Green Day’s Mike Dirnt: ‘We had to put the life of our friend in front of everything’

Green Day bass player Mike Dirnt has spoken out in the wake of frontman Billie Joe Armstrong‘s public meltdown and subsequent visit to rehab.

Speaking earlier this evening to Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1, Dirnt said that the punk pop trio had cancelled ‘everything’ over the coming few weeks as “we had to put the life of our friend in front of everything.”

Armstrong checked himself into a clinic for substance abuse treatment last month after an onstage meltdown during the band’s performance at iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas.

Speaking about the pressure that the band were under during the build-up to the release of their new album, ‘iUno!’, Dirnt said: “Hindsight is 20/20… it was a tremendous undertaking… It catches up with you a little bit. We definitely jumped off a moving train.”

Of the Las Vegas incident, he added: “All that inertia. There were signs of things hitting the fan, we hadn’t slept in forever.”

Dirnt went on to add that he now hasn’t seen Armstrong “in weeks”, as his bandmate spends time in rehab and with his family, adding that this is the longest time in the past 20 years that they have not hung out.

Despite Armstrong’s current issues, Dirnt says he is adamant he will pull through, and said: “We’re still getting ready for the next phase.”

this is the longest time in the past 20 years that they have not hung out

:( They're all obviously such good friends and this shit is so depressing. I hope Billie Joe will be okay. He's not had it easy.

Also, ¡Uno! is a great album.

This. :(

I'm all with you on the first part but I was really let down by Uno. It felt too repetitive to me. :/
celtic_thistle 10th-Oct-2012 02:53 am (UTC)
Aw, it reminds me of Nimrod. Which I love. And Warning too.
yousaidlog 9th-Oct-2012 11:42 pm (UTC)
Aww @ the hanging out part : (

Their video for "Oh Love" is so ridiculous. The constant shots of the models with their mouths hanging open is unintentionally hilarious.

i'm a huge green day stan but i hate that video so much lol
sillycucumber 10th-Oct-2012 12:10 am (UTC)
It's a really bad video. I would hope GD were more self-aware than that, but I guess not...
jeveuxsavoir 10th-Oct-2012 12:49 am (UTC)
Ditto
tellmeimawreck 10th-Oct-2012 12:24 am (UTC)
The video was horrendous and did nothing for the song for me.

Kill the DJ's video wasn't much better.
treradical 9th-Oct-2012 11:49 pm (UTC)
:( hope billie gets better
rebeljean 10th-Oct-2012 12:18 am (UTC)
As long as Billie's doing better. That's all that matters.
beatupcar 10th-Oct-2012 12:24 am (UTC)
N'awwww. He's out now and looking to be on the mend!

¡Uno! is such a brilliant album and I'm looming forward to ¡Dos! So much more after hearing Stray Heart.

Oh and I agree with the comments above about the 'Oh Love' video. Such a mess. Sam The Bear was way off with that one.
tellmeimawreck 10th-Oct-2012 12:25 am (UTC)
I really hope that he gets back on the wagon and makes a full recovery because I love him to death.

That being said, I was super underwhelmed with Uno!. Idk, it was really repetitive to me. I'm hoping that Dos! will be better.
josh_the_k 10th-Oct-2012 12:46 am (UTC)
Get better soon, Billie. I'm really hoping you don't cancel the winter tour.

I really like "¡Uno!" Some of it sounds like "nimrod," and some sounds like "Dookie."

And, yes, the "Oh Love" video sucks. But all the videos released so far have sucked. All of them seem like afterthoughts.
marmar627 10th-Oct-2012 09:29 am (UTC)
I feel like such a selfish bitch, but I'm really concerned about the tour, just because my friends and are are so fucking excited about it. Of course I want him to get better, just like you said, but I won't even pretend that I don't care about the tour, because I do.

And ia about the videos.
toaerythinness 10th-Oct-2012 12:47 am (UTC)
I wanted more out of that breakdown on stage
jeveuxsavoir 10th-Oct-2012 12:49 am (UTC)
I find him so strangely attractive and I can't figure out why.

Except with that hair. That's just...no.
tobiveil12 10th-Oct-2012 01:26 am (UTC)
mike dirnt is attractive.
in the way that i could see he was hot when he was younger.
mysticmaestoso 10th-Oct-2012 01:31 am (UTC)
They should thank their lucky stars that they weren't famous during the '70s when the chance of losing a bandmate was very high and the shelf life of a rock band was low.
everythngintime 10th-Oct-2012 01:34 am (UTC)
Dookie was the first CD I ever bought - I hope Billie Joe gets better really soon.
ludmi_83 10th-Oct-2012 02:03 am (UTC)
Awwwww but really his public meltdown was cos he was right when he was mad at the 1 minute thing, tbh he should have keep singing, and is not like he did a DUI or w/e.

But good for him if he wants rehab but js what happen to rock?
celtic_thistle 10th-Oct-2012 02:54 am (UTC)
He's had addiction issues for years :( this might have been the final straw.
highflyer8 10th-Oct-2012 02:21 am (UTC)
I totally missed the news of this meltdown.
my_own_beat_now 10th-Oct-2012 03:06 am (UTC)
Listening to the full interview Mike gave made me a little worried, NGL.... I think things for Billie were/are far more serious than anyone knows. I love him to death and will stan him forever and I just want him to get better and get his shit pulled together - however long that takes.

Also, Mike Dirnt is a good man and an awesome friend.
rolie87 10th-Oct-2012 03:14 am (UTC)
Everyone at my college has been asking me about Billie Joe since the iHeart Radio festival.
All of my friends associate me with Green Day and it was ridiculous hearing over and over again, "Hey, I hear Billie Joe had a meltdown. What happened?"

I don't know him personally, so how am I supposed to know the details of his personal life? I know Billie has dealt with addiction in the past and I can only hope that he gets his act together.
rolie87 10th-Oct-2012 03:15 am (UTC)
Also, I totally forgot my default icon was pseudo-better, but not quite since it's the Reverend Strychnine Twitch drinking a Corona.. But I love the Tubbies. <3
marmar627 10th-Oct-2012 09:31 am (UTC)
Oh yeah, my friends and I are experiencing the same thing. It's obviously appropriate to go up to us, laughingly, and ask "Gee, how fucked up is Billie?" :/
starswept 10th-Oct-2012 03:43 am (UTC)
I hadn't heard about this. It's weird because tonight and last night Billie Joe Armstrong was on The Voice as a mentor and you would never know anything was wrong, even though it must have been filmed close to when this occurred.
prophecypro 10th-Oct-2012 05:07 am (UTC)
Sad that the dude is going through it now this late in the career
