTC)
I'd watch for Portia
rories 11th-Oct-2012 05:33 pm (UTC)
I want to watch it because of Charity Wakefield's face.

$10 million for a fucking pilot and deciding to axe a series altogether? The Olympics fail of broadcasting and their recent scheduling bullshit? NBC has gone down the shitter so badly, even worse than we use to joke about before tbh. I have a feeling it'll cancel Parks & Rec and Community this year, and that along with 30 Rock will leave it with no quality shows at all. It'll just be five hours of the Voice every week and L&O:SVU from now on.
redaodai 11th-Oct-2012 05:35 pm (UTC)
I like to believe that all of Jack's bad NBC shows from last week's 30 Rock will become real in NBC's future schedule.
beaddddddsss 11th-Oct-2012 05:36 pm (UTC)
Praying for this, sis. Or we can do a throwback and make MILF Island or Seinfeld Vision a reality.
rabbitncavylove 12th-Oct-2012 02:11 am (UTC)
seriously

why was it so much?
saintclaire87 11th-Oct-2012 05:37 pm (UTC)
I think it is a good idea. I think I will check it out. Will Grimm be a repeat?

Maybe if it does well and it is a good show, NBC might give it a second chance. I like Brian Fuller.
elksa 11th-Oct-2012 05:37 pm (UTC)
I'm glad about this, because even though I think it was a terrible idea to commission the show, I still want to see the final product
