Taraji P. Henson Finally Makes TV GUIDE Cover After 2011 Snub

TV Guide Cover Stars

Person of Interest stars Taraji P. Henson, Jim Caviezel, and Michael Emerson make a splash on the October 15 - 21 TV Guide cover.

TV GUIDE *cancelled* the September 2011 "PERSON OF INTEREST" cover after Taraji P. Henson - an Academy Award and Emmy Award nominee -  spoke out about being snubbed. In response, TV GUIDE gave the three stars of another action show, "CHARLIE'S ANGELS", the cover. That show was cancelled after several episodes, and "PERSON OF INTEREST" became the #1 New Drama Series of the 2011-2012 television season.

Sept. 21, 2011 - TooFab spoke with Debra Birnbaum, the Editor-in-Chief of TV Guide Magazine and TVGuideMagazine.com, to see what was behind the decision to feature only the male stars.

"I made an editorial decision to do a story about the relationship between the two male characters on 'Person of Interest' and that's who I was going to put on the cover," Birnbaum tells TooFab exclusively. "That has been my decision all along, ever since I saw the pilot. We're certainly fans of Taraji Henson and her storyline on the show was never intended to be the focus of our cover story. I don't know where there was a misunderstanding about this, but it's been clear to everyone from the start. I don't make decisions on who is put and not put on the cover based on race or gender." "This week's cover September 26 issue features the three stars of 'Charlie's Angels' -- Minka Kelly,  Annie Illonzeh and Rachael Taylor. We are not pursuing a cover of 'Person of Interest' at this time."

so she's a main character but wasn't featured with the other lead characters?
loonyluna26 10th-Oct-2012 01:35 am (UTC)
Kevin is also a main character and he's not on this year's cover.
suborbital 10th-Oct-2012 03:09 am (UTC)
Love him. Maybe he's not photogenic enough for TV Guide. Stupid magazine.
lori22 10th-Oct-2012 01:41 am (UTC)
Correct. The cover never made it to print after Taraji P. Henson spoke out about it.
suborbital 10th-Oct-2012 02:56 am (UTC)
I didn't think she was much of a main until the second half of the season. But she definitely is now. It's a great show.

This program has so much potential but I forgot to watch it after the 3rd episode so I figured it couldnt have been that good
lori22 10th-Oct-2012 01:41 am (UTC)
It's an awesome show. It got so much better around episode 9.
deadtree 10th-Oct-2012 03:02 am (UTC)
it gets better and better actually
wits 10th-Oct-2012 01:34 am (UTC)
yes because what society is certainly lacking is discussion about the relationship between two white male lead characters!
bostongirl2003 10th-Oct-2012 03:08 am (UTC)
right? when will we finally have an in-depth exploration of the camaraderie between middle aged white men?

That mess, lawd.

I like this show a lot. She's great in it.

The Editor in Chief sounds like a dick. Umm, she has a huge central role in the show. Its not a show about a white male bromance.
deadtree 10th-Oct-2012 03:03 am (UTC)
well it kind of IS a show about a white male bromance, but Taraji's character is massively important.
ljubavirakija 10th-Oct-2012 01:38 am (UTC)
I really need to marathon this show. I think I stopped watching around episode 5-6
lori22 10th-Oct-2012 01:42 am (UTC)
Yeah, I stopped watching after the third episode but started watching it again around Episode 9. It became so much better.

I always remember her name as Tajari.

She's talented, beautiful, and has a radiant personality. I'm glad she's finding success, but she still isn't given enough credit.
hrhobo 10th-Oct-2012 01:51 am (UTC)
me too.

kind of like kardashian. i never watched the show and avoided most of the ontd KKK posts pre-2011, so i automatically thought it was kashardian.
itsafunny_thing 10th-Oct-2012 09:28 am (UTC)
I did too!
false_hate 10th-Oct-2012 01:40 am (UTC)
I only know about this show from the ONTD posts proclaiming Jim as Batman Jesus.
hot143chocolate 10th-Oct-2012 01:40 am (UTC)
She is looks all kinds of good.

Werq!

I'm a big fan of hers. So big, in fact, that I used to quote her sex scene in Baby Boy on my walks to and from school.
musicnextdoor 10th-Oct-2012 01:41 am (UTC)
Her dress is certainly appropriate for a police detective. Can do a lot of running around in that.

Her character is less irritating and goofy this season sort of damning with faint praise... but the character also works better now that she's not as uninformed and is more integrated w/the shenanigans.
deadtree 10th-Oct-2012 03:05 am (UTC)
lol I love this show and her character but the first thing I noticed was "why are Ben and Jesus more or less in costume and she's all red carpet?"
musicnextdoor 10th-Oct-2012 05:23 am (UTC)
lol, yeah, exactly. They should have all been in-character or all out-of-character.

Maybe half or 2/3 of last season her character bugged me but I loved the ep with her son and liked her more once she stopped being an adversary. I like her on the guys' side. That was a very good decision IMO. She should be on the team, especially if they're going to have big baddies as well as a stream of weekly lesser bad guys to deal with -- they could use all the help they can get.
saltireflower 10th-Oct-2012 01:48 am (UTC)
She looks hot. Never seen this show though.
emesieremonde 10th-Oct-2012 01:49 am (UTC)
this show is AMAZING. everyone should watch it.
pantspolice 10th-Oct-2012 01:50 am (UTC)
agreed
thelovehater 10th-Oct-2012 01:53 am (UTC)
Really? I'm tempted to give it a try - what is good about it?
emesieremonde 10th-Oct-2012 02:07 am (UTC)
everything!! lol
idk i love the suspense, there's decent character development considering how new the show is, the actors are brilliant, you get questions answered during each episode but have more by the end, etc.

if you like shows like Revenge and Justified, i think you'll like POI.
hannahstarr 10th-Oct-2012 02:32 am (UTC)
I want to watch it but it's not streaming on netflix last time I checked :(
memorian 10th-Oct-2012 01:53 am (UTC)
I wish there was more POI post on ONTD. (or maybe there is but I never noticed, since i just marathoned the entire show last weekend)
lori22 10th-Oct-2012 02:13 am (UTC)
Oh, what caused you to marathon the show? Do you like it? Favorite episodes?
memorian 10th-Oct-2012 02:35 am (UTC)
My friend is really into it and I ran outta shows to watch, so I decided to watch it. hmm favorite ep....gosh it's so hard. Lol I can almost say i love all the eps. since i watched them one right after the other it all meshed together. The one that impacted me alot though was ""Many Happy Returns", When you find out Reese's ex was killed by her abusive husband. my god. I love all the parts when people are like "this tall guy in a suit, just busted in shooting everyone in the knee caps" that has me cracking up. But I do love it. I feel like i can rewatch it, or that season 2 was already over so I can marathon it. I hate the chick that kidnapped Finch thou. I HATE HER AND HER SMILING FACE. I just need more people to blab too........
